  • Gillian Murphy, flat, no spark, going through the motions, please, leave it to the Russians to bring the fire & perfection.

  • her arms are bothering me... but that was awsome :)

  • to think the hours and hours she trained, only to have morons come along and be rude.

  • Comment removed

  • Her center is amazing even if it isn't perfect o.O

  • and she's not dizzy :)

  • Amazing. Except for her arms

  • the best. always.

  • holy shit thats awesome

  • WOW I HAVE WATCHED THIS VID LIKE 80 TIMES AND IT JUST GETS BETTER IN MY EYES! it feels like your actually there in the ballroom scene, as Prince Sigfried gets seduced by the Beautiful Odile that Murphy plays so amazingly!

  • I think it is funny that on almost every video of the black swans Fouettes someone has commented ''ATTACK IT ATTACK IT'' :)

  • @brownballerina97 so much fun! :D

  • :O wow it makes me dizzy just looking at it.. im rubbish at spotting

  • Fail!!! I meant your arms are wrong

  • Your ar,m

  • I think her arm is like that to be parallel to her working leg.

  • the best timing of all the codas... she's amazing

  • not that I mind - what is a ballet production without practice? ;)

  • do fouettes always have to be done on the left foot? I'm left handed and it would seem left legged as well, and I find it easier to balance whenever I put my weight on my right leg and my left leg is in the air. I just seem to have more control over my left side, sounds weird, I know, but my right leg has a mind of its own. I haven't attempted fouettes yet, but I'll be moving onto them sometime in 2012. Am I just going to have to practice, practice, practice?

  • @TheEnglishRedRose well, i tend to be more dominant on the left leg (like, my turns tend to be better) but i'm right handed, haha. I can understand the thing about your other leg going weird, that happens to me too ^^ i don't go to a dance school, i just try to learn off tutorials on youtube, but idk about you...

  • @TheEnglishRedRose It's not weird, it happens to me aswell all the time. The weird thing with me is that I have better balance on my right foot while my left foot is much more flexible, so ,even though I have tried billion times, I can't do fouettes at all on my left foot but on my right ,untill now, I have managed to do I think 4-6

  • Gillian Murphy and Aurelie Dupont are my favourite ballet dancers.

Gillian as black swan is very beauty. She dances very smoothly

  • @MrsAurellie You seriously just can't compare Gillian Murphy to Aurelie Dupont! Aurelie Dupont is one of the best ballerinas of our time, extremely graceful and elegant, with a very neat, nearly perfect technic, and such a great comedian on top of that! Nothing in common with Gillian Murphy...

  • What I see in Gilliam Murphy's performance are gracefull and natural movements they don't seem force likes other performance I have see.

  • Unplug, unplug, unplug the darn wire!!!

  • And just when he was about to spin the video ended. lol. nahh bless him

  • Boas,

Qual o titulo do dvd deste espectacular Ballet? Gostava de adquirir o mesmo mas não sei a qual pertence este excerto, pois existem vários versões no mercado. Um bem haja e Boas Festas!

  • do you think she sings to herself... aaaaand fouette and fouette and fouette and piroette piroette... and fouette and fouette and fouette and piroette piroette and fouette and fouette and piroette some more!

ive maintained for years that this fits!

  • I haven't found another Swan as graceful as Gillian Murphy

  • @TheKingsDaughter07 Something tells me you haven't seen many other Swan Lake performances in video or otherwise...

  • Love this video she's really talented.

  • I wouldn't try doing that with half a mirror in my abs.

  • @TheFrostickles Lets not mention Black Swan on real talent like this...

  • @MomilyMoon Right you are.. Apologies.

  • two words: Killer fouettés

  • And let's not overlook that guy at the beginning! Too much talent!

  • Just when you think she might go out of time, she's right back in there :O

  • Just so talented... it is just so amazing. Beautiful.

  • perpetual motion

  • I believe that unless any of us are capable of doing that to perfection, we have no room to judge her for "sloppy arms" or anything else. I thought she did very well!

  • I'd rather see quality over quantity. I'm not interested in triple fouettes if they are done incorrectly. This is perfect circus.

  • @MlleOdilette I would love to see you so better.

  • @MlleOdilette Really? I don't understand very well about ballet, but, for me, the Gillian's fouettes are very beautiful.

  • @DiegoRenan13 Look for Aurelie Dupont Black Swan on YouTube ("Le lac des cygnes (Rudolf Noureev) - Aurélie Dupont & Mathieu Ganio - coda"), then you'll see why Gillian Murphy's fouettes are everything but beautiful... 32 fouettes executed with the same rhythm; perfect rotation of the feet, unfolding of the right leg, bearing of the head and arms, balance of the left leg and of the general movement; utmost grace and serene look on the face... that's what I call beautiful fouettes!!!

  • @MlleOdilette they are very proper triple fouettes so you shouldnt criticize her and anyways u cant do triple fouettes if u dont have goood form. its just not nice because she probs worked really hard and ballet is harder than u think

  • Comment removed

  • @MlleOdilette ur being a troll ur saying mean things to people then removing them so noone else can see

  • Senior moment & deleted a pm - so to the sender I can only say the arm position you call 1st is not recognised as correct classical placing in UK nor is the a la seconde, and elbows should not drop below level of hands, not even for singles. I hasten to add I much preferred 'American' arms for fouettes in training (yrs ago) but not allowed to use them! 'American' arms allow you to pull them in faster & tighter esp. for multiples. As a 'dazzle' moment they certainly work here.

  • What's the title of the music please?

  • Comment removed

  • just started fouttes in class, THANK GOD I used to ice skate, otherwise I would have broken my butt by now ^^

    spotting is a dancer/skater's best friend :)

  • Attack it! Attack it!! :D

  • @trissty Black swan....

  • i heard that she hurt her shoulder as a reason why her figure isnt completely correct

  • Such a dexterity and precision!

  • sloppy arms. :/

  • It's not 32, but this is so much better. I can't even imagine being good enough to throw out triplets like that. Her precision is amazing!

  • Seriously amazing with those turns

  • Legs of a steel. Which what you need to be able to do it.

  • I must admit, i've. never liked the way fuettes looked on pointe. However, hers are flawless. I'm so excited, I actually get to be in a show with her!

  • effin fantastic!

  • Not sure I an agree with your first line here. Yes, Vaganova arms are different to Western arms (very young Vaganova students hang from gym bars, which is why they end up with such fantastically elongated arms!) But to get her triples in GM has to have the arms the way she does - pure arm positions as they had to be for the original singles won't work. Some like it and some don't, and it's pretty special the way she stays fairly sur place - not easy.

  • I'm no dancer so I won't judge. I have a hardcore respect for ballerinas in general.

  • awful arms and bad passe, this is perfect circus! If you want to see the real Black Swan, go watch a Mariinsky ballerina..

  • @MlleOdilette

gillian is the real black swan

    shut up your all !!!

  • @MJinLKL Ok, relax. And no one dances Swan Lake like a true Vaganova ballerina

  • @MlleOdilette Thanks but but this former RB dancer is quite relaxed - relaxed enough to pass on a useful tip given to me YEARS ago before I started pointe and it certainly worked for me. Hope someone finds it useful. (Sheesh, fancy passing on a ballet tip on a ballet site). Agree she is brilliant of course and I love the Russians but I prefer the more subtle appoach in this role favoured by the likes of Makarova.

  • @MrKLT1945 I wasn't telling you to relax, my comment was directed to MJinLKL who told me SHUT UP! just so you know. Makarova is my favorite also.

  • @MlleOdilette Sorry for that - memo to self to ALWAYS wear glasses at the computer, it does help esp.at my age! One of the benfits of old age is having danced behind Nureyev and Makarova and still being around to see all the current great dancers.

  • Gillian, I love you!

  • I'm not a dancer, merely a lover of dance (I'm actually a gymnast . . . why that's relevent, I don't know :p ) but I was wondering how difficult is it to go en pointe? And are fouettes the hardest of the hard?

    Thanks ^^

  • @TheEnglishRedRose once you've built up the strength pointe shoes aren't necessarily difficult, it becomes second nature (just as I'm sure it's for you having to know where to land from a flip on a balance beam or something). The difficult part is maintaining strength and keeping your feet from getting blisters or sores because then pointe shoes can be the worst. Fouettes are scary to learn but in my opinion a lot easier than you would think once you've gotten past the initial fear

  • @xanadu191 Agreed, and if young pre-pointe ballet students would get into the habit of soaking their feet in surgical spirit for about 10 minutes every day it would toughen the skin enormously! Oh, and perfect technique helps too!

  • @xanadu191 I guess in a way, they are scary. Because one has the fear of breaking or twising the ankle. Eh, my impression of fouettes is just that they look confusing to me. I never really understood when does the dancer put the foot down and when do you rise up again? I mean, I'd love to watch the dancer do fouettes slower so I can observe the moves.

  • @Marigold0156 These fouettes can't be done slowly - it's the powerful thrust (releve) that gets you up en pointe, Only way would be to film them with that wonderful slow-mo technical thing that's used a lot in sport now.

  • @MrKLT1945 Eh..they're confusing, just the same. I can't even observe the movements cuz its going so fast. lol

  • @Marigold0156 Imagine if you were the Prince - would you would be dazzled enough by this to forget she's actually the bad guy in this act, which is what she and her pa planned! her strength and timing are amazing. lol

  • @MrKLT1945 I never said she wasn't good.

  • @Marigold0156 Not saying you did - just asking if her performance would bedazzle. I am in awe of those triples. I could occasionally could throw out a triple en pointe in training, which was as much a surprise to me as it was to my teacher! Easier in soft pointes but that wouldn't do in performance!

  • @MrKLT1945 Yeah. But I"m sure those spins took years to master. I even tried doing it in soft shoes. They're hard and frustrating. I can only do half a spin. Sometimes one spin. I don't get how people manage to do 3 or 4 spins.

  • @TheEnglishRedRose *but also to do them with the control that Gillian Murphy has takes a lottttttttttt of work. Theres a reason she's one of the best :) by the way i didn't mention this earlier, despite all the complaining people like to do about how pointe shoes can hurt blah blah blah, they are the greatest joy to have and can give you the most incredible feelings. most of the time theyre what pulls the whole picture together and takes it to the next level

  • The only flaw is that she didn't actually do Petipa's 32 grand fouette (but then again, I've only seen it done twice in my life). Otherwise, impeccable.

  • @GabrielleduVent Grand fouette is a different member of the ballet 'Turning' Steps family, and is not in this solo. I don' t think any ballerina these days would restrict herself to the original 32 single fouette rond de jambes originally choroegraphed - some ppl might think she 'can't dance'! Sill amazing how little GM travels given she throws out those trebles! Huge strength and control.

  • Senior moment meant I did a t ypo earlier - 'Hasher' should have read 'Harsher'! I found multiple spins a bit easier to perform with these (GM's) arm positions but not allowed in British training years ago! We weren't throwing out triples with comparative ease and if one occasionally did a triple it was pure luck only! Ballet world has moved on and none the worse for that in many ways.

  • @MrKLT1945 You seem to think that I dislike this video or Gilliam Murphy, and I don't. In fact, I have this DVD and I have watched it several times, and I don't usually watch things I dislike more than once. I understand the difference in the arms between the White and Black acts, but I was referring to Murphy's arms as Odette. But in my opinion is kind of pointless to compare dancers from different companies since their trainings (and sometimes, choreography) are completely different

  • This former pro. ballet dancer wasn't a dancer from the age of 7, merely a ballet student from the age of 7. I became a dancer only after years of training and still only good enough for RB corps. GM stays sur place helluva lot more than others do/did, whether ppl like her arms or not. 'Hasher ' arms needed to show the diff. between Black & White swans!

  • @MrKLT1945 Could you please drop it already? At least have the decency to reply to me directly rather than leaving snarky comments about whether or not I'm a student or a dancer or whatever. You understood me perfectly. And like I said, I don't need any lectures on this art from the likes of you.

  • i'm not criticizing, i just don't like them.

  • 今まで見た中で、一番最高の「グラン・フェッテ」の32回転だった、前半と後半の回転の変化など、超人的だ~~

  • THE REST.

  • Sigh....First rule of immature 'debate' is to use childish insults to ppl who don't share your oinion. No-one can 'do' steps en pointe unless they can dance en pointe! Performing steps en pointe & dancing are, strangely, the same. But what do retired prof. (ex-Royal Ballet) dancers know about pointe work compared to great depth of ballet knowledge gained by NP fans courtesy of one film & a shitload of hype. Let's discuss here Murphy's fouettes & how her arms R used for multiple spins.

  • Comment removed

  • NP has absolutely NO turnout, sickle feet, weak and stiff from head to toe and no more capable of pointe work fit to be seen than she is of coming close to Olympic gymnastic stuff after a year - hence the baby pink soft satins for her BS grand entrance, not even able to waddle onstage in pointes for that. What was going on in that 'training?' It sure as hell wasn't ballet as we know it. Ain't CGI & mega-hype grand? That's my last word on here re. that film. This is great!

  • Comment removed

  • What song is this one?

  • Is this in Italy? I thought she was great. It does seem like she titled to one side a bit as one of her arms were lower than the other. But hey! Not just anybody can do that, enjoyed watching <3

  • She is wearing pointe shoes!! She is not wearing flats!! NP wore flats in that crap film BS.

  • @MrKLT1945

Nat is an actress not a dancer jeez calm your tits

  • @theamazingsoter Have you ever heard of a double? She never ever stood en pointe! a dancer from ABT stood in for her at the pointe shoe scenes... She barely had training for 6 months! She wouldn't got any approvement to stand on pointe shoes at all...

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • @theamazingsoter I can read thanks.. Wearing pointe shoes is a whole other thing than dancing in them! If you ever had them on yourself you might know this... I did watch but still it is a whole other thing.. But even having training for a year doesn't gain your a allowance to dance in pointe shoes you barely know how to dance in..

  • Comment removed

  • @theamazingsoter you have to dance ballet for at least 3 years to go en pointe, and that's only if your teacher allows you...

  • Comment removed

  • @contortionist104

    shut up

  • she is a Pro she went all the way up on her toes on reg ballet shoes not pointe shoes :O Great job

  • one day...

  • I think that everyone that is criticizing her should jus shut up unless you can do better. She is amazing and i agree that this may not be to everyones taste, but why spoil everyone else's pleasure by leaving an offensive comment

  • Laughing at everyone who is criticizing this. So amusing!

  • For all you meanies who keep telling me they are called fouettes, shut the heck up. I am only 15 leave me alone I was trying to be funny I've never been in pointe so how should I know??? I've always loved ballet and took classes all my childhood. What are yalls problems why would you fuss at me just because I called them sig spin thingies!!! honestly just shut up if your gonna be stupidly mean!!!

  • @SydneyLiptonShow

Don't take it to heart. After all, you are "only 15," so just ignore the "meanies" and their negative comments, which they directed at you to make themselves feel superior. I like the term "spin thingies" actually. It is more descriptive than "fouettes"--unless, of course, you happen to speak French.:)

  • @petrina1022 Excuse me, but this "meanie" here was just trying to help someone, not to feel superior. It wasn't a negative comment at all. And you don't need to speak French to know what a fouetté is, just ask any ballet student or balletomane. Maybe you should just shut up and not answer to comments like hers that just want to stir up the drama.

  • @theamazingsoter

your "help" was neither solicited nor helpful.

  • @petrina1022 Excuse me? ...what did I say?

  • @SydneyLiptonShow Actually I think that's a cute and accurate description. They are a signature part of the Black Swan (no way can they be omitted!) role and here GM certainly spins! I won't tell you some of the ways we described certain moves in my pro. ballet days - this is a family show! lol

  • messy feet and messy arms

  • Looks more like an ostrich to me

  • @adamlamper Umm have you ever tried to do 32 fouettes? Obviously not!

  • @adamlamper When have you tried 27 fouettes with triple pirouettes in-between? This is an almost impossible task.

  • @adamlamper ok so aside from the poor choice of costumes, what do you think of the dancing?

  • @loulie1997 I think the dancing is wonderful

  • you can see she's exhausted

  • gillian is the best swan queen !!

  • I wish people who know FUCK ALL about ballet would just stop criticizing. Gillian is amazing.

  • @moonyisalive

i agree with you, Gillian is my idol

i don't think her arm is a problem

  • gillian murphy is my role model i love her so much

  • Omg!!! Amazing PERFECTION

  • @HIGHCHEEKBONES2010 I agree! She has the best form and Powerfull Piruetes ! She is my Ballet Goddess.

  • My heart aches when I see that because I know that I will never reach such perfection!

  • @MyLillteFallenAngel Hey Sweetheart you're only 15 don't give up so soon, Besides you are trying to reach to high , be satisfied just to be able to get into a good ballet company for now. Perfection takes a lot of work and dedication, It will come in time once you set your heart on it !

  • @nicktesla45 Thank you! =) And no, I am not givng up that fast!

  • beautiful

  • DAYUM is she barefoot???????? NOW im impressed.

  • @cold3crystal What do you mean? She is using pointe shoes ( Gaynor Miden, which is the brand, possibly?)

  • you make it look so easy

  • amazing love her turns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Unless you guys are all NYCB Principal dancers, you can just shut up about everything you're criticizing her for. She's absolutely effortless.

  • @BroadwayBaby08 Or ABT, oops, sorry. =) hehe.

  • @BroadwayBaby08 sorry to nit pick but she's an ABT principal. :P but I totally agree, hate it when people criticize world class dancers!

  • @Lucyballet1994 I believe I corrected myself in another comment, but perhaps it got lost. I know, me too! Get a life, people!

  • @BroadwayBaby08 sorry :P it was a top rated commented so I just replied off that, but yep they need to get a life!

  • @BroadwayBaby08 YES! I can see VERY few mistakes but not many at all and I know I could never dance like that (esp. in point!)! she is very beautiful.

  • for me her arms really bothered me, and she seemed really shakey when =S she wasn't staying at one spot but rather moved around alot and her supporting leg was slightly bent

  • @xazngiirlx its really difficult to stay at the same spot. but otherwise i agree!

  • @MsMARYCHAIN hahahaha yeh! i know its hard its just i think its cuz her supporting leg was slightly bent that after coming down after every turn she went slightly off balance therefore she couldnt stay at the same spot and moved around alot =P

  • @xazngiirlx No Pr ballerina on the planet has ever stayed exactly 'sur place' - it is just about impossible and has nothing to do with the knees - it's the eyes/neck alignment. I've seen and still see many Russians who wander more than GM. The worst 'offender' was Fonteyn , described by one dance critic as taking a Cook's Tour (a travel agency) of the stage during her fouettes. But artistry and phrasing are the most important elements of ballet.

  • @MrKLT1945 all im trying to say is she looks as though she's about to fall upside any second

  • more than 40???

    wow...

  • These fouettes are the essence of Odile.... Breathtaking, attention grabbing..... absolutely mind blowingly insane in every single way.

  • @chocolatefan1711 5 ft 6 in.

  • How tall is she??

  • Her arms are in the right position for her training. Some dancers are trained to turn with their arms pulled in, like the way you do with partners. I personally am not but I've seen a lot of dancers who are. So her arms are fine. And <3 her fouettes!

  • @BejeweledMoon Correct. Very American, these fouette arms and quite dazzling, just as they are meant to be to take the Prince's eye. To those woi ask about the numbers - she actually only does 26 fouettes to enable her to get her triples in. The number of times 'spinning' within one fouette do not count as separate fouettes. She throws in almost all the triples at the start, before she gets tired.

  • @MrKLT1945 I like 32 "normal" fouettées better than this mess, I have to admit. I am not so much into ballet, though. What's your opinion?

  • @AAATOR "this mess" ???? jesus christ... people, you are pathetic. she is doing it absolutely right. there is nothing wrong with her arms or with her feet.

  • @AAATOR I am from a by-gone era & admit to preferring the purity of the original 32 fouettes & the ballerina remaning sur place (on the spot, as was expected of us in my day) and which is the true test of fouettes rond de jambe. These days throwing in doubles AND triples is expected but can come across as a tad untidy. The arms are the way they are to enable her to get the multiples in. Mighty impressive but not to everyone's taste I must admit. The aim is to dazzle the Prince, so she succeeds.

  • is it just me or did she do quite a few more than 32?

  • her arms are not in the correct posture

  • @MonChiCle they are.

  • i love so much her fouettes !

  • Okay, I'm obsessed with Polina Semionova's Odile, but even she can't top Gillian Murphy's fouette sequence... of course the fouettes are only a small part of the Odile variation, but still! They're breathtaking!

  • The orchestra is playing!!! keep silence!

  • her famous triplettes (triple fouetté) !!

  • Omg she is AMAZING words can not describe her she is official my new dance idol

  • she can dance..just wounderful

  • that amazing...

  • The video is wonderful:)

  • I love Gillian. She's an amazing dancer and a very beautiful woman. One of the prettiest ballerinas I've ever seen.

  • lol see if them breakdancers can spin on them toes instead of their heads

  • this is so awesome!

  • Her legs are amazing but her arms aren't straight, they're flimsy.

  • @wonderangel987 Shes not a fucking robot? I'd like to see you do that.

  • AHHHHH!!!!

  • 38! BETTER THAN THE NORMAL 32! OMG!
