  • he is a great player but for some reason this makes me want to puke..sorry

  • So great, very nice.

  • How deep is your love!

  • So where was his pick hiding up until 2:59?

  • @toober222 between pinky and ring finger, close to the palm

  • Wonderful, this touches my soul..! And three guys out there have NO CLUE.!

  • he does this exact arrangement on a live album with benny green called jazz at the bistro. really really killer stuff!

  • This is music that reaches deep inside you, for sure.

  • Thanks for posting! I'm transcribing this and got stuck at 1:45 with the harmonics, had no idea how he was getting those and seeing him play it helps a ton!

  • Outstanding, what an artist, thanks

  • holy crap it's a bee gees tune

  • Awesome!!!!

  • ..Back to practicex1000

  • killing....

  • Tommy emmanuel,Wes Montgomery,Tuck Andress,Lenny Breau and George Benson...

    all in one man!

  • I saw the red hot chilli peppers do this song live......Russell is so much better lol

  • Amazing- !~!!

  • amazing!!! but i wish it was louder tho :(

  • I agree with musicole about the kick butt, Russell is a complete guitar master, he covers all the bases at exceptional levels. it would be nice if he were to do a solo CD, at least one.

  • Absolutely Great!! Russell you're still kick Butt!! Takes me back to the days in Atlanta, GA at the Jazz jam sessions!

  • The three who dislike are virgin !

  • How deep is your love!!...Awesome!!!

  • Wow!!!!!!

  • Thats my couisen !!!!!

  • WTF...Beautiful

  • wonderful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Is there tabs for this?!

  • @aragorn767 You're no longer in tablature world now, son!

  • @jazzguitardotcom True dat. U can't fake jazz.

  • @jazzguitardotcom LOL THATS FRAKIN HILAROUS!!!!..but true..lol thanks for the laugh!!

  • The single harmonic and arranging factor separating all contemporary guitarist playing fingerstyle jazz is the concious choice of bass notes or arbitrarily allowing the fingering to dictate. Malone seems to choose his bass lines well.

  • VERY underrated guitarist

  • Wow, great video. Russell truly plays the beaty within a piece of music. str8cain , absolutely says it beautifully. Truly inspires me to be more that a "guitar player" but a musician. Someone who can transfer unspoken emotions through music....

  • Amazing

  • i am a hip hop fan and love it . also devout metallica fan ..love kirk..but i was wacthin sytycd and heard a song buy dianna krall (a case of you ) that my favorite dancer russell danced to and it touched my soul.i finally found it on youtube. then heard blvd of brokn dreams and heard this cat play a solo live that made me realize ive been giving kirk to much credit . this russell guy is on a whole nother level. i feal like ive been deprived of a more real music. this is wonderfull

  • @str8cain Wow,another open minded musician-good for you. I grew up on Aerosmith, still love them as well as Zep.,Hendrix, Peter Green,FREE, the 3 King's,SRV...and the likes of Russell-all because of the variety I've found on youtube. Who knows maybe even one day I'll enjoy listening to some hip hop with my kids. Cheers

  • check out Blockhead and J Dilla. J Dilla is a huge influence on Chris Dave, already legendary modern jazz drummer. first two hip hop producers that come to my mind when it comes to jazz and hip hop. have your kids listen to underground hip hop, the real hip hop, not what they see on TV and what not. hip hop is the urban child of Jazz.. a lot of the early hip hop emcees and beat producers were children of jazz musicians living in the ghetto. jazz is all around us, in the least expected places.

  • @str8cain ...Great to hear your introduction into the music of Russell Malone. His new cd comes out Nov 2, 2010...Triple Play on MAXJAZZ records. Trio of bass and drums (no piano). Should be ineresting. Lots of original tunes.

  • oh man, gotta love the bee gees.

  • B E A U T I F U L .

  • I love it

    Johnny

  • wow! simply beautiful, (at a speed I can even play)

  • Crazy!! Use of artificial harmonics is supreme!!

  • i like this tune a lot, i don't have words for the performance of Mr. Malone. Thanks for post this video.

  • What a great sound... I have a fantastic album by Roy Hargrove called Habana and he´s on the guitar. He just plays the right notes on the right place, simple and perfect

  • Damn!

  • love that bass movement Russell you've been studying theorey I am going to guess. Unless you do it all from position playing which I doubt. Guitarists are at a disavantage to piano in that most theorey books are written with piano in mind.

  • i agree

it's very hard for a guitarits to "beat" a piano

  • UHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! LINDOOOO

  • 1:44 - 1:48! Beautiful music

  • Waouu! I'm a fan!

  • What Beautiful Arrangement for How deep is Your Love Rusell is a master

  • MASTER!!!!

  • Russell Malone is one of my favorite guitarists. I love the way he phrases his music. He is also an amazing accompanist. It is hard to accompany a singer like Diane Krall and find just the right things to put in. His playing on the Nat Cole song Krall does "you're looking at me" and his solo on it are amazing.

  • @lougar1 ....Russell Malone. His new cd comes out Nov 2, 2010..."Triple Play" on MAXJAZZ records. A Trio of bass and drums (no piano). Should be ineresting. Lots of original tunes.

  • Nice Bee Gee´s tune... how deep is your love...

    beautiful sounds...

  • And well you might smile after a solo like that young man. (I'm an old man!) Superb. Your right hand technique on this one is unusual, but so effective and your harmonics are perfect. Thank you Russell for a soulful and musical interlude.

    Regards... John

  • Really amazing Russell!! Congratulations

  • ive seen this guy twice, i saw him last night at dizzys at lincoln center and he blew me away once again. absolutely pheonomenal.

  • Might I suggest (for those who have never heard) the Live at Jazz Standards 1 and 2 albums. Some of the best live jazz guitar work ever.

  • gotta agree with u there bro. absolutely amazing albums.

  • @masboracho ....Russell Malone. His new cd comes out Nov 2, 2010..."Triple Play" on MAXJAZZ records. A Trio of bass and drums (no piano). Should be ineresting. Lots of original tunes.

  • He only uses 2 fingers on his right hand! Strong right hand! And what a beautiful sound.

  • Thanks for posting !

  • Damn!!!

  • Anthony Wilson was already nominated for a Grammy long before he hooked up with Diana Krall. But anyway...

I wish Russell Malone would release a solo jazz guitar album of just this kind of stuff. What a magnificent musician!

  • It is also an interesting fact that Diana Krall did not get nominated for a Grammy until Russell started recording with her -- three consecutive albums -- the third one, "When I Look In Your Eyes" won for 1999 Vocal Jazz Album, and was the first jazz album to be nominated for Album of The Year since George Benson's "Breezin." (1976-which won that year.)

  • @Flat5guitar I agree. He is a great player, but I think Joe Pass, is the greatest solo guitarest their is. Please check him out on Youtube. I'm sure you know who he is. What does your username Flatguitar mean?

  • Its kind of ignorant to say that Russell Malone is known for playing with Diana Krall. The only guitarist that got famous that way is Anthony Wilson.

  • It is not ignorant to say that Russell Malone is known for playing with Diana Krall. He DID get more exposure for playing with her and being on her Grammy-nominated and Grammy-Winning albums. Russell actually won the Downbeat Guitarist of the Year for 1999 (or thereabouts), the year he left Diana Krall.

  • I wonder if the Gibb brothers would appreciate this arrangement. Beautiful. I'm going to have to get some Russell Malone CDs.

  • This guitarist is a master at what he does. His solo jazz guitar work is so perfect...and the tone is so sublime. The harmonics are breathtaking...truly a gifted player worthy of notice and respect.

  • how deep is your love!!

  • So cool that he plays a Bee Gee's tune!

  • And you know this because.....?

  • Russell is the king of this style of solo guitar! This is full of emotion and like anything great hearing it a 100 times is as enjoyable as the first time!

  • I can only say what everyone else says, maybe worth mentioning that two finger technique is quite impressive.

  • Hammergeil!

  • this guys owns

  • Just beautiful! I especially like the Lenny Breau harmonics. He's a smooth, brilliant player.

  • this guitarist touches me more deeply than any other player around today..so sensitive, lyrical, earthy and a tone to die for!!!

  • @aidybop ....Russell Malone. His new cd comes out Nov 2, 2010..."Triple Play" on MAXJAZZ records. A Trio of bass and drums (no piano). Should be ineresting. Lots of original tunes.

  • Brilliant!

  • es un buen guitarrista

  • What a beautiful arrangement of How Deep Is Your Love by the Bee Gees. I've always thought it would sound nice on guitar. This is extraordinary! What a player.

  • good stuff

  • Oh my gosh! That's awesome and beautiful.

  • Those passages where Russell plays harmonics are pretty astounding, and the sound is so full; does he play PAIRS of harmonics simultaneously? (first time I've ever seen THAT done...)

  • Ted Greene was the master of that and also lenny breau!

  • Thanks for posting this amazing performance!

  • See you tonight at the Metropolitan Museum with Dianne Reeves. Looking forward to it.

  • Fender twin ?

  • HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE.

    BEE GEE'S SON.

  • Huh?

  • No you can't. That's heavy shit baby

  • Can you get a better sound than that?

  • I've been a fan for a long time...but thank you for the visual...nice to see his great technique!

  • Interesting technique, warm sound, beautiful composition.

  • wonderful! very tasteful and beautifully done.

  • He reminds me guitarist/composer Freddy Bryant. Very creative and tasteful. The main difference is that Freddy uses mainly classical style fingerpicking.

  • Yeah man, Russell is a reluctant monster . He could rip the ass of that guitar, but he always plays with taste expression and beauty . In short a true Jazz artist

  • Damn... 2 L-5! Wow

  • Hi soul1axe: Thanks for the reply/comment. I just heard from the man himself, and you are probably closer than I was if an L-5 is closer to the Super 5 ... He said it was a common mistake made because the head looks like a Johnny Smith (it probably even says Super 5 on it), but it is a 1978 (or 79) SUPER 5. I have not researched Gibsons enough to know the difference. I am sure you would know better because you play/own them. Thanks again. Kandie Webster in Washington State / jazzylover59

  • Love your work!

  • Great Musician,

its my first known about him

  • I have never had the pleasure of hearing this amazing artist play until I just watched this video. I am now a fan. The comments about the guitar are interesteng, but I suspect that this guy could make a plastic ukelele sound good, Its all in the hands and the heart of which he clearly has both in abundance.

Thank you for posting this video.

  • No, Russell has not recorded with Earl Klugh, but oddly enough they just played (May 3-6 in Pittsburgh) a four-night concert series with Bill Frisell titled "Night of Guitars." This event was created by Earl Klugh and it was the first time all three had ever played together. Some speical stuff might come of it - maybe a recording or DVD. We can hope. Check out Earl's website. The ad should even still be there possibly. -- Kandie

  • Hi robthereedman: This guitar that Russell is using here is the Gibson Johnny Smith. Not susre what year -- 1985 possibly? He now uses the Custom L-5 for the past couple of years. Check out his most recent CD "Live At Jazz Standard Volume One" (MAXJAZZ) and Volume Two is coming July 17, 2007. "Jazz Requires Passion!" -- Kandie Webster / jazzylover59

  • bee gees...year!!!

  • Anyone got the intro he did to Route 66 for Diana Krall?... I wanna learn it!

  • go to the jazz guitar group on allaboutjazz and get involved with the jazz guitar guys there. They share transcription all the time.

  • Russell, You are absolutely wonderful! It is great knowing a person and artist of your stature.

  • I played that guitar last year, the action is incredibly smooth

  • Very good performance, harmonisation of the melody and those Chord harmonics ,got alot of inspiration from this ,thanks for posting guitarfestival.

  • wonderful beautiful amazing him and mcbride are perfect together

  • Thanks you so much, guitatfestival, for finally putting this up. Where has this been all this time. There is not enough good video of Russell playing available. 3:28 is too little. Tell me there is more! jazzylover59

  • Russell, I don't know..."How Deep Is YOUR Love?" jazzylover59 4/29/07

  • Russell MALONE is a magician with a pick! That is absolutely beautiful to listen to, to and watch the fingerwork, the way he tucks the pick into the crook of his middle finger, is just amazing to me. This is a great video. jazzylover59 (again) 4/29/07 1:33 PDT

  • What a brilliant performance.
