  • Fuck the NY Times!

  • scary start

  • I agree with wyrmqueen. How could anyone possibly cover more of a story in a 3hr movie, that couldn't be better covered in a 10hr show? To say otherwise is erroneous and just plain ignorant. The only quality a movie has over a show, would be the special effects. When it comes to a show like this one, that is the least concern of the audience that is watching for the story and complexities of it. I believe the author and producers understood this, and they made the best choice in my opinion.

  • Not so, wyrmqueen. Although they would lose some aspects that movie-makers deem unimportant (such as five pages of giving the background of a holdfast that I would care about but doesn't really fit in cinema. It's not like they're doing that in the series anyway). And slamballwolf, you're another one of THOSE kind of Youtube users. Funny how you can just give yourself away like that in just four ignorant words. Peace all

  • Wow... The title to this video should be "Video Resume for a panel slot on The View."

  • you are fucking annoying

  • Wow. Just wow. I mean, do these WOMEN she keeps talking about read the novels?? THAT'S where the great story is... The HBO series does it justice- but isn't anything that couldn't have been done in making a movie of each book. Partly because the novels are so complex and descriptive that converting a 1200 pager (that'd be the 3rd one) into a almost three hour movie would be a cinch.

  • @Johng2200 Ugh no... a 10 hour season would be better adapting the books than a 3 hour movie.

  • I'm sure the bloggosphere ripped her several new ones.

  • I sort of think that she just wants attention, and a good review gets less attention than a scalding one.

  • As a woman, i felt insulted by Ms. Bellafante quotes. I KNOW that girls that actually like fantasy and sci-fy series are minority, but we exist anyway. One of the things that makes GoT great is that lack of romance, so we don't have to waste our time on broken hearts,(not totally, but still is not the priority in the series) and we can pay attetion on the important things, like the scheming and the back stabbing . One more thing: i hate sex and the city.

  • whoever claims Game of Thrones to be "too complex to follow" is apparently inattentive or not as bright as they think they are.

  • The NY Times has always been a haven for the disdainfully snooty. Smugly crapping on fantasy/sci fi has long been part of the MO for the superior intellects at the Times.

Keep in mind, it was the NY Times that turned their nose up at the Lord of the Rings books more than fifty years ago, predicting that such false literature would soon be forgotten. Wrong as usual.

  • Excellent rebuttal!

And of course it would be The New York Times.

How sad and absurd that as far as science fiction and fantasy have been embraced by the global culture, still these douchebag critics persist, snidely dismissing anything remotely fantastical.

This kind of archaic thinking belongs back in the 1950's.

  • Thanks for fighting that idiotic review Roth.

  • If this show gets cancelled cause of idiot yuppies in new york who don't know anything about fantasy or hard as fuck stories - im gonna rage. Keep it going HBO!!

  • @Nickodemusodurn its comments like this thatll keep the show running

  • @Nickodemusodurn I wouldn't worry about that: as well as being critically acclaimed, the ratings have been superb- better each week, in fact.

  • Game of Throne is one of the two things that reconciled me with fantasy

    the other one is Pathfinder

  • I am a big urban fantasy fan but I still love pure fantasy, and am very excited that finally a fantasy novel has been translate into a TV series which has a brilliant cast, amazing script, and beautiful visuals. After 2 episodes Game of Thrones has taken the #1 spot on my list of favourite TV programs.

And yes I think I can wrap my female brain around a complex storyline without passing out or having a seizure.

  • The New York Times is slamming the story of a New York Times bestseller. If I didn't find the hypocrisy so hilarious, I would be offended.

I can picture the publishing company having a meeting to figure out if they should add the 'NYT bestseller' label to the book's cover or not. Obviously, since it's "business", they probably won't, and onto the cover it will go.

I guess business doesn't have to make sense, but it would be nice if it did once in a while.

  • Learn some History before talk, or altmost read the books, medial age was sexist, its a fact, that story is fantasy BASED in history.

In any case, if you see the rest of the season, you will see how powerfull a woman can have in these story.

  • One dislike is Ginia Bellafante.

  • The one dislike was Ms. Bellafante, lol.

  • Run back to your disney fairy tales!

  • Shagga needs to feed that bitches genitals to the goats!

  • LOL... I think HBO paid NYTimes for them to write stupid things about their show so the could create a bigger bang for they show's premiere... And I think it was A GREAT IDEA... Just look at the fuzz it has created...

  • too complex for stupid americans, maybe.

  • GO GEEK GIRLS!

  • There is a lot of sex, but I think it's to ensnare the male audience.

  • @Dianeva89 Can't agree with you more :) ... One ep I watched had 4 mins of girls fingering eachother.

I just sat there waiting for when the story was going to start again. Id def say that was in there for the men more than the woman.

  • Go Roth, That journalist needs putting in her place. Not all women have a shopping addiction or have less than 10 as their IQ. Fantasy is amazing and games of thrones is one of the best! =]

  • Thanks for speaking up for the female geek crowd girl!

  • Anyone who things Game of Thrones is primarily about sex is completely missing out. Its about greed, power, corruption, murder, betrayal, plots, scheming, twists, and more. In short...everything a great show should have. I feel sorry for the NY Times writer to be honest.

  • Hi Roth, left a comment on your artical I hope you like it. I'm really looking forward to this show.

HBO seems to be delving deeper into gonra shows. True Blood, from a production POV is a fearly safe show. As it takes place in modern US. Sparticus, would have been a more build intensive but was only a hand full of locations, I think maybe these were HBO sort of testing the waters. Now we have GoT, a full blown fantacy epic, maybe they'll try Sci-Fi some time. What do you think?

  • u fucking tell them babe's

  • It's time we admit something. People who don't understand genre fiction (I'm not saying those that don't like it or don't care for it, but those who flat out do not understand what's going on onscreen when there is any fantasy element involved) have no imagination. If they see something that does not instantly relate to what they already know their brain turns off. It's tempting to look down on those people...heck, let's look down on those people!

  • YUE GO GURL?

  • hahaha Luv you Roth!

  • Comment removed

  • This lady sounds like a d-bag.

  • @SereneFire88 Not you Roth! lol.

  • @rhythmiclullaby Well I don't see no cars or M16 so far in the promos so until then I'll be calling it a Period Show.

  • Hmmmm...Roth? Have you seen Spartacus, Rome and the Tudor or even the new Camelot? This is just another period tv show loaded with sex and whatever storyline happened to be there.

I will agree with you about the unprofessionalism of the reviewer though.

  • @just1transfan I love the Tudors. I think it's a fantastic show and it's now just all about the sex. Although, I feel that these producers add in all the sex to make it more exciting and appealing. There have been many period pieces with little sex that have been described as "boring" and I think that might be one of the reasons. Maybe it's a necessary dynamic to gain enough viewers, but I don't think it's all about the sex.

  • @SereneFire88 not just*

  • @just1transfan I can't say much about the other shows (I haven't seen them). But 'Rome' was very accurate as far as the life of your average Roman was like, depictions of the Roman view of sexuality included. While it may seem over loaded with sex to *us* the Romans had very different viewpoints on both sex and nudity.

The creators of Rome weren't really going for sexploitation, they were aiming for historical accuracy...I guarantee that most historians would tell you the same thing.

  • Kick her ass!

  • Roth you go girl...LOL

  • Oh dear .. what an awful review. I just read Bellafante's article. Sad there are still people around like that who still can not grasp the finer aspects of the fantasy genre. Plus I bet she is paid a lot of money for writing that sort of nonsense.

I wonder if she has actually read any of Martin's books.

  • I think the one statement she made about if you can't follow it go back to sex in the city was written in a different context. She felt that's what she was being told not that she was telling other women that. Still I'm glad women are defending their love of genre. I've heard more accounts of women being excited for Game of Thrones than men and I don't think it's for the sex.

  • heresy!

  • If I could afford the channel I would be watching, love this type of show. This from a 72 yo female.

  • You go Roth!

  • Lol, go Roth!
