Bowie is one of the few musical geniuses ever to appear on the rock stage, he wrote music that was unpredictable and always surprised us with his choice of musicians and musical directions. He hardly ever sang a flat or sharp note live and had an amazing sense of expression and rhythm to his singing style. You can’t expect a genius like that to be normal act normal or even dress normal, there is nothing normal about him; maybe that’s why we love to watch him and listen to his music.
@8BlueSkies The song is "Sweet Thing". Written by David Bowie for the album Diamond Dogs in 1974. The song is split in two with "Candidate" in the middle. In the opening line, Sweet Thing contains the lowest note Bowie ever recorded in a studio album (C2).
@kwijibomonkey That's good knowledge! And that is awfully low. I'm finally getting around the the post 73 records and I'm noticing how the substance abuse affected Bowie's voice. It certainly changed in 1974-76. Presley's voice is another interesting example. All of the downers and pain killers he was doing by 1975 really affected his voice greatly. Long live Bowie...
Bowie always seems so collected and cool but he has (had?) a brother who had schizophrenia and he probably was terrified he'd be schizophrenic also (it's inherited and often shows up in early adulthood). He really was a basket case at this time but hid it so well. He really is a true entertainer and more-so a cracked actor.
i think my favorite part about bowie is his entire sustenance throughout the seventies was cocaine and milk. the cocaine you can understand, but cocaine and milk?
@songcycle Yes, cocaine & milk, this is why they called him the White Duke. I think he gave up hard drugs in 76’ or 77’, if he hadn’t done it he would have died and he would have remained as another dead legend.
I know he's coked up but he looks so cool singing "cracked actor" and the showmanship and the lights following him makes it look like a really cool show I wouldn't mind watching. When he sings "time" that is painful to watch.
The entire Diamond Dogs album/CD was phenomenal! So was the concert. I attended the concert in Charleston WV at the Civic Center. It was a great show! But the album contains the original Rebel Rebel. Now I don't know if it's true or not, so I am not going to swear by it but, just before the album was released, it was said that Rebel Rebel was Bowies solo song. He supposedly played every instrument on that song. No help from anyone else. Buy the CD. It's worth it.
HAIL THE GOLDEN BOW FOR SNORTING UP ALL THE MONEY THAT COLUMBIA RECORDS STOLE, GULLED,
DUPED, AND FUNNEL'D AWAY FROM OVERLY-TRUSTING MUSICIANS, ESPECIALLY THE BLACK BLUES PLAYERS (at least someone got revenge and got high----lovely, life-affirming duo-polis...)
Could someone tell me what song David sings starting at 3:58? It is truly a wonderful song, and the way he sings it is so very theatrical. Could be on broadway.
Check out the Part 2 Cracked Actor of David Bowie. I forgot to do this as a reply but thought I'd give you a little info. But, yes the song you're interested in is called Sweet Thing from the Diamond Dogs album. But check out the comment again concerning Rebel Rebel
Its uncanny how skillfully the BBC managed to capture the mood of the artist and period so well. Possibly my favouite rock documentary. A work of art in itself
at 2:44 he totally trips out cause he's beamed up and thinks he's getting pulled over. he snorts hard and everything. I wish he kept this look until the serious moonlight phase. No eyebrows!
aaron I agree with you! Did it have anything to do with Angie being gone, his artistic luster just kind of plummeted somehow after this phase, or maybe he got off drugs and changed course when Heroes was released. I love the man of course.
Does anybody knows where can I download the audio of this version of "cracked actor"? I think it is the best version of this song, how I love that organ!
I'm glad he doesn't like LA.

def. one of the best rock documentarys of all time. Bowie says he can't watch it himself. But it's absolutely fascinating.

Looks like he made good use of his time at the wax museum tour he took - enlightening this world to the absurdities od real life in la la land - ha!
