This song as well as Walk of Life from the same album have got to be the in the best category of live songs in the history of space and time Couple these with Little Feats Waiting for Columbus and Doobies Wolf Trap albums and you have head bursting appreciation
You know how sometimes when you hear a band on the radio and own their records, when you see a live performance they sound really dull and un-together? The Straights are not one of those bands.
This record and tour gave in to the worst of Knopfler's self-indulgent area rock mentality. Should have stuck with the small soulful combo attitude that gave us 'Six Blade Knife' and the like. Calling Elvis indeed. Fat 70s Elvis who didn't take himself seriously much less his music. Quite simply, this sucked.
I get shivers down my spine listening to this awesomeness. Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists. This is real music people. Much better than the commercial garbage you hear nowadays from pseudo-artists (*cough*bieber*cough*)
Isn't this from Dire Straits 'On the Night', i remember recording this on vhs back in '89 i think, still have the vhs cassette somewhere! This was their opening song wasn't it?
How do you know true talent when you hear it? When the artists sound way better live than they do in the studio, that's how. Intense. One of Knopfler's best. Should've done a few more "jam band" style tunes like this one.
Knopfler wasn't just a virtuoso on guitar. He was also orchestrating. That's why his head always seemed to be on a swivel.
Imagine an orchestra in which the lead violinist was also the conductor, and you'll get the idea.
From 6:20 to 7:20 my computer was on fire and later extinguished by Knopflers`cool attitude and smooth guitar. The percussionist reminds me of Michael Shrieve (Santana`s drummer) Woodstock 69` festival .
Look at how MK mesmerizes the crowd. A little solo riff here, a little solo riff here, lots of percussion, and the guitars always present or not too far in the shadows. Absolutely outstanding.
Saw this band in late 80's at Melb tennis center, absolutely awesome, started gig with this track and what a cracker......... just wonderin if others here saw and melt
I love Dire Straits beacuse they play the real Rock`n Roll. When listening to the song When it comes to you, you feel like you're on a highway, sitting next to you your girlfriend, a liter of whiskey.....thats the real life
an almost hypnotic performance. Excellent. First saw Dire Straits at the Hammersmith Odeon when Alchemy was released, one of the finest bands ever not like the crap of today.
Great Rock with mix of R&B is just amazing. I can just equate Dirty Diana of MJ of such Quality. Mark Knofler, david Gulmour were just two uncomparable legends of 70s and 80s

@TheMUSEism Sounds dorian to me. It has the minor 3rd, methinks. I would be surprised if he mwiggleed some major. He does a lot of minor pentatonic, before he starts addign teh extra notes for dorian, though.

@TheMUSEism Don't know about this one, but in 1980, he used Schecter Stratocaster-style guitars to record Making Movies. Mark owned many Schecter guitars, including a Candy Apple Red. This was his main guitar for live and studio use until 1987. In 2004 one of his Schecters, a Strat with a tobacco sunburst finish, was sold at an auction for over $50,000, the highest amount ever paid for a Schecter.
