Hey I'm making a model layout that is a railyard, a turntable, and some sidings. It's supposed to be like a museum, like Steamtown National Historic Site, if you have heard of it. What would you recommend I would use as a ground cover in the yard area?
@themikester223 - It's a Southern Pacific "Cab-Forward", possibly an AC-7 or another in that series. The loco was turned around to run "backwards" so that the cab would be ahead of the exhaust steam and smoke in tunnels along the routes they were used.
I am in the process of installing my table right now and could use some help. I know very little about DCC right now (am learning), but wondering if you could give me some pointers for things I should do during the installation process to make things easy to convert for full DCC control down the road. Looks great by the way!!
never seen a tourntable in real life but its a shame when in trains magazine i get you see a roundhouse hat totally burned to the ground this month ! good job that a very detailed layout :-)
Ah well - the layout came about by me not having enough UP locos but a friend collects eastern roads and has a lot of older locs and some newer braodway ones, so we tend to run mainly Mid western but even B & O stuff appears now and again at shows. All mine is UP and some SP!
There was also a small Pennsylvania Railroad Yard in Richmond, IN. It was located on the Northeast corner of the 20th Street Bridge (that crosses the railroad tracks.) You can still see remnants of where the roundhouse and turntable pit used to be in Google Earth.
I used black and dark browns all diluted with thinners - brushed to form streaks from ouside to the centre of the well. Walls are painted light grey but looking at some old colour video think it might be white.
very beautiful

This is the nicest, most realistic layouts I've ever seen. Love the locos and the coaling tower. Great job.

Fantastic job weathering that Loco, it looks really realistic, as does the rest of the layout.

Hmm I always thought a roundhouse was specifically a radial engine shed with turntable in the middle?
Have to say it is impressive modelling regardless!
ollyk22 2 years ago
The shed is radial but they dont always go all the way round.

Depends on where exactly "midwest" is. Ohio and indiana are considered "mid-western", tons of B&O, NYC and several Pennsy lines through Ohio.
mpracing4 3 years ago
yeah i live on the border of Indiana and Ohio. There is an old Pennsy station in Richmond. Its a very cool station.

Also, the New York Central used to run in Connersville, IN (20-30 miles Southwest of Richmond.)

Fine looking Espee loco on the turntable. Nice weathering job!
Is that a Broadway AC-4? They're coming out in Blue Line soon- and although I don't model the SP, it's tempting to consider buying one.

could you upload a video of you running a train starting in the round house getting cars and going back again that would be awsome

Ah .. we do run a few other roads so friends can use their locos!!

Love the layout. I was wondering, what kind of Cab Forward is that with the vanderbilt tender. All I can find is the regular tender.

Where do the sounds come from? Does your railway run on DCC?
TimEaston 4 years ago
The sounds are in the locomotives and yes we use DCC (Digitrax system)
