Levine's sense of tempo seems infallible! Finch'han dal vino is a Presto, it should race, it should be percussive, and on the verge of spinning out of control, i.e exactly as it is performed here. A more relaxed delivery does not work! I so appreciate tempo choices throughout this production.

sorry, sam got his ass kicked at the end of the song. I noticed that the day this was broadcast in 1990. here, sam's all over the place. the karajan version, which IS on youtube, he stays in one place while playing off furlanetto. The vocal is full of power and he has wind to sing all night. here, the undisciplined wandering on stage does nothing to help sam with the killer of all baritone/bass arias. blame levin for that...

I always wanted to see a production where he clocks her in the mouth about halfway through this aria...haha. I kid. But so many high school girls ruin this aria, thinking it's easy, that their invitations to get beaten up are all too tempting. I love how this Masetto tries so hard to be angry, but can't.

Siepi was really good as well (voice) but never had this

power, fire, speed and passion - especially in this aria!!

I've heard them both. Allen is for me (same as Hampson) good, but not as good as Wächter. Siepi is... well one of the best singers ever, but for some reason I don't really like him ;). It's just a matter of taste.

I watched the Furtwängler DVD 3-4 times and there are just some parts I don't like as much as this one. Please don't get me wrong, Siepi was one of the best ever, for many other (including yourself) the best Don Giovanni, but I simply prefer the other two. For me he sounds too serious. I don't believe that he really IS DG, it's "just" acting and singing (although on a very high level).
