i cant for the life of me remember what its called but the instrument he is playing is basically two hollowed out peices of oak or various wood bound together by a metal coil much like one of those hand work out things with a really loose spring. i could be wrong but ive played with people who used something like that that sounded just like it.

@LiveFastDieKrunk They don't always have a spring or something holding them together. It's like playing the spoons; they are held with a finger between them as a fulcrum, and the technique is all about how you move your hands to control they way they flop against each other.
