unfortunately, it's not fake. there is even a TivoRemote app. If you've jailbroken your phone you can even type in commands using the terminal (you have to telnet into your tivo box). How does this work? Tivo processes the TV data and outputs to your TV, meaning the Tivo control the channel and recording and uses your TV as a monitor. Usually, the TV hardware does the processing. Because Tivo is literally a computer, if you can access it, you can issue commands and thus control your TV.
