No, the end of story is record sales.Of which there are none.
(Offhand I don't recall ever buying music for the great bass playing.)
I lay the lack of group success post Cetera at the feet of the original 4, They went for the quick fix when he left and should have stuck to their high standards for quality they had always been know for. There are hundreds of musicians in LA who can out-sing Scheff. (Heck, watch American Idol.} Lucky for Jason he was in the right place at the right time.
Jason Scheff is a great singer, And so is Cetera. Although I find Jason Scheffs bass playing is far superior. Now maybe Scheff doesn't sound like Cetera, but he's doing a damn good job. End of story.

@casparus52 It's sometimes difficult, but you always have to differentiate between quality of the performance and quality of the recording. I give this recording an F. I give the performance a B+. (I saw them four times in the 70's. Tulsa, Des Moines, Minneapolis and St. Paul. EVERY one was amazing. Sadly, now with Scheff, I wouldn't go to one of their concerts if it was free and walking distance from my house. Fortunately Champlin's gone - certainly a step in the right direction.)
A magnificent song from superb Chicago XVI and a terrific performance. Great job, juantoletemex, once again. Muy buen trabajo de investigación y felicidades!

Ella dijo “Esto está hoy solitario…” Siempre está triste cuando está sola. Ella dijo “Te necesito aquí esta noche” No podía esperar a que yo llegase a casa. Ella me ama. Peter Cetera is great and he brought a more romantic slow jam kinda tone to Chicago.

@djchas1 You are correct, Cetera hasn't had a hit since the 90's. But neither has Chicago. Cetera does exactly the number of concerts he wants to, when he wants to, and where he wants to. @MrLen1955 although you're comment is articulate and well thought out- how could they have ever begun to replace pC? scheff was a good choice considering the abject failure they were facing. just my opinion of course.
I totally agree with barkbbdog2. Cetera was the backbone and life of this once upon a time supergroup. We also can not forget Terry Kath and Robert Lamm. Now they have become a tribute band to Cetera, which he does deserve after placing the group so many times on the charts.
Rubbish. More than Terry Kath or Robert Lamm??? What about the horns?? You DO know that Chicago started in the late 60's right? Not the early 80's. Don't get me wrong, Peter Cetera is great but let's not get carried away here. That being said, this IS a great tune.
@leftfootlouie what r u talking about? I grew up listeng to Cetera as the frontman for Chicago, he is a big part of the band until he left in 1985. What don't I know? Relax.
@leftfootlouie im not 13, far from it. I am aware Chicago started in the 60's, but Cetera mader them bigger than ever. He was the lead singer for most of Chicago's existance. Scheff was descent, but Cetera is the man.
@pattiannbabe Peter Cetera will never reunit with Chicago, even if it guaranteed a cure for aids and cancer and any uncurable diseases. He is an agotistical scum of the earth.
@psychodelicrock12 oh you know him personally huh Asshole???...you've been with the group day in and day out for 20 years so you know what went on???? shut your Punk ass mouth Know-it-All
@HeRacesTheSun I see what you mean but honestly what is the first thing you think of when someone says, Do you like the band Chicago? I am sure most people think of Cetera. The other lead vocalists were okay, but come on... Peter Cetera is a gem!
@jaysirrock Ok, I agree with you. Terry Kath IS CHICAGO and Peter Cetera is the voice of Chicago. Even though there have been a few lead singers, when I think of Chicago, all I think of is Cetera. OMG talent!!!
@JohnathanPozzi I am so sorry to disagree, but no one has before or ever held a candle to Terry Kath. In the vast population of guitarists, there are many talents in one respect or another - speed, chording, etc. Terry Kath was a musical genious that was the heart of Chicago's sound. They were never the same after he was gone. The thing that Kath had that separates him from many great guitarists is soul, style and feeling. In my book, he is one of the best that has ever been.
@jaysirrock YES!! (TERRY WAS IT!)TO SOME OF YOU CLUELESS FUCKTARDS OUT HERE ON YOU TUBE,TERRY KATH WAS THE FOUNDING MEMBER OF CHICAGO!! TERRY WAS A VERY EDGEY PLAYER TOO,,GO LISTEN TO THE CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY MATERIAL!! YOU'LL QUICKLY LEARN,,TERRY KATH IS THE #1 MAN BEHIND THIS GROUP. PETER CETERA WAS JUST THE BEST CHOSEN(BY KATH AS WELL)VOCALIST/BASSIST FOR THE GROUP,,THINK I'M JOKING,,GO ASK ROBERT LAMM,,JAMES PANKOW,DANNY SERAPHINE,LEE LOUGHAINE!! I KNOW THIS BAND WERY WELL!!
@EXTIQUE I dont think anyone cares that you know (or knew) the band well or not...Bottom line is...You re right, original band was the best..But if you compare the 1st three albums to the last 3 (with Kath), I think you'd admit that the first 3 were significantly better....But, that said, to be able to lose Kath, then Cetera and be able to maintain their position again at the top of the charts (1988-89) would'nt have happened without Bill Champlain (on vocals & keys)..
@EXTIQUE (2nd comment): If Lamm was such a great original (and he 'was', why didn't they give him songs to sing post 70's??)...Was it because, perhaps Champlain & Scheff were a better fit as time went on? Answer: YES...BTW, Chicago was getting pretty syrupy at the end of the Kath era anyway, so a change was due to happen anyway, just a shame that his life ended the way it did...Well, time to put on 'Hot Streets"...I loved that one too....Dacus, baby.
@fayette202 clearly you've never seen them live with Scheff. He's a great musician and a very talented singer that has only gotten better as he's gotten older. Can you say the same for Cetera? He's a non-factor in music these days, Scheff however, is still rocking it old school...
FYI I've seen Chicago live with Cetera then years later with Scheff, same great songs with a slightly different take.
@fayette202 --- That comment about Scheff not being able to sing is such bulls*it. Jason does a very respectable vocal representation of songs sang by Cetera.
Just because your a fan of Cetera's doesnt give you the right to take cheap shots at Jason. Recognize Scheff's talent as well while still stating you prefer Cetera's original versions. Musically speaking, Jason is spot on.
If you only intend to state that nobody is Cetera, that's true but credible musicians can sing like him and well.
@JohnathanPozzi You may like him just fine. Great. Knock yourself out. Go buy all their post-Cetera stuff. But sadly, you're in the minority. Have you looked at their record sales since Scheff? Dismal and pathetic are adjectives that come to mind. As I said before, my beef is NOT with Scheff. It's with Lamm, Pankow, Parazaider and Lochnane for not maintaining their high standards they used to hold.
Thanks for making my point better than I did. As you say, he WAS the face of the group - 20 years+ ago. BUT NOT NOW. It quit being about Cetera exactly one second after he resigned. Then it was up to the group to find a replacement who could fill his shoes. When it became obvious that Scheff wasn't the right choice they should have tried to find a real talent-a Michael McDonald-type who could really bring it. Barring a Santana-type comeback I don't see them ever returning to their 16-17 success.
I agree, but I think this Cetera vs Scheff debate misses the point. It's not about Cetera and it hasn't been for over 20 years. (BTW, 17 went double platinum SIX times. 18 went gold once. Sales have been flat ever since.) It was apparent by 1990 that Scheff was not the future of the group. They knew back then that they needed a different vocalist to get the listening public's attention, but they chose to cast their lot with a Cetera-sound-alike and try to make their money on the road.
Of course it's about Cetera, he was the face of the group. It also didn't help that Chicago offered up an inferior soundalike as his replacement. The band might have known in the long-term that Scheff was not the ideal choice, but they got caught up in the massive sales and exposure. Can't say I blame them because they were at their highest level.
Chicago 17 went double platinum - not once - but SIX times. That's more than the next 13 Chicago releases - COMBINED. If "Jason is better than Peter" how come their record sales are only a fraction of what they used to be with Cetera?
I believe it's partly due to Cetera leaving the band and a shift in musical tastes. Of course, having a soundalike didn't help matters either, but I can't fault Scheff for doing what he was hired to do.
CHICAGO rocks it is best livivng band out there! I LOVE CHICAGO!!The 80s were awsome too they are so amazing i wish i lived through the 80s :):):):):):):):)
I believe Peter Cetera and all the original members will come together for a reunion concert. I believe Jason and Tris will step aside and respectfully watch the masters at work. I believe this will happen exactly one day after hell freezes over.
If there is ever a reunion concert with Cetera and Lamm, I will fly to anywhere in the country to see that concert. If Cetera was to come back, that would be a shot of energy into the arm of Chicago.
Reunion? In a Dallas interview a few years ago, a local interviewer asked Robert Lamm about a reunion concert with Cetera. His answer was, "Never say never." I'm not holding my breath, but seeing them together again is high on my Bucket List. Hey, how about if they did a reunion concert and the proceeds go to a charity. I bet they'd be willing to bury the hatchet for a good cause. Breast Cancer research maybe?
Some don't care for the Chicago ballad era. They stumbled onto it with "If You Leave Me Now." That was supposed to be filler and it ended up taking them to #1 - A place they'd never been before. Foster latched onto that and helped them re-invent themselves. Without a ballad era, they would have been done by 1978. As it turned out it extended their prominence another 10 years. Since 1990, basically an oldies band. Night and Day is the only thing they've done worthy of praise in the last 20 years.
You are correct, but the highest CMW ever charted was #7. IYLMN was their first #1 hit. Hot Streets and 13 had lukewarm sales and Chicago was floundering until David Foster helped re-invent them with the ballad hits on 16 and 17 which had their highest sales (by far) to date. Sadly they have essentially been relegated to the oldies band circuit since.
How can a band write everything in the key of E? Musical proficiency and vision requires knowing them all! To play in E alone with minor ability you should know at least 3 related keys in my view.
Saw Chicago several times and recently in Mississippi. Vocals really lacked but musically flawless, horn section second to none. Never had the chance to see them with Cetera who is in my top three male vocalists. He makes me melt, his voice is so pure. And ladies, did you check out his bod here? VERY NICE INDEED!
Some things in life just should not be allowed and Chicago minus Peter is one of them. They were the best with him and he was the best with them.
I felt that in recent years that the band sounded tired. It wasn't that they couldn't play anymore, but that they were just dialing it in. The vocals are one of the reasons that I only go to a few Chicago concerts a year, Scheff should go back to trying to sound like Cetera, it worked better for him.
I agree CHICAGO was the best with Peter, and Peter was awesome with them. However, Peter went solo and proved he can be great with a band and great on his own. The others members in CHICAGO can't say that.....
Peter Cetera was a key to Chicago's early success. He was the reason Inspiration, Hard Habit, Hard To Say, Love Me Tomorrow, etc etc were so successful.
I agree wholeheartedly with that statement. They tarnished the legacy of the band by going with Scheff, by the mid-90's, they were essentially reduced to an oldies band and a tired one at that. It's not Scheff's fault though, most 25 year olds would jump at the chance to lead a rock band, let alone one of the most successful bands of all-time.
Verdaderamente, una canción interesante en su poesía como en su musica tematica, como arreglos, tema que a criterio de alto nivel, y en lo internacional nacio para quedar en la posteridad, reconocida ante mexicanos, primer nivel en estandares musicales globales en America.

I can actually understand why Seraphine was fired lol. His drumming in this specific video isnt up to speed as he used to be in the seventies. He's better now than he was then, but the eighties and nineties seemed to be alot simpler than his fast latin-style in the band's early days. I know these things, I am a drummer and play Chicago all the time.
Danny was not fired because of his drumming capabilities. Bill said it was because he was stiking his nose into business that did not concern him (ie overinflated ego). As for his drumming technique in the 80s, everything was going computer and Danny fell behind. He didn't like going digital. As for the Latin-style, that's attributed more to Laudir than Danny, but percussion is percussion and they complemented each other.
I read that somehwhere. Guncontrol obviously doesnt have his facts up to date lol. But absolutley right. They complimented each other. And I can see where GC thought that his drumming was losing its feel..but like u said, computers taking over. IMO I think digital drums have faded into the past. My church uses em but i think acoustic drums are coming back.
I don't know when he quit playing bass, this guy was one of the top bass players in the world, at least up to their 16th album. Some of the runs he pulled off in the studio, (1st & 5th album in particular), sound like he made them up in the moment rather than a planned note for note approach. He has a superb ear and his sound in the studio was always astounding. I just think he gave it up or at least stop doing significant bass work late in his career.
I absolutely agree when you say P.C was one of the top bass players in the world. I love the way he uses themes and variations in his bassplaying (starts simple then adds bits here and there as the song carries) !!! And over that, while he sings! My influence in the bass by far!
No offense CeteraEra, but Cetera sort of made Chicago with the 1980's ballads. All of the ORIGNINAL members in my opinion were what made teh band. But dont get me wrong, the band is not the same without Peter's great musicianship.
Hey, It's your opinion, as you said. I don't mind. Cetera, in my heart, will always be a part of Chicago. Everyone makes the band, but Cetera was an essential part of the backbone.
David Foster is the one who took them down the ballads road and recreated the image of Chicago to make them more Top 40. Even PC has mentioned that he is more Rock-n-Roll than ballads. Both CHI and PC have come full circle in the past 23 years.
Hey, everyone has their opinions. Guess I offended someone with my 'discription', I dunno. *Sighs* I'm much too much a grownup to be bothered by the little things.
Eh dont worry. I'm 23 and already I feel the exact same way. I dont really give a shit anyway. This is Peter Cetera. I dont know man, he's just so amazing live as well as in the studio. I thank god everyday for talent like him and wish I could be as great and consistent. Ya know, I'm a true baritone when I talk but when I sing I am a power 2nd tenor and can pull off some of his 1st tenor stuff.
I can't sing, but I try and sing Peter's parts, with my voice cracking and going out on the long notes! You make me feel old. I always listen in complete awe at the sounds that man can produce with that truely unique voice of his. It's almost unbelieveble his vocal range, with someone who can speak so low, and sing so high.
I have to falsetto his higher vocal parts but there are songs I can pull off without cracking even though my natural talking voice is rather deep. 1. If You Leave Me Now 2. Along Comes A Woman 3. Hard Habit To Break" 4. Feeling Stronger Everyday 5. Stay The Night 6. Glory Of Love 7. You're The Inspiration (On a really good day) all in the original key.

@leftfootlouie what r u talking about? I grew up listeng to Cetera as the frontman for Chicago, he is a big part of the band until he left in 1985. What don't I know? Relax.
Bntnredsox 1 year ago 2
@leftfootlouie im not 13, far from it. I am aware Chicago started in the 60's, but Cetera mader them bigger than ever. He was the lead singer for most of Chicago's existance. Scheff was descent, but Cetera is the man.

@HeRacesTheSun I see what you mean but honestly what is the first thing you think of when someone says, Do you like the band Chicago? I am sure most people think of Cetera. The other lead vocalists were okay, but come on... Peter Cetera is a gem!
Bntnredsox 8 months ago
@Bntnredsox Terry Kath IS CHICAGO. Peter Cetera, who is great, is chicago. You cant forget where it stated.
jaysirrock 5 months ago
@jaysirrock Ok, I agree with you. Terry Kath IS CHICAGO and Peter Cetera is the voice of Chicago. Even though there have been a few lead singers, when I think of Chicago, all I think of is Cetera. OMG talent!!!
Bntnredsox 5 months ago
@jaysirrock With all do respect to Kath, Bill Champlin, Kath's replacement, is better or at least equal to, Terry Kath.
JohnathanPozzi 5 months ago
@JohnathanPozzi I am so sorry to disagree, but no one has before or ever held a candle to Terry Kath. In the vast population of guitarists, there are many talents in one respect or another - speed, chording, etc. Terry Kath was a musical genious that was the heart of Chicago's sound. They were never the same after he was gone. The thing that Kath had that separates him from many great guitarists is soul, style and feeling. In my book, he is one of the best that has ever been.

EXTIQUE 5 months ago
@EXTIQUE I dont think anyone cares that you know (or knew) the band well or not...Bottom line is...You re right, original band was the best..But if you compare the 1st three albums to the last 3 (with Kath), I think you'd admit that the first 3 were significantly better....But, that said, to be able to lose Kath, then Cetera and be able to maintain their position again at the top of the charts (1988-89) would'nt have happened without Bill Champlain (on vocals & keys)..
pilot9781 1 week ago
@EXTIQUE (2nd comment): If Lamm was such a great original (and he 'was', why didn't they give him songs to sing post 70's??)...Was it because, perhaps Champlain & Scheff were a better fit as time went on? Answer: YES...BTW, Chicago was getting pretty syrupy at the end of the Kath era anyway, so a change was due to happen anyway, just a shame that his life ended the way it did...Well, time to put on 'Hot Streets"...I loved that one too....Dacus, baby.

neverwasapunk16 2 years ago
Of course it's not Scheff's fault - he can't help it he can't sing. It's the group's fault for settling for such mediocrity.
fayette202 2 years ago 9
@fayette202 clearly you've never seen them live with Scheff. He's a great musician and a very talented singer that has only gotten better as he's gotten older. Can you say the same for Cetera? He's a non-factor in music these days, Scheff however, is still rocking it old school...
FYI I've seen Chicago live with Cetera then years later with Scheff, same great songs with a slightly different take.
80sjamming 8 months ago 2
@fayette202 --- That comment about Scheff not being able to sing is such bulls*it. Jason does a very respectable vocal representation of songs sang by Cetera.
Just because your a fan of Cetera's doesnt give you the right to take cheap shots at Jason. Recognize Scheff's talent as well while still stating you prefer Cetera's original versions. Musically speaking, Jason is spot on.
If you only intend to state that nobody is Cetera, that's true but credible musicians can sing like him and well.
mightytreasure 7 months ago
@mightytreasure I'm not a Cetera fan. I'm a fan of anyone who can carry a tune and not sing through his nose.
fayette202 5 months ago
@fayette202 Scheff can't sing? Have you listened to "Will you Still Love Me"? What heroine are you using because I want some.
JohnathanPozzi 5 months ago
@JohnathanPozzi Scheff can sing as well as you can spell.
fayette202 5 months ago
@JohnathanPozzi You may like him just fine. Great. Knock yourself out. Go buy all their post-Cetera stuff. But sadly, you're in the minority. Have you looked at their record sales since Scheff? Dismal and pathetic are adjectives that come to mind. As I said before, my beef is NOT with Scheff. It's with Lamm, Pankow, Parazaider and Lochnane for not maintaining their high standards they used to hold.
fayette202 4 months ago
Thanks for making my point better than I did. As you say, he WAS the face of the group - 20 years+ ago. BUT NOT NOW. It quit being about Cetera exactly one second after he resigned. Then it was up to the group to find a replacement who could fill his shoes. When it became obvious that Scheff wasn't the right choice they should have tried to find a real talent-a Michael McDonald-type who could really bring it. Barring a Santana-type comeback I don't see them ever returning to their 16-17 success.
fayette202 2 years ago
I agree, but I think this Cetera vs Scheff debate misses the point. It's not about Cetera and it hasn't been for over 20 years. (BTW, 17 went double platinum SIX times. 18 went gold once. Sales have been flat ever since.) It was apparent by 1990 that Scheff was not the future of the group. They knew back then that they needed a different vocalist to get the listening public's attention, but they chose to cast their lot with a Cetera-sound-alike and try to make their money on the road.
fayette202 2 years ago
Of course it's about Cetera, he was the face of the group. It also didn't help that Chicago offered up an inferior soundalike as his replacement. The band might have known in the long-term that Scheff was not the ideal choice, but they got caught up in the massive sales and exposure. Can't say I blame them because they were at their highest level.

Jason is better than Peter? Are you TONE DEAF?
Chicago 17 went double platinum - not once - but SIX times. That's more than the next 13 Chicago releases - COMBINED. If "Jason is better than Peter" how come their record sales are only a fraction of what they used to be with Cetera?
fayette202 2 years ago 3
I believe it's partly due to Cetera leaving the band and a shift in musical tastes. Of course, having a soundalike didn't help matters either, but I can't fault Scheff for doing what he was hired to do.

If there is ever a reunion concert with Cetera and Lamm, I will fly to anywhere in the country to see that concert. If Cetera was to come back, that would be a shot of energy into the arm of Chicago.
LRomero910 2 years ago 3
Breast Cancer research maybe?
fayette202 2 years ago 3
Some don't care for the Chicago ballad era. They stumbled onto it with "If You Leave Me Now." That was supposed to be filler and it ended up taking them to #1 - A place they'd never been before. Foster latched onto that and helped them re-invent themselves. Without a ballad era, they would have been done by 1978. As it turned out it extended their prominence another 10 years. Since 1990, basically an oldies band. Night and Day is the only thing they've done worthy of praise in the last 20 years.
fayette202 2 years ago 2
Chicago had hit ballads long before IF YOU LEAVE ME NOW. It actually started with "the ultimate prom song", COLOUR MY WORLD on Chicago II.
DracIsBack 2 years ago
You are correct, but the highest CMW ever charted was #7. IYLMN was their first #1 hit. Hot Streets and 13 had lukewarm sales and Chicago was floundering until David Foster helped re-invent them with the ballad hits on 16 and 17 which had their highest sales (by far) to date. Sadly they have essentially been relegated to the oldies band circuit since.
fayette202 2 years ago
The oldies stuff really happened post 1990. Chicago 18 and Chicago 19 brought a bunch of other top 20, top 10, top 5 and even a #1 hit.
DracIsBack 2 years ago
@DracIsBack True, i stand corrected - but i would be quick to add that Colour My World never hit #1.

They were the best with him and he was the best with them.
minnierv 2 years ago 3
I felt that in recent years that the band sounded tired. It wasn't that they couldn't play anymore, but that they were just dialing it in. The vocals are one of the reasons that I only go to a few Chicago concerts a year, Scheff should go back to trying to sound like Cetera, it worked better for him.

I have the sense that Peter left because of Peter. He wanted to go solo.
Peter has zero desire to be back with Chicago.
With all due respect, Chicago isn't Chicago without Terry and Danny.
Peter and Terry's vocal blend was really what made up the Chicago vocal sound.
Peter was a solo artist with Chicago as his backup band after David Foster came along.

I can actually understand why Seraphine was fired lol. His drumming in this specific video isnt up to speed as he used to be in the seventies. He's better now than he was then, but the eighties and nineties seemed to be alot simpler than his fast latin-style in the band's early days. I know these things, I am a drummer and play Chicago all the time.
guncontrol2006 3 years ago
Danny was not fired because of his drumming capabilities. Bill said it was because he was stiking his nose into business that did not concern him (ie overinflated ego). As for his drumming technique in the 80s, everything was going computer and Danny fell behind. He didn't like going digital. As for the Latin-style, that's attributed more to Laudir than Danny, but percussion is percussion and they complemented each other.
flashpenguin86 3 years ago 5

I just think he gave it up or at least stop doing significant bass work late in his career.
onecircle1 4 years ago 4
I absolutely agree when you say P.C was one of the top bass players in the world. I love the way he uses themes and variations in his bassplaying (starts simple then adds bits here and there as the song carries) !!! And over that, while he sings! My influence in the bass by far!

I always listen in complete awe at the sounds that man can produce with that truely unique voice of his. It's almost unbelieveble his vocal range, with someone who can speak so low, and sing so high.
