the man playing the bones becomes as a marionette: loose jointed, flowing across the space he dances within. These guys are amazing! Jaw dropping talent and interpretation.
What is so hard to understand? Three talented musicians reviving an under-appreciated aspect of African-American music. Listen with your ears instead of our preconceptions, and maybe you won't feel the need to laugh.
I may be remembering this wrong, but I think I read or heard an interview where Rhiannon said this is an old song which they found, and the folklorist who collected it had titled it "Genuine Negro Jig."
i cant for the life of me remember what its called but the instrument he is playing is basically two hollowed out peices of oak or various wood bound together by a metal coil much like one of those hand work out things with a really loose spring. i could be wrong but ive played with people who used something like that that sounded just like it.
@LiveFastDieKrunk They don't always have a spring or something holding them together. It's like playing the spoons; they are held with a finger between them as a fulcrum, and the technique is all about how you move your hands to control they way they flop against each other.
this belongs in a tim burton film.

Seems so mournful for a jig... I despise this country's history.

@twygally I think it's 4/4 count, not a real jig. And it's D minor that's the 'mournful' key. This is G minor, the ass-kicking key!
thalohalo 3 months ago
@thalohalo If D minor is the mournful key, wtf is A minor?
