  • does this also work with a 19x19 board?

  • how is it that you can win by half a point?

  • As black gets to make the first move, he is at an advantage, to compensate for the disadvantage of white, the white player gets a 5,5 or 6,5 points head-start (on a 19x19board) the reason why they decided to add the 0,5 to the head-start of 5 or 6 is so that a tie game is impossible, there is always a winner.

  • @SenseiPanic i know it's just a manga, but in Hikaru no Go there are ties. is that an exception or just done b/c it's fiction.

  • I don't really remember any ties in Hikaru no Go and can only think of 1 situation where a tie can occur, that is in handicap games. To make up for the difference in game level between two unevenly matched players, a handicap can be given (going from a 1 stone to a 9 stone head-start). When one plays a handicap game, white doesn't get the compensation of 5,5 of 6,5 points.

  • That makes sense because it would undo one of the handicap stones if it were given. So, a 1 stone handicap game = the lesser skilled player gets to play with black and start the game while white does not get any compensation for giving up that first move. (A two stone handicap game being the same but with and extra stone for black at the start of the game, a 3 stone handicap game... etc)

  • @SenseiPanic i see, that fits too, b/c Akira Toya was playing 4 teaching games when the ties were done, and so they all had handicaps. this is in volume 9

  • Right I forgot about that, thx for the reminder, it has been too long since I last seen those episodes

  • @Bardoftoday It's not an exception. In handicap games typically there is no komi (not even 0.5) by tradition; and jigo can occur.

  • I just joined the GO club in my school, and I've really had no clue how to play. xD Thanks very much for the videos! C: I think they'll help in my first match tomorrow!

  • @Blu0Blur0Lover0 OMG LUCKY D: Where do you live? (like the country)

  • no problem, i'll try to add some more later! Hope you can love go and find the courage to continue and become an amazing player
