  • Ceux qui n'aiment pas cela sont des dégénérés

  • @cbrace, very sexy and sultry -- yet nothing obscene.

  • This was considered really hot in those days. It still holds up today. The movie gives a good glimpse of small town America in the 50's.

  • which band is playing moonglow??

  • I'm still trying to figure out what Arthur O'Connell was laughing about.

  • I'll NEVER tire of this! And I'm so glad you focused on only that beautiful first dance, and not on how it ended so abruptly. (In the movie the abrupt is vital. But as a moment in time and as a tenderly romantic vid and song, this is perfect!) <3

  • Lovely and erotic. But the nasty comment at 3:00 spoils it (this is how women set each other up).

  • In the 50's anything goes.William Holden was way too old to be old for the erotically sumptuous shiksa Kim Novak. She steams up the screen. But again, this was the fifties. The scene was also helped the instrumental Moonglow-Picnic masterpiece which was a huge number 1 billboard hit in 1956.Still a classic scene, which made this movie a hit.

  • Wow!!!

  • This is a gem.

  • I watch the movie just for this scene!

  • Magnificent. Kim was a woman fully aware of and capable of expressing her immense sex appeal

  • BEAUTIFUL, ROMANTIC CAPTIVATING FOR ALL TIME!

  • Holden is so freaking sexy here!

  • My favorite movie, love them together, one of the sexiest scenes ever.

  • No, they were simply beautiful together!!! He was such a handsome man. Is Kim Novak still living? Vertigo is just spectacular, as well.

  • @pagethompson24 She is as of 2011-11-19

  • incrediblethis scene

  • I first saw this scene as a teenager and it moves me as much now as it did then. Hot!

  • Her hand in the left chest while dancing, this could be the awkward moment

  • WOW: Todays actors, actresses, comedians substute nudity, commonness, filthy language for talent......BTW William Holden was perfect for this part

  • @azbyhorn yes, he certainly was perfect....I love the way he takes her hand & presses it to his heart....

  • William Holden was a wonderful actor, but he was so wrong for the role of Hal. I wish James Dean had lived to play this role; he would have been PERFECT! Or maybe Paul Newman. Holden, besides being too old, was just the wrong type for the role.

  • @cynthiacher James Dean Would have been away too young for the role, maybe Paul Newman, but it lacked a big atletic body to play a successful football player

  • @quiuboleese The Hal character was supposed to have been 21 year old. Dean was 24 years old when he died. If he had played Hal in this movie he would have been only 24 years old; not too old at all.

  • Responder a este video... James Dean was too young for the Hal role, Maybe Paul Newman, but he lacked the atletic body to be considered a successful Football player

  • one of the most sensual scenes in film history.....I was so in love with William Holden after seeing this the 1st time.....

  • Magnificent how they hold that romantic space for each other ; she is so centered and focused and present for him and his very subtle move , Her moves are delicious and inspired and beautiful , especially with the loving smile .

Makes me so happy to see this beautiful love and potentiality { for all of us } .

    {on a good hair-day :-}

  • @caverly beautifully put. Thanks for your comment

  • @caverly there was no rehearsal for this shot but it went soo well.

  • lol she dances his face is like: "wtf?"

  • "You use to dance like that Flo. " Wonderful!

  • It seems like such a simple sceen, but the magic is hypnotizing. The music is simply beautiful and Novak is mesmerizingly gorgeous. But Holden is the genious. He appears a little uncoordinated when dancing with the girl, but when Novak appears, he floats. I'm a man and this guy is so smoking hot (yes, I said it) that it disturbes me. The scene is so gently erotic I can smell their pheromones and feel their blood rushing. What a masterpeice. Bravo.

  • Talk about movie chemistry, movie magic, great moments in film history...This scene still gives me the chills every time I see it. Who care how old they are...just watch the chemistry and the pure movie magic...Ah Hollywood!

  • It is my sad duty to tell my fellow YouTubers that Cliff Robertson, who made his film debut in 'Picnic' passed away recently. He had just turned 88.

  • Every girl in the USA wanted to dance with Bill that year!!

  • @charleneaponte1 :

In 1955/56 women across the world fell in love with Bill Holden watching him tenderly romance Jennifer Jones in Love is A Many Splendored Thing and dance with Kim Novak under a full moon in PICNIC. Lorraine

  • Whoops ! I ment 'Love is a many Splendored thing' (silly billiy)

  • I know the music well, remember it in the charts. But I never did get to see the film, or Bill's other great of that decade 'Picnic'. I'm very surprised by this scenes erotic content--for this period, more like the 60's. Thanks for this, I must do some catching up.

  • Please remember, people aged a lot quicker back then. Cliff Robertson looked so much younger in this film because he had an easy life. Bill plays a train-grabbing Hobo who is a diamond in the rough - falling in love with a diamond in the smooth. A small masterpiece.

  • Also a statement of Joshua Logan's directing. No damn jerky camera moves. Why? Because they had a script written by someone over 30. The producers of "Family Ties" and "Friends" would have had a teenager write it.

  • siempre es bello poder ver esta escena de kim.

  • why cant I watch the whole film on here?

  • Um, it doesn't get any better than this--romance with a 'cool' sexual heat, great actors and first class soundtrack.

  • Is it true that Kim Novak was really a man??

  • @MsTommyknocker Yeah--played by Snozzle Durante.

  • What a romantic scene of a movie , one of the most ever seen, they deserved each other, I was eleven when I first saw this movie, the stunning kim novak , unique I stayed astounded by her beauty. it all was there : the night, the lake, the lights, the love between two lovers, what a dance, what a melody !!!!! thx for posting

  • Two comments: 1 If I were in Holden's place at 0:50, when Kim Novak came down those steps clapping, my pants would be wet by the time she got to me! 2. I kept worrying, from 2:50, that they'd be so wrapped up in their dance that they'd fall off that pier into the water! Seriously, though - Beautiful scene!!

  • That magic that happens between two people, sometimes, a once in a lifetime. The most wonderful feeling in the world. We're not talking about sex but LOVE. TRUE LOVE. Romance, The kind that is not given away so cheaply. Know what I mean?". What a scene!

  • es el pulp fiction de la epoca!!

  • Blending those songs together--pure genius!

  • The scean recalls my youth. It will always be my favorite.

  • One of the sexiest moments not just in Picnic but in any film.God he's smokin hot in this.Beautiful moment thanks for posting.

  • I saw this scene when I was 17. It made an. Indelible impression and it's lovely to be able to relive that thank you for posting

  • oh was he handsom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • mesmerizing i saw this when i was only a child and i saw it in 2011 and it still moved right through my soul now this what i call a classic movie

  • Kim Novak & William Holden em uma história muito bonita...

    vale a pena assistir...

mais um um belo momento do Cinema!

  • wow...

  • Picnic ran the other day on TCM -- the post film commentary by the TCM host said that Holden and Novak could not stand each other. They didn't even speak off set. Furthermore, neither could dance. The cinematographer James Howe solved the problem by having the camera on wheels, revolving around them to give the illusion of dancing.

  • wow, what a moment! But makes all of us not so sexy girls jealous.

  • The beauty and sensuality of this scene is unsurpassed......there has never been another film like it! ( Loooooooove the song Moonglow!)

  • The interlude of the violins was supposed to enhance and emphasize the sudden romantic chemistry between the two, however, after the recent airing of the film on TCN Manckiewicz insists on bursting our bubble by disclosing the fact that Holden and Novak rarely spoke to one another and did not get along. A camera on wheels was also used to in a circular fashion to give the effect that the duo was "floating on air" during the number when in reality they "bobbed around the floor awkwardly".

  • Holden thought he was too old for the part. Holden and Novak didn't care for each other and hardly spoke to each other off set.

  • syrupy violins? This is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded!!! I love this song and I love this movie. William Holden wasn't supposed to be a few years out of college - if you watch the movie closely his glory days on the football field were long behind him. He's always been one of my favorite actors. And Kim Novak was so beautiful - Mag IS the pretty one!

  • The "syrupy violins" is what makes the song!!

  • This is probably one of the most erotic scenes in film history. So what if Holden was 37 and Novak was 23. IT WORKS!

  • @RImusclebear Yes, I agree. It does work!

  • Pure 'SMOLDERING' longing in this wonderful scene from the movie PICNIC..But then who wouldn't smolder over the VERY sexy William Holden.....

  • Novak did a pretty good job keeping her balance despite having "Vertigo", How 'bout Stephanie Powers cutting in on this one.

  • Moonglow/Picnic was what today would be described as a "mash-up"...two songs merged seamlessly. Kinda like Holden and Novak. Perfect.

  • Sorry sir, I desagree about violins and chords, this soundtrack had been composed over a minor triad, with some variations it's constant during the movie. The choreography when Madge Owens is leaving home is in perfect synchronization, the main theme is still present, the same harmony over the same triad. The violins are sweet and lofty, this sound makes bigger this magic moment. It reflects the way of feeling in the 50's, something missed nowadays

  • I adore this scene. It simply sizzles. In addition to "Moonglow", don't forget how perfectly the "Picnic" love theme from the underscore melds with "Moonglow". Holden, Novack, the music and the Japanese Lanterns = perfection. However, whenever I watch this film, it is Susan Strasberg who always captures my attention.

  • Susan's father was Lee Strasberg..father of NY modern acting..and last role in Godfather II.

  • @tallpaul521 The late, beautiful Susan Strasberg originated the role of Anne Frank in 'The Diary of Anne Frank' on Broadway.

  • While the guys moon over Kim Novak, we (the girls) prefer to moon over a very sexy William Holden. Even though Picnic was made at a time when sex on film was unheard of, this sexually-charged erotic dance stands as one of the best sex scenes on film. Thank you for posting this. It never gets old.

  • This is the most sexy scene ever without puffing & panting and ripping off clothes. They new how to make films when this was made. Yvonne

  • I saw this film over 50 years ago in my testosterone-filled teens and this scene has stayed with me. It is the most erotic one I know. The way that Kim Novak moves is hypnotic, thank you for posting this

  • Simply beautiful, I love this music since more than 50 years. In 1955 I was a young girl but I've never seen this motion picture. This scene is indescribable romantic. In the last few hours I saw it again and again. Thank you for loading it up here in YouTube. Many greetings from Germany

  • Love the song Moonglow.

  • Bill Holden was the perfect person for this part. He was just the right age, and overloaded with TALENT! One of my all time favorite actors!

  • @450984 I share completely your enthusiasm for Holden. But he was 37 when he made this film, in which he plays someone shortly out of college. At the time, Kim Novak was 23 !! Sorry, but I respectfully disagree: he was too old for this part.

  • Comment removed

  • @cbrace

I second that emotion! As good as an actor Bill is in this classic 50's flick, he's OBVIOUSLY too old for the part. It was well known he was a heavy drinker off screen. And it's sad but true that it was beginning to show by the mid-50's (flabby skin & puffy eyes). But the fellows who did the role on Broadway (Ralph Meeker, etc) were not well known enough. Bill Holden was probably the number one male star when this was made....thus Columbia Pictures went with box office appeal!

  • @cbrace Hmmm...for a man who was "too old" for the part, he sure did a fine job of acting as a much younger man.

  • @cbrace OK I agree but Josh Logan made it work! You have to agree with me on that!

  • @cbrace If I remember correctly, actually Holden played someone with years out of college, who had achieved nothing since. In any case it was a great movie. And the syrupy violins over the small combo playing Moonglow worked for me.

    Thanks for uploading this.

  • Check out 0:23 when Kim comes softly strolling in. Thanks for the post.

  • @cbrace maybe in 1955--but he looked great at 37, and Novak at 37 looked like my grandmother working on the Atkins Diet-

  • @cbrace That age is the drama that makes the climax exists, when he sees that he is not young any more and

has done nothing with his life, someone younger would delude himself to thing is still young. It's called the 40's crisis, it is in the conclusion that he decides to give himself to true love, and to be patient etc.

  • The violins add to the mood and the sensuality of the song and are brought in at the perfect time as they gaze at each other . I'm with you dwsingrs the violins are superb .The way the music and acting are blended in this scene is nothing short of brilliant .

  • "Pity about the syrupy violins."

If other opinions are allowed here, I consider the violins superb. If violins not allowed in this of all songs, then, pray tell, when are they allowed?

  • A great performance also by the late Susan Strassberg ( the younger sister ) look at the sadness in her face and the body language , perfectly done .

  • NIce but Bergman Hitch and Cary still beat 'em all!

  • The woman at 3:24 is Rosalind Russell , my all time best actress. Have you never watched her in Mame. a must see!

  • Whoa, this guy's a total jerk here! I mean, I'd go for Kim as well, but he totally ditches that other girl! Is he not as mean in the context of the film? I haven't seen it before.

  • @Milkdudds92 The other girl is just Kim's baby sister in the film. He was just showing her how to dance, but she did have a young girl crush on him .

  • It is not about the dancing here, it is the Chemistry!

  • I was 9 years old and lived in Salina, Kansas where this scene was filmed. Still remember the excitement in town during the filming of Picnic.

  • Kim's dress does most of the dancing! This is not exactly Dancing with the Stars. So many things are wrong here, but it works! We can see exactly what draws them together.

  • I think I've always loved William Holden.............

  • I've never seen the film, but that music is great and Kim looked just about as good as anyone has ever looked, didn't she? CuffColl.

  • Sooo sexy, wow!

  • The violins are NOT syrupy in this song, or context. Guess I'm old-fashioned.

  • wow. freeze frame @ 1:42

and hollywood is wondering why the movies today don't have the longevity of those from the old studio system?

  • Saw the film as a teenager in the 50's. Funny thing the ice cream girl girl was blond and beautiful also. so I developed a crush on her. Sadly she was older than me and didn't see me as William Holden. Ah! those were the days:))

  • dave chappelle would do such a good stand up talking about this.

  • They dance as if there was no one else in the world, and the stare, hardly blinking.

  • Glad most feel like me...just will add, they dont make thim like that any more, and feel sorry for the young who are missing out on that feeling..Moonglow.

  • You guys are tards. These guys can't act and that dancing is pathetic. The only thing good about this scene is the song "Moonglow."

  • @mflores910

This is 1955..dance we may call it,but what it is there is none around now...there was no wham bam....it has a to go with the flow feeling,i get it seeing and hearing it again.

  • @butters3166 Ssshh, spoken like a true expert. again, this pathetic dancing.

  • This is one of the most magical and sexy scenes in movie history...

  • William Holden was a big movie star,no doubt about, but he was a lousy dancer.

  • @MOGGS1942 - He didn't want to do the scene because he knew he couldn't dance. I think he even asked for more pay to do it ! His biography is full of lots of fascinating bits of information about the movies he made.

  • @raymonda100 I believe he got very drunk to do the scene

  • @MOGGS1942 For this scene did it really matter he was a lousy dancer? Also he was miscat but it didn't matter!!!

  • The first few seconds are difficult. What beauty. Makes me cry with yearning. William Holden, what an expressive explosive talent! Nothing like that now, no way...

  • thanks cbrace for your reply. I will try again as suggested ;>) I didn't know that YT could be iffy. Thanks for the tip and for posting this video.

  • One of the most unforgettable movie moments ever! Too bad lthe quality of this is so jerky and it doesn't flow and float with the erotic mystery of the original. Still magical.

  • @mimibyrd1 I assure you the video itself is fine, but YouTube playback can be iffy, depending on network traffic and other factors we viewers have no control over. Try again another time, please!

  • @mimibyrd1 Install RealPlayer, free, and you can download the video.

  • I think it's both..but what a moment that was..

  • to me, William Holden is the 2nd most beautiful actor of all time. Right after the king of beauty Montgomery Clift

  • I concur. Novak enters the scene like a Greek goddess. The interaction between the two actors is electric. I read somewhere that Holden could NOT dance, and needed to be (ahem) "lubricated" in order to do this scene. Somehow, I doubt that info. He has wonderful grace and instincts on the dancefloor. The two profiles, filling the screen, also remind me of the scene in West Side Story when Tony and Maria find each other on the dancefloor. Moonglow/Picnic is movie music at its best. Thanks.

  • I have never seen a more beautiful woman on screen than Kim Novak in Picnic

  • @ToughXArmy69 wait until you see her in Strangers When We Meet (1960). :)))

  • I don't think you can remake a scene like this today. They threw away the the mold after this was made..Incredible!!

  • Kim Novak makes the top ten list of the sexiest and most attractive women ever and none of the so called hotties of today even come close to making that list.

  • @joraider08 she could move mountains with the subtlest look. That is true talent.

  • @cbrace Could move mountains...and did.

  • God, but Kim Novak is INCREDIBLY fine!

  • is the woman at 3:24 drunk?

  • @MegaCrowman - The actress' name is Rosalind Russell, a great actress. And I think her character is loaded, yes.

  • @MegaCrowman yes, she was drowning her frustrations

  • @MegaCrowman watch the movie PICNIC..classic,then you will get it.

  • This clip is screwed up...it's wiggling. :(

  • William Holden was such a hottie.

  • Absolutly electrifying is the only words to describe this! (This is my all-time favorite movie scene.) Too bad films today have virtually buried the art of communication that is so powerfully portrayed in this scene, Well said rmtmiller!

  • The most tender and pivotal moment where all the character's plastic lives were then ripped apart.

  • i love this movie

  • As long as we'll have this kind of scenes, our hearts will beat faster. I'll never let it go away from my memories, because there I'll find my your feelings always

  • One of the most romantic moments in cinematic history. Mesmerizing, you can Feel the passion between William Holden and Kim Novak.

  • Hoden was terrible miscast but Josh Logan made it work.

  • its a beautiful video clip from the movie, I like the track & the two main

Characters Kim & William - thanks for the posting

  • I saw this movie yesterday for the first time and I was......totally.....blown away!!!!!!!!

This was GREAT!!!!! Five star movie with a great cast, a great story, and superb sensuality! William Inge's screenplay was a hit! I also thought that Kim Novak and William Holden were wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However, I always felt bad for Madge's little sister and the "old maid" school teacher, I thought they didn't get the attention they deserved, it made me kind of sad for them, in a way. :(

  • One of the most incredibly erotic scenes of all time.. the chemistry between Kim Novak and William Holden..and the song 'Moonglow'...it's enough to steam up your TV set....and the undercurrent of sadness when you look at the faces of Verna Felton and Betty Field watching them below..all in all..sheer magic

  • @Sugarbehr1967

Is it sadness or one of those bitter-sweet moments those of us who have been-around-for-awhile watch from the sidelines and enjoy, remembering when we were the dancers..?

  • @Sugarbehr1967 - Not chemistry--great acting! William Holden's biographer said he didn't like Kim much because she was too religious for him--praying on the set!

  • @Sugarbehr1967 You expressed my feelings perfectly...thanks!

  • @recovering16 More than welcome :)

  • Concerning the young Susan Strasberg - is she the one that got aced out by Kim Novak?

  • One of the most hypnotizing, romantic, and sexy moments to grace the silver screen...and aren't we the lucky ones to be able to experience it over and over. Thank you for posting.

  • I love this movie...

  • Superb casting, acting, direction, setting, and the combination of 'Moonglow' and the Theme from Picnic musically out of this world. The sensitivity of the acting of William Holden, Kim Novak, and the rest of the cast is matched by direction and cutting of exquisite taste. Thank you, also, cbrace' for stopping the clip where you did. Although Rosalind Russell's intervention into the scene, in the film, is further brilliance of writing, acting and direction, it would spoil the scene's idyll.....

  • They said he was to old to make this at the time what a mistake he was the greatest .

I miss the profesional way it was done it really drags you into it .I don't think we will ever see the like again.

  • Best movie scene ever. Loved it since the first time I saw it as a teenager in 1955.

  • That poor little girl in the non-pink dress just got smoked! :P

Why can't they make movies like this anymore? They didn't have all the effects and bullshit but they could make so, so much happen with real acting talent and a director with focus. Yes, these movies are from the day when people didn't have such short attention spans, and Hollywood didn't try to cram seven or eight movie genres into one film.

  • Bill Holden ruled. Mitchum, the Rat Packers, Bogart and others kick the shit out of the so-called leading men of today. It's why I hardly go to the actual cinema nowadays; when I do it's for "smaller" but more interesting flicks.

  • I fell in love with Bill Holden in this movie. Moonglow, one of my favorite songs.

Thanks for sharing cbrace, syrupy violins and all LOL

  • Certain scenes are simply perfect in every way. This is one of them. Kim Novak-I think I need to be hosed off with cracked ice now. God, what a woman!

  • unique....William Holden, Kim Novak, Rosalynd Russell....that Hollywood exists no longer!

  • @vHumboldt77 Right! :((

  • My Favorite Movie, My Favorite Movie Scene, My Favorite Musical Score, The Hottest Actor In Hollywood History!!! Bill Holden You Still Are Hot!!!! <3

  • I LOVE PICNIC AND THIS DANCE!!!! THANKS FOR POSTING!!!

  • A super hot scene. The music reminds me of the stuff my parents used to listen to on lazy Sundays, but in retrospect, they were more laid back than I ever gave them credit for.

  • Wonderful movie! Kim Novak and William Holden were perfect in their role. A very beautiful couple. What a great movie!

  • William Holden was one of the greats, I never saw him a lousy movie! He plays this part to PERFECTION!

  • Now if the women of today could look , dress, and move like Kim, there would be more appreciation of Ladies.

  • I wish I was Kim Novak in my dream, dancing with WH. What a sweet dream.
