  • Proof that the 15th Alabama was weak : )

  • As a descendant of Joshua Chamberlain i think he was one of if not the best officer and leader an enlisted man could follow with honor and pride

  • Man, there are as many people here claiming to be descendants of Chamberlain as there are people claiming to have been in Yankee Stadium in 1961 when Roger Maris hit his 61st home run hahahaha. The funny thing, though, is that all the people here claiming to be Chamberlain's relative can't spell, and yet Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was an intellectual scholar who spoke and wrote 9 languages mostly fluently. His succeeding generations have really let him down ROFL

  • There were many great leaders of men in the Civil War between the States, Joshua L. Chamberlain followed his orders to not surrender that position. He did not fail on that, because if he had,the battle and the war would have been lost.

  • When I was in Gettysburg a couple days ago, I actually laid down on he rock that you see behind his shoulder at 0:18 and stared out at the battlefield. Kinda creepy to see it on a movie...

  • wounded 6 times in the war

  • I was named after Chamberlain!

  • Doesn't really sound realistic to me.

  • I'm not a beleiving man, but this event, remembered and written down 50 years later in a letter, is truly remarkable. It was really worth hearing.

  • A small hero from an unexpected place. A man doesn't know why sometimes, but he doesn't question it either. We all have our moments of judgement.

  • This confirms my belief in God and angels. The event echoes one in the Revolutionary war, when Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Ferguson refused to kill an American officer in an ambush. The officer was likely none other than Washington. What, other than divine intervention, can explain the sudden displays of mercy.

  • JASHUA CHAMBLAIN IS MY RELITIVE HE IS MY FAMILY god bless america

  • @peterpan5031 Other military leaders usually get all the glory and attention regarding the Civil War... Grant and Lee, to name but a few. But Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was a leader amongst men, who fought with them, who snatched victory out of the jaws of defeat. He was a warrior and a scholar, whose college tried to keep out of the war - he was so appreciated there. I do not see how the Union could have won in Gettysburg without him. And he knew compassion. A great man, and a patriot.

  • @Florhusband what does that tell me i already know that i cant baleive he's in my family though

  • @peterpan5031 I guess you knew. Should have made clearer that those were some reasons why I admire him.

  • @Florhusband why would you even say that if you knew i knew that

  • @Florhusband

The Union wouldnt have won if he didnt make the orders that he did there on Little Round Top. First, refusing his line to counter a flank. Then to order the bayonet charge when most of his men we either low or completely out of ammo. He knew that if they were to retreat the Confederate Army would have flanked the whole Union Army and would have destroyed the rest of the army. Then Lee would have had a clear road to Washington.

  • Also for the soldier who could have taken the shot to kill Chamberlain would have won the war for the Confederates. With Chamberlain down the 20th Maine probably would have been ordered to retreat and the Union flanks would have fallen

  • @mptrunner He was wounded many times.

  • @LordHannigan i believe it was 6-7 times.

  • @mptrunner youre assuming too much. in the heat of battle incredible things can happen for better or worse. and youd be surprized who would stand up and take command in the heat of battle to avoid disaster. thats what makes men heros even if they dont think they are heros out of modesty. at picketts charge capt cushing 4th wis batt. d was killed all officers were wounded the first seargent took command of the battery won the medal of honor. just one example of what could happen.

  • @Florhusband You may be absolutely right. Sometimes history hinges on having just the right person at the right time, in unlikely circumstances. That Joshua Chamberlain was able to turn almost certain defeat into a complete rout of his enemy speaks volumes of him as a military man and a leader. I've never served in the military, but if I ever did, I'd like to be under the command of such an officer as Chamberlain.

  • I am a diresct decendant to this man. Pretty cool!

  • This is awesome man!

  • Amazing.

  • Yes, I knew about the Reb that could not pull the trigger. What a fateful event in our nations history! What an absolutely incredible person in Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain!

  • I'm a buff and this is the first I've ever heard of it...wow.

  • @BeachBoysJanDean1 actually i think the southerner and chamberlain are both great, to be in that fierce battle u must of have been able to shoot any maine guy u saw coming up the hill, for him not to shoot chamberlain shows alot everywhere. u know?
