Bill owns a hay farm and a giant tractor. It's great how the band pull from each other and put that energy back into the show. You can tell they really respect each other as friends and musicians. Could only wish I had great friends like these.
this is the one that hooked me when my drummer brought the EP of Chronic Town to practice...and I was like "we may as well fucking give up" Its importance was plain to me then, not like Im some sort of know it all, but I knew we wouldnt match them on our best day when I heard this song, Wolves, Lower and Gardening at Night
I've known this band since club days. Nice remembering the college age club REM before Stipe got all serious and they played arenas and all the fun went away, along with songwriting talent.
Back in college in around '86 I did a road trip with some folks from Madison, Wisconsin (U. of W.) to OSU in Columbus listening to Chronic Town the whole way, and the whole way back. It was a shitty trip (didn't sleep for 36 hours), but the music was awesome!
Same here. This is probably the first band I REALLY took seriously (at age 16). I had a friend in college who still liked stuff like Madonna and Thompson Twins until he heard REM.
Bless you. I've watched all of your videos, and this classic R.E.M. is like an early birthday present :) I've been hopelessly obsessed with this band since I was a kid. This is the first song of theirs that I ever heard. Too classic!
UP should have been their last. It would have been perfect. Instead they are just mulling about in the studio and performing "greatest hits" tours a la U2.
This is great though! Love Chronic Town EP and Murmur. Thank you!
In a way I agree, UP was my first album, and from then I just went backwards in R.E.M.'s history, and I liked what I heard with every "new" old cd I bought...
To me the newer stuff has lost alot of it's energy, but that's what seems to happen to every band in time... like metallica or the red hot chili peppers ...
I agree with you that the last couple of R.E.M. albums are not their very best, although I still really enjoy a couple of songs on every new album.
Hopefully the upcoming album will contain more guitarwork from Peter Buck. I think he's one of the most underrated guitarplayers in rockmusic, and he's absolutely fantastic. Very diverse.
Thank you for posting this. What a great version of the first R.E.M. song I ever heard. I've been a fan ever since and I saw them in NJ that year. This was great.
I'd like to know what he's on and find some. He's still got all the words and the passion though. He obviously lived that music which is why he is so compelling in the early days.
God, youth is so fleeting. Do something with it while you can.
Bill Berry is REALLY good and quite underrated. R.E.M. went to the dumper when he left. Even the mysterious low harmonies Bill does on "are pullin" here are never to be mimicked. Never again. Miss Bill.
I love Bill Berry, I think he's the best. Still, R.E.M. did not go "to the dumper" after the inevitable though unfortunate departure of Mr. Berry, they just changed because a huge important part that had always been there had gone away. That said, granted, since then their music has taken some strange turns but that isn't automatically bad. Their my favorite band and always will be, I say that with ALL their records in mind.
@gillart he is quite the under rated drummer I agree. I always loved his rare backing vocal on various songs. How bout his "it's goin' to fall" on Fall On Me, or "dreams they compliment my life" from Get Up!
@gillart I want to work on Bill's peanut farm... really, how cool would that be? I would stare at his uni-brow and harvest nuts and drink a beer with him at the end of the day... I can imagine me saying things like, "Hey Bill, you wanna come over and jam tonight? Some of us are getting together...
@gillart They should have broke up when Bill left, R.E.M. was my favorite band growing up in the 80s, I don't ever recognize them anymore. I love watching the old clips though.

Mike Mills would be the lead singer in any other band.

Until I downloaded the lyrics (25 years after I bought the EP) I thought "Chronic town, poster torn, reaping wheel..."
was "Chronic town, busted jaw, weeping will..."

Seeing Stipe in this video makes me wonder if Eddie Vedder was heavily influenced or just has the same reaction when performing.
I do like the edgy REM of old. I appreciate the talent of their newer mellow stuff but doesn't appeal at all.

I wasn't expecting the scream either, but after watching the video a few more times, I think it's a nice addition in a strange way.

it's a tricky process, I did it a while ago and put them on dvd, just google download youtube and it'll show you various programs you can use.
The most difficult thing is changing the format to avi.
