What I want to know is

1) why didn't they continue this marketing camp?

2) why does it still have a 4 speed when the Malibu has a 6?

Despite marketing, no one can disagree that the Impala is a bland car.

And the Malibu is a newer car. Back in 2004 when the Impala was made, a 4 speed was what the competition was using. When the new Impala comes in, you can expect it to sport all 6 or 7 speed transmissions.
