I remember the first time I heard this song. I was 7 and I'd pinched a tape from my Dad to play on my new tape player. I wore the tape out and I cry every time I hear it. I love to sing this, it's such a powerful true and vital message.
May God forgive us all, for I fear that in the future, when we are poorer and wiser for the loss of our fellow creatures, we shall never be able to forgive ourselves.
We burried my father to this. He loved the Dubliners for decades and we have been to every tour in Germany. He used to sing this song to me when I was little.
great song. can anybody tells me why yankees and beefeaters killed all them whales back in the 19th century to light their candles, almost bringin them to extinction, and are now judging those who kill a few
I can hardly bear to hear this song - when I heard it first in a concert I cried - along with most of the audience. It is so incredibly beautiful and so sad....I love it.
I love the words to this song by Andy Barnes as it is so sad that the Japanese fishing industry continues to slaughter these beautiful mammals for their oil, meat and whalebones. They claim it is for scientific research but most of the whale meat ends up being consumed in restaurants. This song makes me feel guilty being a human being and this song told from a lone surviving whales point of view brings tears to my eyes. I know nothing about Andy Barnes so is there anyone who can tell me about him
oh this is SO sad, he does sound quite mournful. thanks Sir for the share I had never hrerd this one before, its lovely but sure gets the point across.
"what race will be next in line, all for the slaughter..the elephant or the seal, or your sons and daughters".......That line gives me the shivers every time i hear it.
When I was young my parents and sisters and I went on holiday to England every year and there was a drunk Irish guy on the camping who sang this song in the evening, on a little stage. I couldn't understand everything back then but I really got this song. I always cried my eyes out.
a great song. Sean is just as good as Luke, Jim, Paddy and Patsy and all the others. you cant compare. i played this all day long when i first heard it over 20 years ago and its still as good today.
I also cried when I heard this for the first time! The melody and the vocal performance are just stunning plus these extremely sad lyrics... awesome! I still drop a tear today when listening to it! Ab-so-lu-tly great song!
exactly dubliner85 and because of this he wont get the recognition he desreves, a truly great singer, incidently, the picture is from his solo album the roving journey man, which includes the first recording of a song for ireland
It's from 'Dubliners 25 year celebration'. And yes, Sean is a great singer! He is just unfortunate to have a guy called Luke Kelly as his predecessor...

The Irish Descendants, from Newfoundland, also did this. It's beautiful and heartbreaking.

Interesting that the Dubliners also do the "Greenland Whale Fishery" A juxtaposition for sure. Both great songs though

I believe that this song was written by Archie Fisher of Scotland for Greenpeace. Not positive though.

it hurts to hear this song but its one peopel need to hear.
Who could possibly justify? This isnt the 1800s there is no need to hunt whales/dolphins or any other sea mammals...

I like Seans voice alot but I'm more of a luke fan.
They all have different qualities to their voices to suit different songs.

This is such a brilliant song. It's even better on the bagpipes...check out "Last of the Great Whales" by the Royal Irish Regiment. Fantastic!
