I lived in Tamarama/Bondi, and when you're on the beach and all of a sudden the lifeguards go out in a boat or jet ski and start doing doughnuts around something its usually a shark. A chopper will arrive about 10 minutes later but you know it's time to go sit on the beach for a few minutes.

I saw a shark once at Bondi. It was about 15 years ago. I was paddling on a cool-lite at North end when it swam right underneath me. It was definitely a shark coz its fins were unmistakable. It was so close I could have jumped off and grabbed it! Oh, except did I mention that it was 3 feet long.... pffahahaha. Just a baby.

Just as a physical barrier that the shark`s and the like`s thereof may notice, and try to avoid..i think?! Don`t you watch Bondi ;-) I am from Scandinavia, and we don`t get too much quality time our beaches. Too cold. I know i would never have entered the water where i knew sharks roamed. I have too much to live for ;-)

@simlishcr0ft I`m pretty sure the general idea here is to have an obstacle in the way of sharks cruising towards the beach, and somehow hope that they will just cruise on by and be on their merry way. So no..i would not consider these net`s a good safety precaution in preventing sharks from coming in close to the shores of Bondi beach. They are just for show i think.. When i think of a shark net, i think of a net that is physically denying the shark passage to the other side of the net.

well...i just came back from sharks cove (oahu, hawaii) and I saw a few sharks while surfing, hammerheads as a matter of fact, they're there everyday. thing is...sharks rarely bite humans, and even when they do bit, its very unlikely that they take much away with them. For example, when my uncle was bitten, all he lost was a little piece of his foot, which grew back in a few weeks. He didn't even stop surfing that day. But then again....we are a little crazy when it comes to surfing in hawaii...
