I basically read every single Star Wars novel from Heir to the Empire and onward for the entire 90s. Then they killed Chewbacca in this book. That pretty much cured me and I only dipped into the EU a bit more selectively, mostly for any more Zhan novels.
I wouldn't mind actually re-reading / reading for the first time this entire series, but it's 19 friggin novels! Can a brother get a Ominbus, Lucasbooks?
I pisses me off this is the only time the people at Lucus have asked Mark Hamill to come back and voice Luke. Everytime they have a game or something with Luke they get unknowns. Hello Mark is one of the greatest voice actors of our time.
The New Jedi Order is the only SW series worth reading. Almost everything set before it sucks (I, Jedi was pretty good, and a few others are decent). Everything set after DOES suck.
The writers got uncomfortable because they actually tried new and interesting concepts with NJO, so they set out to retcon everything without actually retconning it. Jacen is a hero who doesn't believe in the light side? Make him go evil. Vergere is a complex, interesting character? Make her a Sith. It's pathetic.
@ShallowBayBandit Clearly, you have no taste in SW books. Series before NJO that are good: Darth Bane, Republic Commando, The Old Republic, Coruscant Nights, The Bounty Hunter Wars, and Jedi Academy. And I understand maybe not liking Swarm Wars, as it was a bit slow for 1 1/2 books, but Legacy of the Force was amazing, and Fate of the Jedi is amazing to at least Backlash (that's all I can say about Fate cus I just finished Backlash).
@ShallowBayBandit Now to Jacen and Vergere. Jacen has his views tested during the Yuuzhan Vong war and was corrupted by Lumiya at the onset of the Second Galactic Civil War. Vergere was never a Sith. She hardly even used the Dark Side. She was a Force user that was not Jedi or Sith. And yes, she is a complex, interesting character b/c it's hard to figure out any loyalties beyond Jacen.
ya..he dies in "star by star" novel which is the 9th novel in the NJO core series...bout 1/2 way through because there are 19 novels and then a few e-novelas and short stories and a comic..
Almost eerie to hear Mark Hamill playing Luke again after all these years. Cool commercial. If only the NJO series had turned out to be worthwhile. I miss the old Bantam days of STAR WARS novels. :(
I disagree with you completely, I bought about 17 of the 19 books and thoroughly enjoyed all of them. Some of them are solid reads and have some of the most epic events ever. Star By Star and The Unifying Force are more interesting than most of the movie sequences if you have an imagination.
I agree with you man! However, this commercial makes me want to read the book! But if it cheers you up, I don't believe any of this happens! George says, "It's the DV story." But this commercial is interestting
I was gonna say good for you, but apparently not. Even still, if you got her back in the day, when she was all fine and princessy, then kudos. But if you got her now... AAUHG DARK SIDE!
"What the Empire would have done was build a supercolossal Yuuzhan Vong-killing battle machine. They would have called it the Nova Colossus... Galaxy Destructor or the Nostril of Palpatine or something equally grandiose... And you know what would have happened?
That gives me, a struggling author, an idea for a book! Pffftt! Kidding! Hahaaha.
I always had issues with those superweapons. The Death Star, I can understand. Start out big. Good for them. But those World Devastators, Galaxy Gun, Eye of Palpatine? Damn. Not only bad names but can you image going to the bank to get credit approval to build 'em? Shit.
And damn Palpatine, too. Why didn't he continue using his Sidious name. That's way eviller.
@xion1212 No. It was decent, in that it challenged basic conceptions of the Force, and killed people off and was a real, gritty, war. But Thrawn Trilogy and first four of the X-Wing series easily beat it out. I, Jedi is also on par. I just hate, as was mentioned below, that they basically retconned everything related to ambiguity in dark/light side in later novels. Vergere is NOT a SITH, and the Unified Force exists. Period. Stupid that they negated the entire premise of the last novel's title.
The Empire would build some huge superweapon and called it the "Galaxy Destroyer" or the "Doom Crusher" and brought it up against the Vong, costing trillions of credits. But it would have one weak spot that would (for some reason) destroy the entire space station. One Vong pilot would fire at that spot, destroying the station, and the Vong would win. End of story.
Yeah, no kidding. It's a great series. I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens to Jacen/Darth Caedus. I'm pretty sure Jaina will kick his ass, hehehe
The whole series kicks ass, though I understand that there are a lot of fans who don't like it. It's cool to see some serious darkness in the Star Wars universe (not that Palpatine and Vader were any picnic, hehehe)
I read it and I remember someone in the book saying that the vong would have whipped the Empire. I found this hard to belive since it seems the Vong made sure the Galactic Empire was gone be the time they invaded.
After seeing the indecisive response of the New Republic during the invasion out of fear of becoming like the empire yet still managing to inflict horrible losses on the Yuuzhan Vong, it's obvious to me that the Empire with its willingness to use any means necessary to win wars would have destroyed the Yuuzhan Vong.
In one of the novels, the daughter of an Imperial Captain stated something along these lines that the Empire would've given the Vong no quarter.
*SPOILER ALERT* The Vong are invisible in the Force because they were deliberately cut off from it; their connection to it was severed when their warlike ways destroyed their original homeworld, Yuuzhan'tar, which was a living planet with its own connection to the Force...
Lightsabers do affect them, except I believe for the "Slayers," who were genetically engineered to fight Jedi...
The Vong waited for the EMpire to be outta there before they invaded. If Vader and the Emperor were still in power, the Vong would have gotten crushed.
pretty epic. for 1999.

1. Chewie died a heroic death.
2. The Yuuzhan Vong are awesome and scary.
3. Anakin turned to to the Dark Side and had it coming.
TurnipBob123 2 years ago
1. That was immediately nullified by #3.
2. Point.
3. And set the stage for the long fall into the abyss that SW Lit has taken lately.

Err... Luna's talking about Anakin Solo, not Anakin Skywalker, and Anakin Solo never fell to the Dark Side.
