  • My teacher

  • I'm a fail at this

  • what is the name of this song? like in te 0:39 of the video?? I really want to know!!!

  • @66sWIFEY4LYPH um no they dont cuz it they do they are going to fall thats why you put it apart

  • yee thanks!!

  • their legs need to go closer together

  • You guys are really good for beginners. Its kind of obvious you guys are beginners though! But great job you guys :)

  • OMV what r those boys doing?! lolz Do they not kno that boys doin fa'a rapu, they pa'oti?! lolz So cute!!! LOVEz iT!!!

  • did you say "Aloha welcome to tahiti?" I think its Yorana" hehehe cute though

  • I think the girls should have mentioned the knees. In Tahitian dance you don't really move your hips, you move your knees, then you hips follows with the movements.

But, yeah, liked the video ^^

  • Hey Tracy can you do another video on teaching each each girl move specifically pls & thxs great job btw (:

  • It was a high school project that, obviously, Tracy taught to her classmates just to get the project done. Never once did they say they were actual dancers. Those of you who are in the video...GREAT JOB!!

YES I am an Islander and YES I am tahitian!

For all those who had anything negative to say obviously don't know how to dance tahitian. The ones that do know how to dance are simply forgetting where they came from and should be ashamed of yourselves. Show pride of MY CULTURE the right way!

  • this is a great video u guys just hatin cus u can dance like they can soooooooo all u haters just hop off ........we dont see u on here teachin ppl to dance like this :) i agree they all are great

  • this was cute....the girl with the red sarong....love your farapu....preety cool video for a high school project.....so most of you are proab. almost out of college now....thanks for sharing

  • i really like this!

  • you know what, i really don't mean to be rude, but you guys really need to learn how to do Tahitian dancing correctly before you teach it! I've been dancing Polynesian dance for almost twelve years now, and i really don't appreciate it when other people mess with the dance and do it incorrectly.

  • very bad.

  • i have wanted to learn how to do that ever since i have seen it and now i kno who to do it and i think i might practice a little bit and post a video in about 3 weeks(: loved the video!!

  • Where to begin...I learned how to do tahitian dance from a group called Nonosina. And they are a pro group. So their movements are right. I hate to break it to you, but this isn't right. Not even close. Feet should be close together, arms shouldn't be bent. All I have to say pretty much, is please learn before you teach the dance. You don't want people to learn it wrong. Don't take this as me being mean. I'm just a dancer who hates to see people do my type of dance wrong.

  • @xco0ki3sXcr3amx

Thanks for your critique. You may not have seen that this was just a simple high school project in which the one dancer, who had training such as yours, taught the others who then spent one day making a video on the beach.

Under these circumstances, can we maybe cut these teenagers a little bit of slack? I'm a longtime reggae and calypso musician. I learned a long time ago to just allow others to love playing the music, while respecting the tradition.

  • @xco0ki3sXcr3amx I understand what ur coming from but u have to take in consideration that every halau teaches differently;) just my opinion...

  • @xco0ki3sXcr3amx We live in a diversity culture so stop being mean...I thought they are so good because they amuse me that is opposite to your comment.Thank you and have a nice day.

  • i love the idea you guys did for this and it was fun learning this thanks

  • tru dat

  • the girls on the sides arent as good as the girl in the middle... Boys SHAKE WHAT YOO MAMA GAVE YA,

  • wow, only the girl in the red is good.

  • @bubblezcrazy123

That's a rather bizarre statement. These are bright, precocious high school students; all of them are now in college and one has returned to her native Croatia. They, along with myself, had an incredibly fun time doing this high school class project.

They are ALL good because they are our youth, our bright future, are full of energy, smiles and love for each other. This exercise brought them all into much greater appreciation of the rich culture of Polynesia and Tahiti.

  • @keidiobiawadu Ya, but really she was the only one who was skilled at the dance which was the point of the comment.. i doubt they were questioning the brightness of the others

  • Such a positive thing to see. Whether they had the right terms/names or not, it's a group of young people doing a good thing. Way to go!!!

  • I think they was ok but the pnly person that was awesome was the lady in the Sorange red um i think its TRACY shes the best of all of them!!

  • Do you guys know the name of the song that they used?

  • so great- I am going to practice this- you have inspired me! Thanks Guys! (the girl talking was doing such an excellent job of instruction and dance)

  • it's cool what you tried to do with this video, the idea is great, but I think all of you should learn the right way to do the movements and their real names before making an instructional video. When is not your culture you should try to learn more about it before trying to teach it to others.

  • Actually, this was a high school class project and it was aimed at their fellow students. We pushed it up on YouTube to share the memory of the afternoon with their peers. It was more fun than a serious cultural documentary. The young people had a blast doing the shoot and now have something to share after they have all gone off to college.

Can't we give em a break and just enjoy them being high school students?

Oh, and they got a great grade also.

  • naww nyce tah cee ya'll learning tahitian, Maya don't move your upper body, and Iaorana is how you say hello in tahitian =)

  • hey maya.. your shoulders are not supposed to move!!!

  • i want to learn this type of dance too...

  • Im so happy to see people learn my culture...but there is some clearances that need to be made other than that u guys are awesome...i teach a group of 200 dancers i teach at USC, UCLA, UCSB, and other polynesian clubs. u guys r great!!!

  • That is so beautiful. You just radiate love with your words. I bet your students are so grateful to be with you.

  • I love to see people of other cultures learn mine because it is a gift that not everyone can accomplish and to see those young adults accomplish that was an excitement!!! If you guys would like info on my seminars on dancing and drumming just message me!!!

    Manuia I Ka Kite!!!!

  • hehe.. kool video.

  • very nice video.

  • Katarina is sooo bad at this xD Tracy was hella good . Jay was funny dancing [X

  • thanks a lot sweet peoples....chokran

  • I dance tahitian. this is a good video. I also grew up in redondo beach. good job

  • can black people do this dance 2 ? i would really love 2 learn how to do this dance !

  • @babyface090 Race has nothing to do with this;P Everyone can learn and do this, as long as u practice, and have the love and understanding for the culture;)

  • ooh wow, i met that girl in thee red sarong. shes such a cutie and totally adorable.

  • hahah omg this is sooo embarassing. hehe i never realized how funny jay was doin all the girl moves. LOL good times. -tracy

  • wow this video has a lot of views. AHHAHA FCKIN JAY. tracy is a fckin proooooo.

  • you guys were great you should make some teaching videos that helped me out alot !!!

  • girl withy red stands out a lot but she can danc every well.

  • Ct nul la dance tahitien pour les mecs c pas sa nulllll!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it's tracy and jay!!!. . . ha ha i remember this dance and i still have my sarong too! lol

  • Great to hear from you. I hope you are doing great at college. You were so much fun to work with.

  • What great young people. Beautiful, enthusiastic and positive! All the traits the world needs. Thank you guys!

  • holy smoke the duck walk thing is so hard. lmbo.

  • lol they should say " Iorana" (i dont even know if i spelled it right) lol anyways isnt the box called afata? and the firgure eight suppose to be call Varu? mmm and yes it is called a pareo.

  • its easier for people to identify if they say box and figure eight...i know these ppl lol and when they teach the class it is so much easier for the beginners to remember the moves :D

  • yeah they shoulda said ioarana not aloha if they had been doin hula it woulda been ok but this is tahitian.. and youre right about all else

  • I thought it was called pareo?

  • Excellent job guys!

  • I have belly danced for several years but recently got into tahitian I really love it. You guys do a good job on this video for explaining and dancing. thanks. I also grew up in Redondo.

  • Dis song is called E vahine maohi E {remix} n rockst14 do you have this music or know someone who has this music the remix form,

  • what is the song called? i did this for my tahitian practice at my highschool

  • can someone please tell me how to get this remix song in the mainland

  • lol.......wat is a "faraku" in tahitian dance?!

anyways.......i guess the vid waz a pretty good vid for a high school proj + a tutorial for BEGINNERS of this diverse culture....

  • cool!

  • !WOW!tHE dUCk WALk iS HARd!

  • lol, "Aloha"

  • I love this video; it breaks down about every Tahitian dance move, so it is easy for beginners to learn. mahalo.

  • They made one mistake. Aloha is Hawaiian, not tahitian. You say "Iaorana", silly ppl.

  • okay so Tracy is the only one that can dance hula.

annnd, their shoulders keep moving, the song they dance to is a wierd remix of the original. In my halau we use that song for tahitian warmups but there's more drums and its more traditional.

  • Ok 10-12 years ago before Carlos and Maire came to the Mainland "California" . Most teachers were using Ame, Box, and Duck Walk. So they are not completely wrong. Tevahine Mariteragi and Roiti De Silva used that terminology back then in the days. So to say that they are wrong is not correct. So be nice because this is school project. Think objective and understand that they are doing a class project. For the afata they can reverse direction if they want too. Great job on your homework.

  • Ok I take back my last comment. I didn't know this to be a class project. Regardless of the technicalities about the name of the dance moves. I would say that you guys did a good job for a class project. So I will defend you about the terminology of Ame. First of Faarapu wasn't really introduced into California till about 10-12 years ago. When Maire and Carlos came her to visit to show thier moves and Oro. Before then. I will explain more on the second comment

  • ok..They know the basics but should not be instructing others when they still need to improve their techniques. Hand posture is wrong the female dancers are better than the men. The men are weak on the hands and should take more lessons. I would suggest going to a Tahitian Group for 5 more years before even trying to creat an instructional video.

  • This is actually a high school class project. It was done with just a few days of instruction and filmed in one afternoon. I think that the Tahitian dance purists have taken far too harsh tones in their criticism/castigation. One of the students was from Serbia and returned to her home country after one year of study in California. I am proud of these beautiful young people and was honored to have assisted them.

  • If you look at my later comments I have changed my criticism. Grats on your school project.

  • Isn't the ami a hula move? & in tahitian you don't put your feet 2 inches apart, your feet are always close together.

Good project though. I've only been dancing for 2 years. I'm not a pro, but I was jus saying. =]

  • Where you put your feet in tahitian is a matter of personal preference. I have taken instruction with a few teachers over twelve years and they say different things. In competition though you put your feet together.

  • thank you for saying this! Many people always bash other vahine dancers if their feet are a little bit apart...Mauruuru

  • i'm sorry, just one more thing. Just in case you continue to teach this to others who desire to learn, the step you used to move back with one heel up and one foot flat is called the "faatere". mauruuru roa!

  • whats a 'faraku'.........is it supposed to be Fa'arapu?............skirts called PAREO......there are more dancec steps for the girls & guys.....& more ways to tie a pareo.......GOOD proj., BUT PLEASE do Tahitian dance CORRECTLY/TRADITIONALLY FOLLOWING THE CULTURE & RESEARCH MORE ON IT....guys do not have to puttheir hands in a fist.....tahitians do not say ALOHa!....they say IA ORANA!

-just sayin' some tips...(not to cause any offense!)

  • oh and i dont think ill ever be able to do the duck walk its killer on my knees haha.

  • I heard that! Me too! :P

  • I have been doing tahitian for two years (dad in millitary, stationed in hawaii and our school teaches it for Mayday)i absolutly enjoy it and i still cant tie the pareu right lol. and the "flower step" is called a tiare. although i might have spelt it wrong. but good job you guys.

  • Thank you very much for the post! You exactly have no idea how much I appreciate it. Anyway, could I ask you what's the title of the music you used? Please pm me. I need it badly.

  • my group has a routine to this song as well, the song title is "vahine maohi" by FENUA. It means "native woman" Also, please see the comments below by other Tahitian dance lovers re. Tahitian terms. Mauruuru!

  • Go CAMS

  • i gotta say also..

when you do the fa'arapu... never.. NEVER move your body up and down.

you teach your students to move their hips

with NO up and down motion.

your hips should be the only movement, otherwise your shoulder.

anyways, i was amused by this video (:

i like seeing mainlanders attempting to learn the dancing of the pacific.

it's great. -- not meant to be in ANY offensive way.

  • my sentiments exactly. also, just for future reference, thank you in tahitian is mauruuru. it's a cute video and i'm happy to see that tahitian dance is a passion for so many people. one more thing, there are 2 varu's: the one in your video is the varu mua. the other is varu tairi. the tahitian term for duck walk is tefene (sp?). thanks to you as well, HANSLO107. hope you folks got an A on your project!

  • "it was cute... but this is tahitian.... instead of aloha you say ia orana.... and instead of ami.... it is called faarapu.... the sarong is thai.... tahitian we call it pareu....the figure eight is valu.... and side to side is called a bumps or tahiti tamau......good job though....."

true. took the words out of my mouth.

  • Very good, but some details 4U:

    right/back/left/foward: AFATA

    8: VARU not valu

    But U R right 4 the AMI, that's good.

And in tahitian we say FA'ARAPU not FARAKU.

One last thing for u girlz: try to keep ur feet as closed as possible.

    But indeed, good job

  • it was cute... but this is tahitian.... instead of aloha you say ia orana.... and instead of ami.... it is called faarapu.... the sarong is thai.... tahitian we call it pareu....the figure eight is valu.... and side to side is called a bumps or tahiti tamau......good job though.....

  • i thought the sarongs were called pareos and figure eights were varu... :P

  • Iorana!

    Too cute! Good job!!!

  • School project? Good job in trying to teach a dance in only ten mins. It's hard to teach a dance to mainlanders, especially when the dance moves are in a different language. Just a couple corrections. Iorana is the correct greeting of Tahiti. The Fa'arapu is a females move and should not be done by men. Neither is that first step of the dance. We call it the "flower step". Other than that I give you big credits and I think your a pretty good dancer.

  • Well just one question...theres is a move that the tanes do with their hips that looks alot like the farapu, so I dont think it was that wrong. And there are male bellydancer, so I bet there are male tane dancers that do vahine dances! I have seen a video of a male tahitian dance instructor that was teaching a vahine, and they did a mini tamure, and he was great!

  • wow..... :D <3

the girl with the red one cloth..

this video is so helpful n beautiful too!!

    wow.. xD !!

  • the name of the song is:

    Vahine Maohi E by Fenua

  • uhmm, that is all wrong.

well, some of it is wrong. juss saying.

good work doh. i would be too lazy to make one of videos where you teach tahitian/hula. lol:D

  • nice video. but feet are supposed to be together for the vahine's. in the form of a v.

  • This video always makes me smile. I will remember these moments forever and how much fun we had making it, and I brought that great memory with me back home.

The year spent in the U.S. has been an amazing one. This video is just one of the experiences that made it so much fun.

    xxx

  • Katarina - You are such a lovely young lady. Please tell all your friends in Serbia that the students you met at CAMS were special also. We wish you a great and productive life and look forward to welcoming you to California in the future. Bless you, Sweetheart...Maya's Daddy-O

  • Hello, thank you, thank you soo much. Please don't pay attention to critics, try to avoid that "persons". Congratulations ! And could you tell me please what is the name of the song you are teaching please. And if you could tell me the name of the Album and artist to get it and practice.

    Bless

  • why do we say ALOHA! and then "welcome to Tahiti?" dont you want to say " La Oranna!" and then "Maeva i Tahitti!" but anyway... cool dancing!

  • Oh and let me add that the boys looked ridiculous doing the same movements in the beginning of the routine as the girls. The only movement that a boy and girl share in Tahitian dancing is the ami. "The basic" is called a paoti and the "kick" is called a tue. I hope that people don't watch this and find it informative because it is all wrong!

  • i totally agree with you.

  • Considering this was a school project it should have been done with a lot more research. Iaorana is the greeting in Tahiti not "Aloha" A fast ami is called a fa'arapu not "faraku" Also an ami is done with the feet together and absolutely no upper body movement. A "figure 8" is called a varu. A "box" is called an afata. A "duck walk" is called an menetere. When someone is taught basics they should be taught the actual language of Tahiti and it's meaning.

  • i know, i didnt realize that you said some of the things i said. yes it is a fa'arapu, i did giggle at the "Faraku"... oh well, school project. but i agree, give correct information. but hey, they tried. yes, they should be taught the actual languange.

  • I agree with you 100%

  • I agree with you too! And to let you know it's correctly spelt umi.

  • I'm from tahiti and I think that you missed something for the guys: everything!

The guys are supposed to dance what we call paoti or ori tahiti...

    But good video....

  • fatapou that one i still cant get. idk how ur sposd 2 get ur hips 2 do that. if only they showed her legs while she was doing it..any tips ?

  • iaorana iorana (8) lol, i want that song!!

  • you can get it at calabash music (dot) com for 99cents or just ....hmmm... i really dont know. i've had the song for so long that i cant remember where i got it. it doesnt get old i'd tell you that. check TeVaka's website, they might have links

  • ook, thaanks!! i'll ask my teacher, she could have it (:

  • I am even more impressed that it was a school production! WOW! You should start a regular show here, I bet you will have a lot of subcribers because there is no one else that has an instructional video as good as yours. You could teach a new move every week. You could get extra credit! lol ;)

  • This is actually a really well done video. People don't understand how hard it is to edit to keep people interested. I watched from beginning to end and was suprised how professional and well spoken they were. You should make more videos, but I would work a little more on the group choreography first. The bak up girls are still struggling with some of the moves. But good work though!!

  • Thank you for your kind words about the production. I think it has been explained that this was just a quick high school production so the choreography is just what it is. But it was so much fun being with them.

  • every girl that did it (except for the asian girl, tracy) put their legs far apart and the white girl told them to. its SUPPOSED to be together!

  • you aren't suppossed to bounce...the asian girl didn't bounce but the other 2 did.

  • can anyone tell me what the music was? really loved it!

  • they should do a little bit more research about dancing tahitian. teaching the wrong thing can start a chain of mistakes. i should know coz i've been dancing tahitian for 8 years. but i give props to the asian.

  • I think this is a cool and professional video, the editing and teaching demonstrations are clear, although not all dance professionally, they are not professionals and this is non-profit...I think I learned about more moves from this than from my workout DVD :)

  • I am a bit surprised at the bitterness of some of the comments. These are high school students working on a class project, oly one of which has any formal training. They are doing it for fun and for a grade. Their teacher was wonderfully impressed. Traditional Tahitian dance is a serious art and beautiful in its purity. But this is just some young people having fun. Some of the critical comments have bordered on cruelty. Lighten up, people. Let our youth have fun.

  • oh yeah and why the hell are the guys doing the girls tahitian?

  • are you freak'n serious.. what are the two girls is the black and purple doing.. when did tahitian start being done with the feet open and legs spread.. and when did aloha become the word to say hello in tahiti.. you should really be careful about teaching a traditional culture.. represent it correctly and learn how to actually do the dance. people will follow what you've done and have the wrong concept of tahitian.

  • Go CAMS WOOT!! WOOT!!

  • thanks so much! this video really does help!

  • its alright but I think the asian girl knows what shes doing. and the ami your feet are supposed to be closed. and the varu; also known as the figure 8 you shouldn't be moving your shoulders, but props to the guys and the girl in the red pareo

  • the ami is the hula dance...fatapou (dunno how to spell it) is how it is in the tahitain dance...but yea ur feet are suppossed to be closed.

  • i think you guys need to find a male choreographer for the guys, and tune up your basics... correctly

  • there are some basic moves still missing..

  • last time i checked, hello in tahiti was iorana!!!

  • yea datz wut i thought 2... lol

  • cool video but i think the chinese girl and two boys know wat there sorta doin

  • Well, I don't think she's chinese...But I bet you don't care...

  • I am sorry to say but you guys really need to make sure you are providing and demonstrating the right info. One of your girls was doing the ami the wrong way and the figure 8 too. Also the side to side motion is called a fati....the farapu is not a fast ami, its the tahitian style ami which from the back looks kind of jerky. Good Luck!

  • oh yea, you guys aren't that good yet.

  • Really good your video thank you.Now i do know the basic.Thanksssssss really. With what you show i'll try to find a web to learn more.

  • i love this song! we use it to warm up for tahitian!

  • what is the song called?

  • Nice choreography!

  • Thank you for making this video for us.We couldn't have done it without your help. We had SO much fun that day, I would do it again anytime :]

    Katarina

  • Working with this group of young people was just a complete thrill. I look forward to hearing from you and your friends as to your opinion of how the project turned out. I did have to edit a few extra minutes out of the YouTube version.
