This is Sunnyside. The buildings shown in the start are my childhood neighborhood. The Kaiser Dormitory was called "the green hornet. The church next to it still stands as does my fathers two houses all else is gone. The mine and tipple area has been reclaimed. My father is still there also,95 years young. Additional comment...The balanced rock formation is near Moab, Utah in the Arches National Monumnent Park and not in Castle Gate. Castle Gate is 4 miles north of Helper, and not between Helper and Price, Utah.
Castle Gate is named for the large vertical rock formation on the north side of Castle Gate. There is still a flag pole on the top edge of the "gate". I would estimate the "gate" is 250 ft. tall and is a shear face.
The balance rock formation is in Helper, and also in Moab, Castle Gate was up the road from Helper. Trust me, Ive lived in Helper since I was 3 years old.
I grew up in Castle Gate, Utah and lived there from 1938 until 1950. The pictures I see seem to be from the East Carbon area near Dragerton or Sunnyside, Utah. Kaiser had mining facilities in Sunnyside with the coke ovens shown.
John, this coal mine is in Castle Gate Utah, which is between Price and Helper in Carbon County. This was a coal washing plant back then, I believe. My dad worked there. Those were track homes in that area. The shots of those large vertical rocks "balance rocks" are in Castle Gate. When my mom was in high school, one of her classmates climbed to the top of balance rock and put a flag--unfortunately, he fell to his death. The flag pole still stands on top of this rock.
Those arent in Castle Gate, those are probably in Moab or possibly the San Rafael Swell, however there is a Balanced Rock Formation in Helper, which is a few miles south of Castle Gate.
