I love Cory Booker. This man is a genius. If he can manage this turn around in Newark, he will have successfully accomplished something no American mayor has yet done, economically revitalize a mostly lower income African American post industrial city. Mr. Booker, if you want to make Newark safer, how about working on easing/removing gun control laws and legalizing all drugs? Guns laws only disarm law abiding citizens and leave them defenseless against criminals who don't care about gun laws and will still carry a gun.

The biggest reason Newark has many criminals in the first place is because many of them are in the illegal drug business. Legalized drugs would force them to look for a REAL job.

And NO, I don't do drugs.

I have no comment on guns--Don't believe hand guns should be in anyone's hands-Founding "Fathers were concerned w/ single shot viewable muskets but thats not my concern.

Your point on legalizing drugs is accurate--Legalize and control the venue where they can be acquired and crime virtually disappears.

However so do the governments unreported income.

As for finding real work...not sure about that part of the scenario.

@jortizz - Even if a majority of people in Newark agreed with your plan (and maybe they do; I don't know of any polls on the question), federal drug control policy makes it practically impossible for any one city to legalize all drugs.

Until the federal policy changes, cities will need to find other solutions to their problems. Mayor Booker is making the right choice by not waiting around for some radical change from outside to resolve the situation in Newark.
