This scene is so Goddamn beautiful... I have heard many renditions of the Internationale in many different languages, but this one is really the most moving. Even though they're just acting, it perfectly conveys everything the song stands for.
Stalinists killed the revolution....we must have a united front against capitalism state capitalism and facism...against all forms of the oppression and suppression of the working class.....so one day we can have a true democratic society and true marxist communism
Socialism and Communism never works as intended. In both ideology's the mandatory division of power and movement of wealth to a more equal distribution, requires a large and powerful government to enforce. A powerful government is always doomed to become a totalitarian government simply because of the sheer size of it, for power always corrupts. Also the very concept of having the peoples welfare come first, unintentionally dooms them to a type of serfdom to the state.
The state, or the body of government will always be a representation of the people as whole, therefore the individual is reduced to an asset to maintain the welfare of the populace/state as a whole. Therefore by focusing on the welfare of all the people one must take away the importance of the individual person. And as I said previously the only way to accomplish this is to have a totalitarian government to enforce it, for there will always be someone who doesn't want to play the game.
That's state socialism, or as many call it "state capitalism" such as it is in China right now, socialism in the classical sense does not imply state ownership of the means of production, if we involve the state in distributing wealth and owning all means of production then we defeat very purpose of socialism. Socialism meant until the rise of Leninism, democratic workers control over the means of production and distribution, you should google something called "libertarian socialism".
@LMGunslinger As opposed to the perpetual warfare, draconian security state, growing poverty, extreme inequality, and squandering of natural resources that all indicate that the more important issue is that capitalism either doesn't work as intended, or (more likely) works all too well. Either way, the option that at least shoots for solidarity and cooperation instead of backstabbing and cut-throat competition seems a whole lot more appealing (and rational) at this point.
fascism and communism are both as messed up and evil as each other, history seems to have forgotten the 100 million slaughtered in the name of communism or the fact that hitler was in the nationalist socialist workers party

@reformationposttlc Your 100% but it's not just now the free world has been murdering people for thousands and thousands of years now. @fasola255 Your a fool yourself, because you aparently no idea what this scene or the whole movie is about. These are soldiers of the POUM, a left-communist, dissident batallion in the Spanish civil war. The POUM heavily criticized Soviet communism and were all murder by stalinists in the end. No left-communist would deny the crimes of the Soviet Union. In fact, they probably know better about it than you.

Vive La Republica! If only the Republic of Spain had been victorious, they were well on their way on building a non-Stalinist socialist utopia, and getting rid of all of those bloody fake men of the cloth and landowners who treated their workers like mules and packhorses.
It's really confusing yes! but the spanish civil war was very confusing war. Fascist militia of Falange used the red and black colours too in his flags because they allude to the working class revolution and his national-sindicalism shit... etc etc
Anbd of course! in that time, the anarchist militias of CNT-FAI fought with another militias POUM, UHP, UGT.... a lot of different ideologies to beat fascism
I love this movie so much, one of the best films to come out in recent years. My only objection to this film is the negative portrayal of the international brigades, but other than that, this was a fantastic movie.
Ken Loach refused the advice of the International Brigade Association in the making of the film. The IBA is the organisation that represented British anti-fascist veterans of the the war (several thousand of them).
Instead, his fairytale suggests that many British fought with the POUM and anarchists (in fact, there were perhaps just 20-30).
One of these was George Orwell, who worked for British intelligence post-1945 - spying on leftists in the UK.
If Loach refused the advice of the International Brigade Association, it was surely because he wanted to put the accent in the internal conflict caused by Stalin among republican forces(his manipulation of the spanish communist party and his betrayal to the spanish revolution).
This is the essence of the film and it is an historical true that has to be told!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That Loach made a film about the conflict between the POUM and the Spanish Republican government exposes his true agenda.
He was not interested in documenting the broad anti-fascist struggle, merely in using the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War to promote his subjective view on the role of "Stalinism".
He crudely depicts international brigaders as either dupes of Stalin or ruthless "Stalinists" themselves. The least he could have done is consult the veterans before slandering them.
Yes, I guess it was not his main purpose to document the "broad" anti-fascist struggle in Spain. Today we know that it was an international error not to help the spanish "democratic" government in this struggle against fascism. Who knows? May be they could have avoided the II World War. Of course, the brigadists had already understood the importance of the conflict much earlier and better than the western "democratic" governments!
I am sorry, may be it is because I am Spanish, I do not see that he depicts brigaders as "stalinists". He does not even say that of communists in general. The protagonist himself is a communist!
He did consult veterans. There were a lot of veterans (spanish and from abroad) fighting although they were not recluted in the IB.
This film opened a great debate in Spain. After 40 years of fascist dictature(and propaganda) and the democratic transition in silence it was good to see this film.Saludos
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
For Ken Loach a Communist = a Stalinist. The main character quits the British communist party. That is why he is Loach's hero.
I have had the privilege of meeting British (and Irish) anti-fascist veterans over the years. I have attended the annual International Brigade Association commemoration in London several times.
I have never met a veteran who had anything but contempt for Land and Freedom.
Loach slanders them as (at best) dupes of evil Joe Stalin. Disgusting. These people were heroes.
The reason he didn't listen to the veterans of the International Brigades was because the story is not about them, it is about the POUM. It is irrelevant how many Brits fought with the POUM. Nowhere does Loach suggest that most Brits fought with the POUM, you are entirely imagining that.
The reason you object to this film is that it doesn't glorify the International Brigades. Criticizing the anti-revolutionary communist leadership is not an insult to the thousands of brave volunteers.
@otleybey This movie was based on Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell. George Orwell fought with the POUM. So of course this movie is going to focus on the POUM.
buenas alba, en el libro de george orwell "homenaje a cataluña", si, el luxa en el P.O.U.M., pero kreo rekordar que en la peli el protagonista luxa en una seccion anarkista.
(Oh, and one more thing tino, The Illuminatti ceased to exist over 200 years ago. They were just six pissed off Germans who didn't like Europe's monarchies. You might have liked them. There is no grand conspiracy, no world state. It's all just paranioa and prejudice.)
Most of the American media hates George Bush, and would rather talk about Anna Nicole Smith's tits than about the Third World War we're fighting. And when they do talk about it, they never mention the sacrifices made or the good that America's troops really do in hell holes like Iraq and Afghanistan. I think your countries' media has been jerking you around just as much as my country's media has been jerking me around.)
ask the irakian people what "good" american troops have made... are U going to talk about the "goodness" of the Vietnam war? all these war are for american interests...
Oh boy, here we go...Vietnam was stupid. We stabbed Ho Chi Mihn in the back, a great man who admired American principles. Instead we fought for the corrupt South Vietnamese government. But don't try to pin the horrors of Nam on America. The VC butchered more innocent civilians than Americans ever did. Operation Phoenix was a horrible mistake. Hey, you're from Cuba, so I don't expect you to understand. (No offense, it's just we're looking at the situation from completely different viewpoints).
from Cuba uh? haha! funny guy! poor little americans! U never ever did something wrong, it was always "mistakes"... I'm not trying to victimize ho chi min, saddam hussein, or another butcher (it would be much more simple for you!)! but assume your history!! the british made atrocity in India (Cipaye rebellion), the french in Algeria, the americans in Vietnam... and now in Irak, Afghanistan and... Cuba (just read Amnesty International reports)
Never admit America did anything wrong eh? Do you knw what Operation: Pheonix was? It was a CIA backed capiagn of mass murder and terror tactics aimed at pro communist villages. I just addmitted America's responsibility for that.
Additionally, the incidents at Abu Gahrib were a case of poorly disciplined soldiers who acted outside of the chain of command for their own ammusement. America does not support toture (I can't speak for the CIA, NSA etc, as those bastards seem to live by their own rules.)Gitmo I have mixed feeling about.
the patriot act is not very clear (or clean) concerning torture...
excuse, for i wont mean to be offensive, but you said you admit what Amrica did durind OP Phoenix (CIA), and then you make a distinction America/CIA, NSA...
and OP Phoenix was not the only dirty thing that happened in Nam
This was a great film. I remember waking up at like 6 am and watching this on the Sundance channel, and it just blew me away. A fabulous film about a passionate yet oft forgotten conflict.
(And a note to everyone here ranting about how George Bush has alleadgely used the media to control america. Question: What planet have you been living onthe past two years?)
"we are leaving them in the earth- but now this part of earth is ours, -the struggle is large, and they are many, but we will always be many more!" Long live the working class

Land and Freedom is a work of fiction.
Sohemian 4 years ago
It is not a work of fiction!

Sohemian 3 years ago
Yes, I guess it was not his main purpose to document the "broad" anti-fascist struggle in Spain. Today we know that it was an international error not to help the spanish "democratic" government in this struggle against fascism. Who knows? May be they could have avoided the II World War. Of course, the brigadists had already understood the importance of the conflict much earlier and better than the western "democratic" governments!
alba0104 3 years ago 2
I am sorry, may be it is because I am Spanish, I do not see that he depicts brigaders as "stalinists". He does not even say that of communists in general. The protagonist himself is a communist!
He did consult veterans. There were a lot of veterans (spanish and from abroad) fighting although they were not recluted in the IB.
This film opened a great debate in Spain. After 40 years of fascist dictature(and propaganda) and the democratic transition in silence it was good to see this film.Saludos

Sohemian 3 years ago
Yeah, I think you have a point. Orwell didn't write about them being that way at all.
KafkaCrow 3 years ago
The brigadists were most of them communists, so their advise would not be very helpful to tell this part of the story.
If the British fighters with the POUM and anarchists were 20 or 200, it doesn`t really matter.
And you should not forgett the enormous importance of the anarchist movement in Spain and this TRUE is also part of the film.
But do not understand me wrong...I would NEVER say a word against the International Brigades. We will never forgett them. They are in our hearts.
alba0104 4 years ago 4
stalinist revisionist. you are in fairy tale land
limebloom 3 years ago 2
The reason he didn't listen to the veterans of the International Brigades was because the story is not about them, it is about the POUM. It is irrelevant how many Brits fought with the POUM. Nowhere does Loach suggest that most Brits fought with the POUM, you are entirely imagining that.
The reason you object to this film is that it doesn't glorify the International Brigades. Criticizing the anti-revolutionary communist leadership is not an insult to the thousands of brave volunteers.

Yes, and the USSR's betrayal of POUM was what turned him against Stalinist thought and provided the first seeds of what became "1984".

@otleybey This movie was based on Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell. George Orwell fought with the POUM. So of course this movie is going to focus on the POUM.

HazMatMedia 4 years ago
ask the irakian people what "good" american troops have made... are U going to talk about the "goodness" of the Vietnam war? all these war are for american interests...
bidultrucmuche 4 years ago 2
Oh boy, here we go...Vietnam was stupid. We stabbed Ho Chi Mihn in the back, a great man who admired American principles. Instead we fought for the corrupt South Vietnamese government. But don't try to pin the horrors of Nam on America. The VC butchered more innocent civilians than Americans ever did. Operation Phoenix was a horrible mistake. Hey, you're from Cuba, so I don't expect you to understand. (No offense, it's just we're looking at the situation from completely different viewpoints).
HazMatMedia 4 years ago
from Cuba uh? haha! funny guy! poor little americans! Cuba (just read Amnesty International reports)
bidultrucmuche 4 years ago 2
Never admit America did anything wrong eh? Do you knw what Operation: Pheonix was? It was a CIA backed capiagn of mass murder and terror tactics aimed at pro communist villages. I just addmitted America's responsibility for that.
HazMatMedia 4 years ago
Additionally, the incidents at Abu Gahrib were a case of poorly disciplined soldiers who acted outside of the chain of command for their own ammusement. America does not support toture (I can't speak for the CIA, NSA etc, as those bastards seem to live by their own rules.)Gitmo I have mixed feeling about.
HazMatMedia 4 years ago
the patriot act is not very clear (or clean) concerning torture...
excuse, for i wont mean to be offensive, but you said you admit what Amrica did durind OP Phoenix (CIA), and then you make a distinction America/CIA, NSA...
and OP Phoenix was not the only dirty thing that happened in Nam

(And a note to everyone here ranting about how George Bush has alleadgely used the media to control america. Question: What planet have you been living onthe past two years?)
