How is it possible to hear this song, an anti-apartheid theme, and think "HEY THIS WOULD BE GREAT FOR A YOGURT COMMERCIAL". Like what the fuck, advertising people. Seriously.
my nan was born 1938, she was mixed race, this was her anthem, i say was because she has passed.. this so reminds me of growing up in southafrican sunshine ahhh lifetime supply of vitamin d
Oh the ANC he ruins a country they runs in Pretoria and the Eastern Cape they only cares about few people he don't give a damn about the rest While every mother in black Shoshangwe is begging for water and electricty the ANC is partying with diamonds and gold even the archbishop is a peaceful man says the service delivery protestors will overcome the very strong I want to know if you dumb joana if you want to see another Arab spring can't you see the tide is turning
it took me a while to find out that joanna is actually johannesburg (...she runs the country, ...in a black soweto) nevertheless, the lyrics are so powerfull and meaningfull
@gospodinPipi i dont think joanna is jo'burg i cant find any resource to support that it was the seat of apartheid power and i inst one of the 3 capital cities now just the biggest in sa
@highrhino According to wikipedia "Gimme Hope Jo'anna" is a song originally by Eddy Grant, a well-known anti-apartheid reggae anthem from the 1980s, written during the apartheid era in South Africa.
@highrhino I am South African and was born and raised in Johannesburg. Johannesburg is also known as "Joeys" or "Joburg" or "Egoli" (Zulu name for "gold" which is where gold was discovered) and this song Joanna refers to Johannesburg which is the largest city in South Africa and was during the apartheid era the centre of the anti-apartheid movement. This song was banned in SA when it was released. Inside SA, we never knew about the song until years later.
HH Shri Shri 1008 Soham Baba referred to this song in several interviews during the UNFCCC Climate Change Conference COP17 in Durban, "Give me hope Durban, give me hope Durban before the morning come". Unfortunately there came no real hope that the world leaders will act on short term to stop global warming. It's a shame that the speech from a 13 year old girl about Climate Change at UN Conference June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro is after 19 years still very actual!
eddie grant, in this song, seemed to be years ahead of his time. it appears that when he mentions 'JOANNA" he is talking about the "real" leaders of this world who will do anything to be leaders of us all. he is speaking of the new world order
@Killarney12345 There's a long way to go. There are deep structural problems that will take a generation to resolve, if the political will is there. I hope the political class is enlightened enough to do what's needed.
I'm still amazed by the relatively bloodless transition from apartheid to democracy. What Mandela and others did is truly amazing.
@g00nther Now its going back into apartheid, this time whites are to be killed. That's what the ANC has said -_-, the old south africa that mandela wanted was long fucking gone.

OMG THEY SHOULD TOTALLY PLAY THIS IN THE CLUBS INSTEAD!! :o maybe people would start growing hearts aswell again.. :o you are what you hear keep that in mind ;) give me hope jo'anna <3 :O
There was nothing wrong with apartheid, people should remember that if it wasn't for the white race colonising Africa then all the blacks would still be chucking spears around and eating each other. Blacks played no part in building it into a civilised country. It the nigs didn't like apartheid they were welcome to go back to living away from the towns and building mud huts and eating each other which is what they'd still be doing if the white man had never gone to Africa.
Eddy Grant grew up near where I live in Kentish Town, north London.went to Acland Burghley school which is 400 yards from me. When he was in The Equals in the '60s he had hair dyed white, when he went to the barber's in Kentish Town to tell him what he wanted the barber replied "Don't be a c**t"
Had a heart attack when he was young so went back and live in the Caribbean, think I read he eats about 20 mangoes a day cos he thinks they are good for your heart and "keep you regular. Ace song.
@Franckfromjapan Man ! I was like 4 years old jumping all over my small bed when listening to this song and repeating - Bi-bi-bop Joanna ! Of course I didn't know english so well back then... but still repeating the song in english... :D:D
@putty1994 hi mate sorry a friend of mine wrote that comment on my computer. i'm sure he didn't mean what he said and wrote that purely to get a reaction and to wind up youtube users. if it's any consolation i think the way that eddy grant combines a knack for writing craftily arranged pop songs with genuinely moving messages is something the industry hasn't seen in a while. i'm glad you felt the need to dispute a comment like that. i'll stress again that it wasn't me, but i appreciate ur spirit
@SashKaLakers congratulations. if you read the reply you'd realise that the initial comment wasn't left by me. I'm not white. You are an idiot. From a British-Asian who loves the music of Eddie Grant and absent-mindedly left this page open whilst having friends round.
Wow it is so soothing. At 21, was in South Pacific - Fiji, Tonga, Apia, Pago Pago, Honiara, Solomon Island etc. This song was most liked across Islanders and was often played on local / ANZ Radio. I am now 42 and whenever I hear this song - whole South Pacific comes before my eyes and give me pleasant memories. Especially when Mr. Grant performed in South Africa during closing ceremony of Cricket 20-20. All the best Mr. Eddy Grant !!!! Your fan from India PHILIP / MUMBAI / 12082011
i love this song.... i remember one time he covered redemption song, and it was brilliant... i met him a few years back in London, and when he heard my irish accent as everyone was shaking his hand in Camden Town, he started laughing and saying irish and jamaicans are brothers with different skill colours and how our accents were so similar.. real great guy, so down to earth, he even got shamed by all the people asking to take pictures. a true gentleman and genuine guy. one love!
it doesnt matter anymore... let's all just move on an confront the common threat facing us all.. Child trafficking, domestic violence, corruption of leaders, oppression and suppression of the innocent... Can I hear somebody echo "yes we can..."
@MrBrisbane97 germans = nazis? ok then: french = cowards dutch = weed smokers italians = sexual pervs swiss = low english = unfunny belgians = retards americans = uncultivated jewish = means black = lazy arabs = thieves muslim = terrorists russians = alcool addicts asians = working robots south americans = drug dealers ... do you have other "smarts and very constructive" things like these to share on such a video?

@totoledjay i dont know about the rest, but as an european I know for a fact that Germans are nazis and French are cowards, history proved it to be true over and over again.
