I'm sorry, the finale of Meistersinger is "a bit too precise" for an immediate association to Furtwängler. See the wonderful film "Taking Sides" to get this comment. The seemingly endless project of apportioning blame to Furtwängler goes on ad infinitum. This is truly sad because F. was completely exonerated in post-war de-nazification hearings and "von" Karajan, who was a card-carrying member of the party during the war, never had any subsequent problems.

Israel would not allow his music to be performed there for years and if they have lifted the ban, they are still very ambivalent about it.

The finest versions of Wagner's music I have ever heard are by Otto Kemperer --a JEWISH conductor, and Herbert von Karajan.

Wagner was extremely anti-Jewish even though his wife,Kosima's, mother( Her father was Franz Liszt) may have been descended from Shefardic Jews. Some time ago I joined the school choir in performing some song for a special occasion. We were talking about other kinds of music, and when I said I loved Wagner, one of the guys (a fine, schooled musician) said: "You listen to Hitler's music". No further comment needed.
