Very nice to see Dr. Yang perform White Crane! I don't know too much about it, other than when I was in Taiwan in 93, I saw this style of White Crane being performed in New Taibei Park. I've never seen it since other than Dr. Yang's. He's an incredible teacher and a great guy! I love his videos and books!
Dr. Yang is one of those old farts that is, more than likely, damn near unbeatable and indestructible. The guy has been doing Kung Fu long enough that he no longer needs to look good to be effective. Very little effort and he gets big boom power. I've met a few of these guys, usually in their sixties, and very dangerous. I believe the last one I met told me "look at you, you have very big muscle, I can no fight you, you beat me every time, I no fight you but I very easy to kill you".
Ruud, the thing is, you do indeed need to have achieved some level of mastery in order to have a basis for criticism. Have some respect; irreverence doesn't impress anyone. If I were as accomplished as Dr. Yang, I would perhaps be above this argument, but I'm not, so, on behalf of serious martial artists everywhere, I happily remind you to check yourself.
ruud born in '77 feels comfortable criticizing Dr. Yang's form. Those of us who care about the martial arts don't like to see important teachers criticized by fools who use the anonymity of the Internet to give expression to their silly righteousness, misleading impressionable young martial artists who might not know any better than to listen to you.
Sun lu tang talked about this also. If you practice the five elements wrong you create "angry chi". let's face it, breath goes up you're top heavy and so !!not rooted!! same for holding the breath. That is why i wont beginners to cool down, they do so many things the wrong way inside.
yeah so, he lost his footing ... do we all not strive to find out we are not perfect? sure. and none of us are. However , he is a living legend in the martial arts community, and for a reason. The hand strikes were right on. yes, he ended somewhat abruptly, although he appeared to still be "in the moment" of realizing his chi. btw , a "farmboy" wouldn't stand a fat chance against this man. period.
What does that mean "he is a living legend in the martial arts community" to whom. Not to me. I mean what is your background? How many masters have you seen, to base your judgement on. Respect in the martial arts community shouldn't become brainless following of those with the biggest school and the most video's.
Cool. Its hard to tell if someone is going to get irate about this stuff. By the way,I checked out some of your video's, pretty cool stuff. Any of it you?
Calm down my friend.... Master Yang Jwing Ming has one of the biggest martial art school and there is an objective reason. For all his students at least (including me), he is a living legend. I base my judgement on 20 years of practice and I have had 3 previous masters before him.
Ruud1977 I think you are probably not a real martial artist true inner strength can only be cultivated by those who do away with ignorant and egotistical thinking. I don't care what you see when you look at the form of my Sifu but what you do not see is the lesson is you must learn. Master Yang is the foremost experts on the art of Ancestor White Crane. As for a cooling off or warming up period I've never crossed fists with an opponent who let me warm up or cool off. White Crane is combat.
If respect is blind following without questioning, no thanks. anonymity? Show me your video's then. If posting 1 simple critic about why he moves that way, Gets 5 people to react in this way. My kungfu must be very good.Does it automaticly mean disrespect to a sifu to question something?? White crane is not combat its an art. you guys are probably all good martial artists but lose your temper easily. And this is only digital...
When we think too highly of our own opinions, we can end up saying too much about things that we know very little about.
When we are young, we may delude ourselves into thinking that we know exactly how things ought to be and that everyone needs to hear about it, but luckily, these mistakes are easily forgotten.
This is a good discussion covering different points of view...for the record this Southern White Crane form, like most of them from this particular system, don't have a formal ending it is just stops with the final move... unlike northern long fist..as for the criticizing of his form this man is a true scholar of chinese martial arts..and respect is due. it is art, not fight, that makes the artist, fight is a byproduct of the path, not the goal of a artist. Peace
Yeah, some of them just stop. I took Shaolin-do for about 11 years and some of those animal forms end in similar fashion. Most of my Shaolin Kempo forms have a more formal ending though.
A form moves around the energy in a particular way. if I practice xingyi i never end without a proper cooldown qigong. you just feel it if you dont. Our sipak told that from the moment your out of breath by doing your form, rest and let the qi sink.
I think thats true for every aspect of the arts. Letting the qi sink and ground you. beginners doing the "wrong" things inside is part of the journey. it is to be enjoyed by all.
sloppy footwork!! and balance. the ending is so abrupt that it feels like he forgot the form. I mean i like some of his books but to see him perform is dissapointing. and you dont need to be a master to see that
yeah I had noticed that but if you think you're good, go and ask him for a fight. If you don' tthink you're good then get good and go ask him for a fight.
you can't always be at the top of things when you're 60. Master Li too lost balance in his tantui performance, yet you can see it doesn't really change how good he was and is.
you're right of course in that age it becomes harder to perform fast. the question is why do it then, if it destroys your body. if you understand the flow of energy in a life time you should quiet your training in that age. i've seen older people than him, with much better root. i mean they write about qi and pre heaven and post heaven but where is the understanding if you can even listen to your own body.
I haven't said that he is not good at what he does. I merely suggest that i find a disbalance between the books and the actual seeing of his performance. and i only reacted on one of his videos. Why do all you so called "followers" of this man have such a hard time dealing with a simple comment. Blind following is bad my friend, it will stop your growth. And since i don't know you nor saw your skills i'm not gonna tell you you don't have them.
@ruud1977 Ah that's cool man, it's just something he doesn't practice. This form isn't even pure white crane it's a hybrid. You should just check out his Taiji forms and push hands work for some real quality. Doing a pre-set form like that is like singing a song, and if you havent sung it for years, and you're trying to keep a tempo..well
it was created by a white crane master. It's supposed to be a little mix of tiger claws and white crane. Also supposed to be train by big bellied people.
