I'm a long time diver and a lover of nature and animals, and to adress all of the hippies on this page, I for one would use the knife I always carry to stab the friken crap out of that octopus. Nature is brutal, vicious, and beautiful. If it's between me or any other animal, I am going to use my superior human intellect and kill it. Also, that guy should not have been swimming so close to such a large opening. He kind of had it coming for at least a moray eel to bite him.

However, I admit that if I see something really cool, I will take it just like any of my hikes or climbs. But very rarely. It is not a good thing to touch anything when diving. Even still, accidents occur and I am also a trained warrior. I will fight back when attacked and even kill. There's nothing wrong with that.

As a diver myself, what about taking the regulator and shove it into the octo's mouth, making it freeflow (providing you aren't down to 500 psi) - it may scare it enough to get away - I'm sure it was all you could do just to manage to get away. Good job of maintaining your cool, man!
