There is a much much easier way if you're running windows and only want to resize.
Download The windows power toy "Image Resizer" which will add an option to the right-click menu called "Resize Pictures". If you select 1 or more pics and click "Risize Pictures" you can select several default sizes to fit into (like 640X480) as well as a custom size field and it will create a copy of the images for you. Click-click-done.
I've used that before but it doesn't always work and has a tendency to act buggy (especially with images of varying lengths and widths). It's a good PowerToy but not the most stable thing in the world.
Your tutorial really helped. I had not heard of GIMP before and found this picture tool extremely useful. Thanks.
