  • My musical hero - Schmidt. He's buried in Zurich for those who might pass by when there. As for the Swiss who are responsible for his early passing, they are probably dead too and had to live with what they did until then. The greatest Jewish tenor. Never forgotten.

  • Par delà l'histoire, votre splendide voix nous reste Herr Schmidt ...

    Merci pour le post .

  • Great

  • If I hadn't "cheated" & glanced at hidden comments, I wouldn't have understood the higher register selection of E minor & maybe would have been turned off. Now I understand & love this recording of an exceptional artist. Didn't know Schmidt had a "weak bottom" -- could someone explain the ranges of a lyric tenor? TX.

  • @nancywilken There is only one range for tenor. Is the "timbre" that makes for the type of voice. Also the "tessitura" (when the term is used to refer to the voice, and not a piece of music). You can have a specific tenor voice (spinto, ligero, lyric etc), but within the range, there is an area where your voice sounds best. For some tenors it is the upper range, for some mid, and others low. But they are all tenors. That's why you need to choose your repertoire carefully.

  • @UncleTito72 Actually, range also is a small factor. As a Dramatic tenor, I would never sing above a high B in public, but leggiero tenors (yes, also different timbre) will sometimes sing up to an F above that!

  • EXQUISITE!

    I am in RAPTURE!

Thank you for posting and thank you Timeless Artist for sharing.

  • diese wunderbare stimme höre ich zum ersten mal!

    fantastisch

  • Seele, Dein Name ist Joseph Schmidt!

  • As w/many pieces he sings this a half step UP!! His voice had a weak bottom but that hardly matters. He left us some of the most beautiful recordings of the 20th century. RIP.

  • I am in awe!

  • Beautiful, tears in his voice. Great top notes always, died a tragic death and would not have happened that way if he was not Jewish, hate filled Europe at that time. He was a favorite in Germany, they loved him until the Nazis ruined it for him.

  • A lots of tears.

  • Wonderful

  • beautiful.

  • Lovely singing! Bravo! TY J.

  • A lovely tenor voice! TY!

  • What a pleasure this is!

Thank you for sharing it here.

  • splendid ,fantastic.

  • Thank you for indescribable pleasure. The voice is a dream come true.

  • Thank you so much, I love standchen !

  • Lovely.

  • This has better quality then so many of his recordings he was amazing and cut down even before his prime. I love his la donna e mobile also for the greatest cadenza I ever heard. Bravo his voice was 6 feet tall. in spite if his short height.

  • He was born to sing Schubert. Never heard a better rendition. Greatest leggere tenor of all time.

  • Probably the simplest, most unimbellished performance of all. He just lets his magical voice say everything. A genius wrote it and a genius sings it.

  • Forgot to say thankyou to the poster of this. It has given me endless pleasure to listen to undoubtedly the best rendition of this piece.

  • God, what key is this in? Not G, no?

  • It's in E minor. The first note is B

  • But usually it's in D minor, if I'm right. He transposed it UP? Well, he probably wanted to show off a bit.

  • You're right. Björling sings this lied in D minor and he's a tenor too...

  • Nothing wrong and nothing uncommon for tenors to transpose up for certain songs. Low notes usually are not the strongest part for high voices (that's why tenors are singing as tenors, not baritones or basses, right?)

  • Sure, but this is actually the tenor version of this song. A baritone could sing this in the original key, but would probably also choose to transpose this down (DiFiDi would certainly do so when singing the Schwanengesang), a bass had to do so, after all, the song goes up to high G even in original key.

  • @piasecznik

Yes, he's singing it in E minor, a full tone up from the original key of D minor.

  • Thanks zwanzigjahr

Joseph Schmidt was a GIANT TENOR!

A voice coming from the spirit!

  • my fave tenor...

  • Beautiful...

  • Thankyou for posting this lovely serenade sung by the best tenor.
