To be honest only the original Alien film was scary, even though Aliens is good as a action flick but I think the Alien series should have stayed in the horror route, all the other sequels are a pile of mess. However the good news is Ridley Scott or directed the original film is bring out Prometheus which is a prequel to Alien.

1:45 well, women have to put up with that shit, and they're quite happy. Personally, I would NEVER have kids if I were a woman, for realz? a living person inside you? are you kidding me?
@MaggogZ yeah but we are talking about something thats not gonna naturally (dont get me wrong i've seen how "natural" giving birth looks) come out of a hole in your body , but its gonna chew a new hole in your body right where your major organs are.
I remember, my father only watched this horror film, he was a police man, he said: "Okay, time to sleep, I have to work", but when he saw, Alien will be on TV, he said. "Okay after this movie, every one go to bed!"
Besides following the slasher genre rules, "Alien" is essentially a haunted house movie in outer space (they've even got Harry Dean Stanton going "Here kitty kitty kitty" at one point). And it answer the age old question of haunted house flicks, which is, "Why don't they just get out of the house?" Well, in space, there's no place to go.
yes, i always think of samus as nintendo's ripley. No matter how many times she tries to kill her aliens off, they always seem to come back the next game...or movie...
I prefer the second one to be honest, and James, come on, the original Halloween is MORE than just a slasher flick, not only did it lay down the rules for slasher films, it was a fucking masterpiece, the second greatest horror film of all-time behind Texas Chainsaw Massacre of course.
Did you know when they were filming the part where the alien came out of the first person, they didn't put it in the script. Those were their actual reactions!
Yeah. The characters are so thin in Alien, they didn't need to do a lot to scare audiences. You've got a character (Brett) that says, "Right" every five seconds. Aside from "Here, kitty, kitty," that is the most he says. lol
Cameron gave us some creepy images, some iconic lines and some truly great characters... while taking us on the most awesome, brutal roller coaster ride. What more do you want in a film?? As far as I know, you honestly can't get much more.
@LukeLovesRose I prefer the sense of creeping horror you get in Alien plus Giger's nightmarish design work for his monster which the Cameron film just doesn't come close to for me at least.
The Cameron film is a little too rah rah ramboesque machismo for my taste and has none of the building terror of the original chest burster scene or Ash's decapitation bit and Ripley discovering the Alien in the escape pod. Cameron's film is a good shoot 'em up but for horror give me Scott & Giger's film
I love the feeling of tension and creepiness in a movie... if and when the film actually pulls it off. A lot of filmmakers can't do it. And, for the first times I saw Alien, yes, the movie affected me a lot. But, after so long, you begin to see everything for what it is and you know exactly when that Alien is going to pop out from. It loses the tension and mystery in repeat viewing. And truly great films can't lose their luster after 100 times IMO. Aliens is timeless. Alien is not IMO.
@LukeLovesRose Yes well for me Alien and Blade Runner are the Science Fiction and Horror highlights of their era and both films are masterpieces, Plus Giger's mixture of the organic and the mechanical in his monster and his sets doesn't date unlike Cameron's Aliens with it's rah rah shoot 'em up and let god sort it out fest, not to mention the alpha mother bitchfest battle which for me got cliched about the fifth time I saw it. we're just going to have to agree to disagree about Alien VS Aliens
the first time I saw the chestburster scene, I was around 8 years old. it was around Christmas and FX wass showing the new director's cut over and over. I wass eating Scicilian Pizza. it was not all that enjoyable of an experience, as you can well imagine.
also, thumbs up if you agree that James should review all of the Alien movies (Alien to either AvP:R or Prometheus) in depth
Most late '70s sci-fi blockbusters were big-budget remakes of older stuff. Star Wars owes a lot to the Kirosawa film Hidden Fortress along with some westerns and serials, Superman was just the origin with a random scheme for him to foil, Star Trek: the Motion Picture had a lot of the same themes as the episode "the Changeling," the Black Hole was more-or-less "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" in space (or so I'm told) and Moonraker was pretty much just Thunderball in space.
@yodawithsunglasses aside from the terrifying creature, the ideas in it are horrifying themselves. in a slasher flick, you could always just leave the house. this is a spaceship, no way out. not to mention, if you die, it's one of two ways: one, you're ripped apart by this monster, or two, you are mouth raped and forcibly give birth to ANOTHER monster. even if you don't find the monster scary, put yourself in the character's shoes, and it becomes flat out terrifying.
@SonicSnail95 your right im just saying that i am not afraid of this movie if i were ripley then i would be terrified but as a movie viewer im not scared
@xIegionx To be fair, we know that now. But when I posted this comment he hadn't announced "sequel - a thon" So as far as anyone knew, it could have just been another horror anthology
People keep saying that "Alien" is a science fiction movie, but really its not its a monster movie--imagine if you took "The Old Dark House" with a monster on the loose.
Imma say it right now. Dead Space sucks ass. Its a ripoff of the Space Horror genre, which isnt bad but comparing it to ALIEN just = fail. Don't get me wrong, Dead Space has its own appeal, just like the ALIEN series and the alien movies before it. The only problem is it blends SO MUCH from movies like ALIEN and others like it that it just turns into one big Movie mash that I would rather watch. However, after Alien3, the Alien series started sucking as well.
