Looks so humble yet plays with such authority AND makes it look so easy. Listened to Hendrix, Paige, Lifeson, Morse and loads of others in the 80's,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,think i've found 2011's inspiration and person to derive influence from for improving my own guitar playing }:-))
I'm learning this song for an audition to get into a music school. I play the melody and then the chords. I didn't know it was possible to play both at the same time, i've starting to stress now haha. You are amazing sir.
Man you're sooo incredibly good I had to come back and show some of my "colleagues" your vids just so they know what excellence sounds like! I think they are all huddled in a corner afraid of your greatness! Lol! We here in Hawaii are very very much in awe of your skills! Thank you again for sharing! =)
ROFL...Yeah, those food crumbs on my sweater have that hypnotic effect on me too. Well, at least now I look in the mirror before shooting a video. Thanks... ;-)
great timing. playing a tune via chord melody is great, but having great time is the key to gettint noticed. Thank u for taking on the challenge. best wishes, jesse abarca . jesbark123@yahoo.com
I was impressed by the fact that your playing a relatively cheap guitar by most jazz player standards...Goes to show ya it's in the meat, soul and bone of the player ..Mind me asking what you gave for that guitar?
Thanks! If you call pieces breaking and falling off then yes, the guitar is certainly modified... ;-) Also, I have a Fishman transducer at the bridge I blend in a little.
jake, you sound so nice! please, be so kind tell me what type or model of a Fishman transducer you use? I don't have any idea of them...Bestest of the best regards,
sincere congratulations, it is almost impossible in solo jazzguitar to maintain the rythmic pulse and play interesting harmony simultaneously, but you do it .
Well folks, since all of you dig Jake so much, why don't you come down to The Earle in Ann Arbor most Wednesdays from 7 to 9 PM and hear him live. He's even better live.
I probably shouldn't write that since if all the people he deserves to appreciate him go, I'll have to get there earlier than usual :-)
Thanks, 18 years at The Earle and going... :-) If we could get 4-8 additional people every week, that would be great, and no chance running out of space on a Wednesday evening!
This may be a slightly irrelevant to say, but there are elements in your playing, here, which immediately remind my ears of Jim Hall's wonderful playing on Angel Eyes, on his Live! album, which I love to listen to over and over and over . . .
Thanks! I am not familiar with the Jim Hall recording (I will check it out!) but the two tunes have, in fact, remarkably similar chord changes throughout them. Even the lyrics address roughly similar topics evoking a similar dark atmosphere (maybe a bit darker on Angel Eyes)... The forms are different though, ABA vs AABA.
10/10 Man this is an incredible version of the song. I've listened to a ton of them on youtube and yours is by far the best. The others on just guitar seem to be missing without the other instruments with them yet your style rounds out the songs and fills the gaps and makes it feel whole
What the Fuk Just happened here ???That's a Guitar demon playin !!!!! I dont have words Jake.. out of this world.. !!!! Tell me you're not chewing gum while doing that.. I would want to touch my guitar after this.. wow..
Thanks! I perform for a living (such as it is...), restaurants, cocktails patries, weddings... Mostly solo but I also have several groups. I have several excellent trio videos on my channel, please take a look. Thanks again!
looks like you removed the brige pickup and added something to the tailpiece. whatever you did it sounds good. also the sound quality has improved vastly since the earlier videos.
Thanks. There was no real "inception", I just started playing it and as time went on things took shape. But that shape still keeps changing, I don't play things exactly the same way every time.
Hi Jake, I would like to aquire an instructional video of - This Masquerade please - I am willing to pay all expenses but I live in Auckland New Zealand. Thanks so much for your request! I have sent you a detailed reply through your channel, please take a look. Meanwhile, please say hello to my friend James Sneed, distinguished math professor at your main university, and fiddler extraordinaire!
Wow! Fine guitarist. You play so clear and simple (apparently). Your style encourages and inspires to everybody who hear you to work on and practice. Thanks for sharing a happy time.
In your hands, that instrument becomes much more than just a guitar!
This is a weird question, but how are your right hand fingernails shaped? I have long, filed nails for classical guitar, and am thinking they may lend themselves well to your style, which I am now trying to learn.
Anyway if youtube would let us give more than 5 stars, I would! Bravo!
Thank you! I actually use acrylic nails, I get them done at a regular nail place for about $15 every 4-6 weeks. They are very strong and hard and ever since I started getting them, a few years back, my playing has really improved and my dynamic range grew because I can now play not only soft, as before, but also very hard which I could not before. I hope this helps!
I like your style. Interesting choice of key. F minor. Is that the sheet music key? I am a baritone and I always sang this song in C minor. When I was doing this song was during my keyboard period. I still play the keyboard but I am focused on guitar now and I subscribe to guitarists that I believe I can learn from. That's why I subscribed to you. I look forward to hearing more of your excellant and inspiring playing.
Thanks! I don't know about the sheet music but on any gig, and with anybody I've ever played this tune it's always been F- so it's just a matter of habit for me. It's also George Benson's key, BTW. I guess that makes it the standard key for this song but of course it can be played in any key.
