I've been into DT since Images came out but I never really got into Fates Warning. Most of my musician friends are VERY into both bands. I'd really like to introduce myself to some FW. Can anyone tell me a good place to start? I hear that "pleasant shade of gray" is one of their best.
To bad Ray..should have used better judgement while you we're smoking it up including the pooch..now your voice is only second best without your high pitch,no more singing: "Silent Crys"....makes everyone depressed....but your still the best in our books...God bless...peace
Hey lads, I had to like most of your comments. You were all right, but not a word about Jim's genius!!!! I love FW and respect all the members, but in my humble opinion Jim is the heart and the mastermind of this great band.
you right on that one Mike Portnoy is still working on old style drumming,he never made any changes to his playing style since the: "Images and Words" album...to tell you the truth all of DT's albums are great but only a few great songs came out of them all...It's the same tunes collected from previous albums...sorry DT fans but it made them boring...
@chaimpo Portnoy doesn't lack creativity, just Mark Zonder is more creative. Portnoy is technically flawless though. He can play anything. Zonder comes up with all the most incredible and original rhythms though.
@j800r Hmmm... heard of the album Metropolis pt.II: Scenes from a memory? Are those drumparts also lacking creativity?
I think both drummers are superb at creating creative drumparts. But you have to remember that Portnoy is just filling in for the show. And next to that I still think that Nick D'Virgilio did was the best session-drummer (at that time he still was) has had...
@j800r yeah i read you man. I'm just saying that Portnoy is creative in a different way. Don't think that you can say that Mark is more creative that Mike or the other way around. And besides, he's acting as a session drummer, which means he's had little time to really practice all the songs through and through...
@Ieronymous You absolutely have no idea what the hell you are talking about period....Zonder has always said he thinks Portnoy is the most creative drummer in history. Portnoy said he performed with Fates not to replace or do something different than Zonder, but to pay tribute...Get your facts straight before spouting off!
I love Fates Warning. I love Portnoy's playing with DT, but his style doesn't fit with FW. I miss Mark. Whether FW wants to admit it or not they miss him too.
His style doesn't fit? The drumming that he does on this song is perfect. He isn't "overplaying" as a hell of a lot of people tell me or "showing off" as others say. He is playing for the song...sorry his style is fine..sorry I have to disagree with you.
personally, I prefer Mark's Single Bass Drum fills and patterns to this song, but Mike's is another perspective. It really depends on how you feel about the song appart from the drum.
Fuck- Portnoy is hitting Zonders parts very well !!!
The "Athens" ging with D' Virgilio was so fucking lame and out of the original drum track.
VelvetViolator 4 months ago
@VelvetViolator I think D'Virgilio did a great job, he has a warmer sound, but that's just my opinion...

@ezurcher1 Start with some early stuff like the song Anarchy Divine. Then work your way up. Everything from "Disconnected" is great, too.

@jackmarsilva actually, it was a conscious choice he made to not squeal into the mic. he wanted to focus more on the melody.

Amen Toxi Labrie sounds like fuking Styx!

Portnoy "Executes" while Zonder "Creates" thats why Mark Zonder will always be superior to Portnoy...Plain and simple...!!!

Mike Portnoy and Makr Zonder are both excellent drummers but nobody can fill Mark Zonder's shoes.

@Burn0ut0nline. More than right. Nick D´Virgilio was the worst drummer I´ve ever seen in the FW team. Very bad...
