I think the fact that she smoked so much lent her voice an edge...an edge that is missing from so many modern singers, save a few. All my favorite vocalists are/have been smokers....Dionne Warwick, Dusty Springfield, Adele.....it gives their voice that roughness....it's sort of the opposite of autotune-ing
I had a photo taken at the Menzies hotel in Melbourne with Julie cuddled up to me, but my bitch of an ex wife tore it up. She was the only girl who could turn me on by singing the Mickey Mouse song.
The song was from the Jack Webb film, Pete Kelly's Blues and it was sung by Ella Fitzgerald. But for some inexplicable reason, it was edited out of the finished movie. Ella Fitzgerald released it as a single first, but it was Julie London who made it her signature song. Back in the late1970's Crystal gayle also recorded a superb cover version.
Attention Diana Krall , Michael Buble and Susan Boyle: This is why you should never, ever touch the signature song of another singer. It only invites comparison - in a negative way!
You can have all these modern "divas," I'll take Julie London every time. BTW, if you ever inspire a woman to make those sounds, you're probably a jackass.
This is the song we used to play in the London jazz clubs back in 1983-84. More or less started her career off. Based herself around the old jazz singers now she is one:) Cheers Paul Cooke - Sade Drummer
None of the standard walling, shouting, illterate search for a note crap we see nowadays....she hits everything in full stride and smokes it like the star she was.
She gets more into the effort than the wannabe's of the current ilk and hardly sings above a talking level.
The year that this song come out my Mother was completely done with my Step-Father whom was a ladies man. She left it playing on the turntable when she walk out and never returned! Thank you Julie!
Diana Krall tries so hard to sound like her, she is nowhere close. June Cristy was another great singer. Bobby Troup wrote a song for his wife Jule entitled
"Juile is her name" and Rene Touzet did a latin style version of it. Terrific.
I love Julie and always have. 1. because I'm a Julie. 2. because my dad used to play her records on the stereo and 3. I wanted to be Nurse Dixie McCall on Emergency! This is such and awesome song.
@Cutiemode I don't know the exact year but it is probably 1964/1965 so she would have been late 30's (ideal for me right now - why can't I meet someone like her!)
Terrific performer, and overwhelmingly sexy --
