This attack is even more dangerous if you extend your thumb rather than keep it flat against your hand. The knife hand tends to cup on impact when the thumb is against the hand.

But to counter, all you have to do is flex the muscles in your neck and shoulder...it hurts like a bitch, but you're not going to drop. Well, we are marines, we dont use martial arts... almost ever, we never get that close to an enemy. Name the last time a combat scenario turned to hand to hand... and besides, the reason we use our kife hand is becuase we are trying to kill someone with it in a real combat situation. it's not the carotid artery you're striking, it's the exposed portion of the vagus (pgneumogastric) nerve...there are four spots on the side of the neck you can strike...the direct sudden impact to the gangleon in that area overloads the autonomic nervous system...it's basically the equivalent of getting tasered...i.e., an overload of electrical stimulation hijacks the communication lines from brain to limbs, which is why you see him sieze up like that...

This is a fairly common knockout. One of the most plausible theories of how this works is that the sudden impact on the carotid artery causes a pressure spike on the carotid sinus, which contains a mechanism which helps regulate blood pressure. The spike makes it look like you have a sudden dangerous rise in blood pressure, so the mechanism shuts down the pressure to your brain, and you pass out from the lack of blood to the brain.
