It's too bad RichRod did not hear this speech or he would still have a job right now. When he was coaching Michigan it was all about him and when Michigan lost he never owned it and instead threw his players under the bus.
@stevekach Next year or the following year is OUR year. All im saying is watch out Ohio State. Robinson and Forcier are only Juniors and last year we really only knew our whole team was our weak point. Now we know what we need to improve on (Defense), and once we do that were golden. This year if we had a D even half as good as Ohio State, we would have not had a problem winning every single game. Michigan State would not have been like that. So yes, we will return to that glory. Patience.
As this 2010 football season gets ready to begin, no words ring so true to a team under the grip of adversity. Being a MICHIGAN MAN is not a job, not a TITLE but a CALLING. The house that YOST built, the uniforms that FRITZ inspired, the character and determination that BO brought, a national title that LLOYD gave to us just prove that is gonna be MICHIGAN again MICHIGAN!!!!!!!!!!
@Kurzhal09 He might not have won a national title, but he had national title caliber teams (some that IMO should have been national champions, but I digress). He rescued the Wolverines from the depths they'd fallen in. Michigan under Bo Schembechler in just one year was far better than it was under Bump Elliot. But if you listen to this speech, that shows what kind of man Bo was. Also, Gary Moeller and Lloyd Carr can be considered of the Schembechler tree and Carr DID win a national title.
@Kurzhal09 He won 13 Big Ten Titles and went to the Rose Bowl 10 times. There was no BCS back then and for awhile there if you didn't win the Conference you didn't go to a bowl game. His integrity and the respect he had for the game made him someone you had nothing but admiration for. Unlike today where the National Title is the ultimate goal Bo set his and the team's sights on Big Ten Titles and the Rose Bowl.
@stevekach every year under rich rod we see improvement. I believe every coach should be given 4 years to coach because then his team is all of his recruits. I believe next year we will truly see what rich rod is made of.
I'm a Michigan fan and I know that shit is nowhere close to the truth... Got to fire the hick who's coaching Michigan now in order to get to the NC game in the future.
jl081577 lets not call for rich rods head now lets just wait for next year and if he do good next year after that i can see u of m going to the National Championship Game in the next 2 years or 3 years.
Sorry dude, go back and read your history book. Michigan's on it's way back. It takes more than a single season or even two to rebuild what was ultimately a decimated team.
Hint: The man who initially made this program great, and built it into a national powerhouse, who tallied our first 13 victories (and 17 of our first 19 to their 3) over Ohio State, Field H. Yost, came to us from the state of West Virginia. Relax and have some patience.
The team was decimated back in 1962 and 1963. (2-7, 3-4-2). Bump Elliot couldn't get the team on track. Enter Bo Schembechler, 1969... a man who didn't make excuses, whine about youth, bare cupboards, etc. He took the current players and got the most out of them. RR doesn't understand this since his beloved "system" only works with certain players.
Hint : Trying to compare Fielding Yost with RRod is laughable.
Bump Elliot took over the team in 59, genius. The team was decimated BY him as you'd notice that by 62/63 would be about the time his own recruits would start showing up.
In any case I've heard no whining from anyone save asshat fans like yourself. If you can't understand that no one is winning anything with what Carr left behind and it takes time to rebuild from scratch then maybe you'd be better off watching shuffleboard or something less complicated.
I never said Bump took over the team on a different date. It doesn't matter WHO brought Michigan down in the 60s, the point is, Bo took the talent around him and maximized it with positive results. (1 year, GENIUS!) RR gutted the program. Can't blame Carr for Boren, Mallett, Clemons, McGuffie, and Threet transferring. Also can't blame Carr for Arrington and Manningham leaving early. Paul Johnson, Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, and even Charlie Weiss did more with what was left behind than RR.
Then you make absolutely no point with the 60s team reference. You can't blame RR for Arrington and Manningham leaving. They weren't going to stay no matter who the coach was. Boren was too fat and lazy to do the work. Mallett was on his way out no matter who replaced Carr as he came to play for Lloyd. McGuffie had personal issues that caused him to leave and Threet transferred because he sucked and would never have started another game.
Put the Kool-Aid down and connect the dots. 60's team = Bump's players = average talent. Bo took that team and made them great in his FIRST YEAR. Today's team = Carr's players - above avg talent. RRod has driven this team into the ground. Get it? If you need more examples, try Nick Saban @ Bama, Meyer @ Florida, PAUL JOHNSON (FAR LESS TALENT) @ GT. Also, the "fat and lazy" Boren went to a better team and will be drafted high in the NFL. Your excuses for the others don't wash. GIve up.
Alright, put the joint down and listen up... Carr's team = above average talent?!! Yeah, Stevie Brown was great. Ezeh and Mouton? Outfuckingstanding (in a field, not fucking doing anything because they constantly missed assignments). It was Carr's SENIOR fucking team that lost to App State and Toledo and the BEST of them either graduated or left. Maybe you hadn't noticed but Carr's teams were never all that dominant. He won the NC with Moeller's seniors.
Yes, above average talent. Name a Carr recruiting class that was outside of the top 15. I'll save you some time, there isn't one. The loss to App State hurt, yet the season ended with 9 wins and a bowl win over Florida. How have RR's seasons at Michigan ended thus far? Don't answer, you'll only spout the same excuses of "they're too young" or "too many players don't fit his system" or "give RR time." Also, LOL at the "Moeller's seniors" comment. Give Lloyd SOME credit, geez.
Not much. Carr started out okay but his last seven seasons he consistently posted 9 and 3 records (with a 7 and 5 in there) which I'm fine with if you at the very least beat OSU a few times but once in eight games is not enough to offset that much mediocrity. We lost to App State AND Toledo and finished 9 and 4 which is basically just 9 and 3 with another loss. He beat Florida because, for his last game, he finally decided to open up the offense, something I'd been begging for for years.
RR, however, just fielded a team full of underclassmen who, if not for the mistakes his FRESHMAN quarterback playing in his first UM OSU game makes, could have won it handily. Or did you not notice them driving 40 and 50 yards up and down the field against what had been called one of the best defenses in the country? You like Saban and Meyer so much? Go root for them. You're just embarrassing the rest of the UM fans with your assinine logic. Just think, you can follow in Boren's footsteps.
Nice out to blame RRod's subpar coaching performance on Tate Forcier. OSU's defense had 3 of those 4 interceptions covered well. Also, "driving 40 and 50 yards" does a team no good if that offense can't finish. Tate has regressed, and it wasn't just in this game, it's been over time. Also, I admire coaches who don't blame everything around them, yet they work with what they have to achieve great results. YOU are embarrassing UM with the worship of a poor, arrogant Head Coach.
what does the NFL have to do with anything? As Bo said it doesn't mean shit. Boren left because he didn't want to try and fight for his job and he didn't that, not the whole "legacy" thing. If he cared about the Legacy of Michigan he wouldn't have transferred to OSU
How do you know that's why Boren left? Seriously? The point is, he is a talented O-lineman who left Michigan (ALONG WITH MANY OTHERS). He claims it was because of RR and his staff. Who are we to say he's lying? Just a thought : Perhaps he DID care about the Legacy of Michigan, and he was disturbed since RR was destroying that legacy! "NO COACH IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE TEAM." When RR is kicked to the curb, all of you RR fans please leave the fanbase and follow him.
How about until that happens YOU leave. No fan is more important than the team and right now this coach is part of this team. All you do with your senseless meandering is drag it down.
Maybe you should go back and look at Michigan's legacy. Tell me when was the last time UM fired a head coach? We're not fucking Notre Dame or Ohio State. Michigan does NOT fire head coaches.
@JL081577, Brandon Graham had an interview about it, and Boren was the only decent person who left, you can't destroy the legacy of a 100+ year program in one season. Current RR fans are Michigan fans and we support everything about Michigan. Your probably a piece of shit fairweather fan, who when the coach doesn't do good, wants them to be fired. I bet you led calls for Carr to be fired during 7-5, and now that were not doing great, you want to fire RR. Nevermind how far that would set us back
Current RR fans support A COACH, not a team. 100+ years of football is BEING TURNED TO CRAP because of a man and his "system." I'm a true fan who cares about THE TEAM, not a man. You probably own a "In Rod We Trust" T-shirt, eh? Pathetic. Just do the true fans a favor and follow RRod when he's kicked out of Ann Arbor.
i don't own a t-shirt like that. If you care so much about the team, then why don't you support the coach? Last i checked, the coach was part of the team. The Michigan AD department is sticking with Rich Rod, so we follow them. All the real fans support every aspect of Michigan Football, no matter how bad it's gotten.
@dunnyb41 I did Carr, he never wanted to blow a team away, always wanted to win by a touchdown, than called off the dogs, we lost to Appalaccian that way, RR on the other hand gutted Delaware state, but thats just an oppinion

osu5inarow you need what 15 in a row to even tie the series? I mean please we dominated the 90s and 80s so I guess you can have a momentary win still doesnt compare to our longest winning streak
its a shame you disrespect a man who helped make this rivalry what it is today. go to another Michigan video and trash them there. You show no class and you make your school look like a bunch of ass clowns way to go OSU, way to go. soon to be Pay for their players State University
It has always been about the TEAM with Michigan A group of young men fighting for each other bleeding for each other because in the End its your Team mates and the Team there will be there for you on and off the feild
I'm a Buckeye fan through and through, but Bo was a hell of a man. This is a great speech. He and Woody defined this rivalry and I'm really disappointed that Rich Rod doesn't really seem to understand The Game. Hopefully we'll see another 10 year war sometime soon.
I was pretty much saying the same thing when Ohio State hired Cooper in 1988. Couldn't wait until he got the axe. I understand you feel the same way about Rodriguez.
I love The Ohio State Buckeyes. But I can't deny that without Bo or Lloyd, "the game" probably wouldn't have been so exciting. All respects to Bo. Ohio St. will always respect Bo.
I couldn't agree more. BO was class. If you can't realize that, then I feel sorry for you. He was pure class. He was also a student of Woody Hayes==who is a LEGEND. GO BUCKS!!!!!
Agree with you guys. I'm glad us wolverines can agree with you buckeyes on some things. Bo and Woody will always be legends and Michigan and Ohio State will always be the class of the big 10, just as "the game" will always be the best rivalry and biggest b10 game every season.
Bo is so right, a team almost always beats a group of talented individuals. I'm from Ohio and our high school won some state championships in years they were not as talented as past squads that had more talent but didn't win it all. PLay together, Buckeyes play as a team or all the talent wont matter.
I hope that Rodriguez has watched this over and over again so he gets what it means to be apart of TRADITION! Bo is Michigan...always has and always will be.....MICHIGAN!
thanks so much for posting this speech. wish there was video for it. it was unbelievably moving. love bo or not, because i know a lot of buckeyes will stumble across this, you cannot question his passion, pride, courage, and leadership. he of course was a successful coach, but even if he wasnt, he would still be all of those things. bo.....you will always be in our hearts.....you wll always be the face of our football program....and you will always be a michigan man.
One thing you can say about Woody: He was mentor to the greatest football coach ever. BO SCHEMBECHLER.

A bucks fan who has respect for "The Game"? Finally...thank you.

When Bo died, they showed the video of this speech on ESPN - haven't been able to find it otherwise. Rivals Jimmy V's ESPY speech!

Bo is so right, a team almost always beats a group of talented individuals. I'm from Ohio and our high school won some state championships in years they were not as talented as past squads that had more talent but didn't win it all. PLay together, Buckeyes play as a team or all the talent wont matter.

Not sure if Rodriguez can say that because all he has done so far is for a contract!

thanks so much for posting this speech. wish there was video for it. it was unbelievably moving. love bo or not, because i know a lot of buckeyes will stumble across this, you cannot question his passion, pride, courage, and leadership. he of course was a successful coach, but even if he wasnt, he would still be all of those things. bo.....you will always be in our hearts.....you wll always be the face of our football program....and you will always be a michigan man.
