  • Anyone seen the Flintstones cigarette commercial? I guess that show was for adults when it first aired.

  • @JosephHatfield no not really it just back then cigarrets wer not age prohibited by law which means any body could smoke back in the 50s and 40s

  • @TheEgyptianOne Just checked Wikipedia. Apparently the first two seasons of The Flintstones were indeed for adults only and sponsored by Winston. It was only the later seasons where the show became more family oriented.

  • Those were the times :)

  • Back in high school, I did a report on how the perception of smoking has changed in our culture. When I focused on the late-1960's, I found that much fewer people smoked when TV smoking ads ran alongside anti-smoking ads. By 1971, when smoking ads were banned on TV, they stopped making anti-smoking ads, and once again, the number of cigarettes increased drastically.

By the way, I love this jingle.

  • You have to remember that can Salem monvincire government regular.

  • So how many of those people do you think are dead or dying by now?

  • I gotta say..........I ADORED these commercials in the late 60's early 70's, and i have never smoked a cigarette in my life.

  • want to be in that jolly group....of people.is my first impression of that commiercial.. Remember when my uncle died from lung cancer .That was not so jolly.Very sad and scary.

  • I noticed there is hardly any sidestream smoke coming from these cigarettes. I wonder why. After visiting a casino recently, I find it hard to believe they'd be so happy to be in the pit of smoke these things cause. I smoked for quite a few years, but I also had the decently to walk away from other who didn't and I didn't pollute the land with cigarette butts like so many inconsiderate smokers do. Quite sickening actually!

  • Times sure have changed since the 70's.

  • lol they all smell like shit

  • These people are having fun.

If I smoke, then I will have fun too.

    Very convincing advertising.

  • So what do most people who don't smoke die from? Do they die from "Lollypop Disease"? No, most people who don't smoke still get all kinds of diseases that suck..people try to treat death as some curable illness. Just remember, most people die from some pretty crappy illnesses, and that includes people who don't smoke.

  • @Discoboy504 So what's your point...that it's OK to smoke? If I'm playing Russian Roulette and I put an extra bullet in the chamber, I've increased the odds that I may shoot myself.

  • yea we're so much healthier these days...right.... FAT AMERICA!!

  • Hold on a sec...weren't cigarette commercials on TV banned as of 1/1/1970?

  • @RedneckSpaceMan No. They were supposed to be banned on January 1, 1971, but were banned until the next day due to the Rose Bowl.

  • @PigsInBlanket Ah! Okay...you'd think I would remember it was 71 and not 70..D'OH! Salem Light 100s were my ciggie of choice, fortunately, I quit smoking back in '88.

  • I turned 16 on July 4, 1971.

  • Of course I didn't smoke Salems, it wasn't the brand approved by most doctors. I think more doctors smoked Camels than any other brand.

  • 1970: the year that I was 13 and the year that Congress yanked all the cigarette commercials off the air.

  • None of the people in this ad were available for comment, because they're all dead.

  • Anti-Tobacco Lawmaker: "The reason tobacco commercials aren't on TV is because they're addictive, deadly, and they make you think smoking makes you cool."

Background TV: "The new Bud Light Specially Designed Can will make all your friends want to come to your house and party!"

    Me: *facepalm*

  • wait til we all find out that smoking doesn't cause cancer.

  • i like it

  • I love 70s hair

  • This is back when smoking was healthy!!

  • I want to punch someone now.

  • gross!

  • The good ole days when you could light up and really enjoy a smoke without some as*hole dictating to you about the dangers of smoking.

  • @vangard213 you are not getting any thumb ups like you think you are, no one is dictating againts you when you smoke.

  • @K0ovaa1994 your obviously not from this country

  • @vangard213 yeah, man. especially this: watch?v=rziLlUteHcE

  • You Can Take Salem Out Of The Sewer But You Can't Take The Sewage Out Of Salem!

  • good ol happy days where people wern't so depressed all laughing and joking first time i seen a cig ad in a long time :)

  • Take Salem outta your country butt.

  • The good old days when people laughed and smoked and nobody bitched about it.

  • @MsThebeMoon

Yeah, and nobody talked about the cancer ward then! Happy times!

  • Smoke, drink, eat rich foods. If you have to live on ricecakes (ie; packing material) and water just to live to 100, who wants to?

  • You can't take addiction out of Salem

  • yeah now they make smoke commercials for you to stop smoking

  • Where the hell are they, a Shakey's Pizza Parlor?

  • hahahahahahahahahaha to both the top rated

  • all old timey and shit... smoke them ciggies

  • crazy, they hv a fun for smoking, earlier colored TV 1970, somestill has b&w...

  • When my sister and I were kids we use to mimic that jingle: "You can take Salem out of the country's butt-- you can't take the country out of Salem's butt!"

  • I always smoked these in my "smoking phase of life".

  • Kids think it's so weird that there were cigarette commercials back then. But we didn't have ads for liquor (only beer) or prescription medicines. I guess every generation sees stuff that's not good for you on t.v.

  • @LisaBaby67 Even though you said very little in that comment, you seriously just helped me out a whole bunch on my school paper, tyvm. lol

  • @Hedhnter LOL I hope that was a real help. If you think that's something, look up the old Playtex bra commercials from the 70s. They didn't put on borderline strip shows like the Victoria's Secret ads do now. The models actually had to wear a leotard under the bra to show how it fit. :P (And yet they had a thriving business w/out all the blatant sexuality.)

  • @LisaBaby67 Holy poo that helped so much as well, thankyousoverymuchforgivingmematerialformydetailparagraphs :D

  • @Hedhnter ROFL Anytime. I miss those days... LOL

  • I wonder how many of the died from cancer????

  • ahhhhhh sweet salems

  • now i will never smoke, looked like a rendition of oklahoma

  • "You can take Salem out of the Country but, you can't take the country our of Salem"

Seems advertisers were trying to associate menthol cigarettes w/ the idea of "fresh air" .

The names of 2 other menthol cigs ...Bel Air & Kool, kind of imply the same idea. A sharp 'fresh' intake of 'air'.

My sister use to smoke Kools (30 yrs later she's trying again to quit). I still remember the sensation, 'cool' and 'airy' come to mind. - Plus... 'Kool' as in hippy-cool... gettiing back to nature!

  • i always wondered how ppl can be stupid enough to even start smoking.now i know.these convincing ads

  • ich heise salem

  • Funny though how our government regulates cigarettes...but alcohol is ok.

Guess it's just choosing one death over another.

  • This song is too damn catchy.

  • sadly, i remember this ad all too well, though I've never smoked...1970 was the end for these ditties..

  • Everyone in this commercial...died of cancer..lungs of course.

  • @batman53092 And you know this.....HOW?

  • Drugs for white people are good for you! But don't be caught with one of them there Mary-Ju-Wana cigarettes! We'll throw yer ass in jail!

  • One of many catchy cigarette jingles. The woman at the end was Lori Saunders. She played sweet, innocent Bobby Jo Bradley on "Petticoat Junction," in the late 1960s. It's kind of shocking to see her smoking a cigarette.

  • This was my dad's brand...Salems, and Kools too. Also was my brand for a long time until I switched to the new Camel Menthol with the little ball in the filter that you can pop for the 'fresh burst of menthol'. No other menthol compares to the new Camels.

  • Light up people! It's Springtime! And let's protect our right to smoke everywhere, even indoors! Dig it?!

  • Ha! At the beginning, I thought they were at Shakey's Pizza!

  • Cigs are not healthy no one is going to deny that, but they are not as unhealthy as the gov/medical industry is making them out to be.The gov/medical industry picks out the cases where people died of lung cancer at a young age and says look he smoked and it killed him. They don't show you the even larger number of cases of people who never smoke who also die at a young age of cancer. My Dad's Dad smoked for 50 years, was a Doctor and lived well into his 90s dieing of natural causes.

  • @SJulianYZ125 my great grandfather smoked from 14 til he died at 89. He died from Mesothelioma a cancer caused by asbestos. he was exsposed to it while the head of maintence. My grandfather died from cancer (pancreatic cancer) nearly 40 years after he quit smoking. My dad's had more health issues since he quit smoking 5 years ago then he had his whole life. I've been smoking for 20 years and I'm in pretty good health (my lungs are junk, but thats from birth and they ain't any worse or better).

  • Why are all the anti-smokers commenting on a CIGARETTE commercial, go troll on a truth ad or something jesus.

  • @BrownTupperware Testy, aren't we?

  • @BrownTupperware why do you even care?

  • @BrownTupperware ...

    youtube.com/watch?v=BqqxehIV71c&feature=related...have fun,,,,,lol

  • @BrownTupperware Because some people, most often leftists, can't live without their daily shot of self-righteousness.

  • @BrownTupperware because we CAN!!!!!! live with it.

  • This was back when cigarettes were healthy.

  • @swankrecords lol

  • The girl lighting up in the "country" used to be on "Petticoat Junction" as one of the daughters of Kate Bradley, played by Bea Benederet, who incidently died of lung cancer from smoking 2-3 packs of cigs everyday!

  • I"m pretty sure the last televised cigarette commercial aired on Dec. 31, 1969.

  • @joeydangerously The last cigarette commercial aired on the Johny Carson show in 1971, it was for Virginia Slims.

  • @joeydangerously no way, tv was advertising smokes all thru the 70's at least.

  • @joeydangerously Actually, it was the night of December 31st, 1970 and early morning hours of January 1st, 1971 when the last American cigarette ads aired. But you were only off by a year.....

  • Salems are nasty, camels ftw!

  • I miss the days when cigarette smoking didn't cause cancer.

  • What exactly does country taste like?

  • I love smoking!

  • They all died at age 35

  • @luis3826

Why must you be so pessimistic?

  • My parents had parties just like this, with everyone sooo happy, and breaking out into elaborate music numbers over cigs!! Good times.

  • Not to be too "PC" but I'm pretty glad that my kid won't be marketed cigarettes from every possible medium. Sorry to disappoint your good old days utopia perspective.

  • Looks like they were at Shakey's Pizza!

  • @manidig I use to go to Shakey's when I was a kid. What part of the country did you live in where they had Shakey's? I lived in Colorado.

  • @dancinkindofguy I grew up in NY. We didn't have Shakey's but there was one in MD where my cousins lived. There's a Shakeys commercial posted here somewhere.

  • @manidig And here I thought it was a western thing.

  • Looks like you can't take the crack out of Salem either.

  • that looked like bobby jo bradley !!

  • AHHHH!! When America was truly free and people could live the way they wanted without PC big brother breathing down it's throat.

  • @OldMrMemories Isn't that the truth!!! I quit smoking a couple of years ago, but it was MY decision. I'm sick and tired of the stinking govt. telling me what to eat, drink and forcing their PC views on me.

  • @ridgerunner721601 its not only big brother its all the fucking liberal hippies that think they have to push their agenda onto other people to. I personally don't smoke but i also hate it when people tell me what NOT to do.

  • @Niflhuem I couldn't agree with you more. The pinheads are always up there yapping about cigarettes, but in the meantime they want all narcotics to be considered legal. If they want to smoke a joint, fine, I don't care. But when they start this crap about not smoking tobacco, they're sticking their collective noses in other people's business.

  • @Niflhuem Liberal hippies don't give two shits what you do. We never did.

"push their agenda" Now, where could have you possibly heard that? All political non-profits push their agendas.

  • 14 people are anti-fun and anti-community.

  • I don't need to smoke to appreciate these beautiful. Seriously, what happened to us? Is postmodern snarkers really what we've become? If this is your idea of progress, keep it; I'd rather live in 1970 than 2010. We may be a little healthier physically these days, but I suspect our mental health is worse than it was 40 years ago.

  • @AfterwardDeified

Beautiful ads, I meant to say.

  • have fun with cancer with salem

  • 14 people are made cause they can't take the country outta salem

  • @morbidangelofdeath1 LOL, good one, bro.

  • Yes, you can't take the nicotine & cancer out of Salem....

  • Smoking doesn't always kill you. Hey, even that lady who lived until 122 was a smoker.

  • i hate when someone sits and clicks those zippo lighters

  • You can't take the cancer out of Salem!

  • @stefonamus Everything gives you cancer these days...

  • I heard a take off on this ad that went "You can't take smoke out of the lungs, but you can take the lungs out of a smoker..."

  • My mom used to smoke Salem. Now she's on oxygen.

  • I remember this commercial.

  • Isn't that Terry Crews, the black fella @ 0.20, the guy that starred in White Chicks and does the Old Spice commercials? Look very closely!

  • @TSammut: I don't think so, that would have been 40 years ago....

  • It's amazing how times and people change. Then it was cool and even fashionable to smoke. Today it is not glamorous to absorb nicotine and smoke your life away. I would say we have somewhat evolved positively.

  • Put shit in the hands of those people instead of cigarettes and it would even look tasteful.

  • you can't take the wicthcraft out of salem too ( the crucible)

  • @rapidkid28 Different Salem dude

  • wish i had a cunt tree...i'd be climbing it all day..

  • I can't believe I was actually dumb enough to smoke.

  • @1Beatis your dumb enough to stop smokin

  • Do you think they meant country matters?

  • BTW - that's Lori Saunders ("Bobbi Jo") from "Petticoat Junction" at 0:24.

  • @elc1960 Yes, it is! Bobby-Jo Bradley riding a little train that is rolling down the tracks....to CANCER!!

  • Loretta Lynn had a song that spoofed this jingle - "You can take Barney out of the barroom, but you can't take the "bar" out of Barney."

  • you can breath into the salem and die so young! sing....

  • @makiaphrodite you can go skydiving without a parachute, but...

  • @beAllbugger they can't scrub you out of the pavement

  • @beAllbugger iam just singing the song in a different way.

  • smoking rules! im havin one right now jimmymamma1

  • @TWOhits6 congratulations! you just injested rat poison! and that goes for any other dumb asshole that smokes because its "hip" and "cool". and dont reply with rude comments because you people know im right

  • @zukoluver100 im gonna beat off now

  • @zukoluver100 less then 3% of people die from smoking cigarettes, dont judge ppl just dont smoke if u dont like it, you dont have to call people dumb assholes chill out bro and have a cig lol jk

  • @Rickly09 i wasnt just referring to him/her, i was referring to everyone that smokes. my grandma and grandpa died from emphysema from smoking. so yea.

  • makes no sense at all, that someone would intentially breathe in a poisonous vapor

  • use to be my cig of choice!

  • Salem! Burn them like the witches WE used to!

  • Damn! The country smells like cigarette smoke? And I thought it was bad living in the city and breathing all the car exhaust fumes. It's just as bad, apparently, to live in "Hooterville" as NYC.

  • Smoke 'em if you've got em. Ah, delicious.

Yes, that true flavour is what every American should expect from a quality brand. Why not have a refreshing Salem cigarette?

  • fuck menthols. i guess if your a female, menthols are fine, but i really cant see why any guy would bother with a menthol. just have a mint when you smoke a regular

  • @gsboss still coming to terms with your homosexuality, Joe?

  • @gsboss I smoke menthols because regular cigarettes taste like dirty feet!

  • this is unbelievably gay

  • They should put cigarette ads back on TV. If they can have all those pharmaceutical ads w/ their lil "do not take XXXXX if you take nitrates, for this may cause an unhealthy drop in blood pressure" than they could do the same w/ ciggs.

  • @RedneckPeg In NC, they've banned smoking in all restaurants. And bars.

  • As a kid these commercials were all over the airways. Hell I remember cigarette vending machines outside of grocery store entrances. Crazy.

  • @JJandCK I remember when they used to sell cigarette shaped candy! Had a box and chalky type sticks in them that had red tipped ends to look like it was lit.

I used to eat them and of course, pretend to smoke.

  • @pinkyluvluv They still do - you just gotta know where to look for them. I live in Rhode Island, and the "Newbury Comics" CD and comics store chain sells them right up at the checkout counter. They also sell Teaberry, Blackjack and Beeman's gum there too.

  • @RedneckPeg No not really but i was at walmart last weekend!

  • Thank you, tvtropes.

  • hahaahhahahha looos comeerciiaales de antttes :)

  • WHAT THE FUCK???????

  • I"ve never seen so many retarded adults in one place ever!

  • @57bigjoe HAHA!

  • If I start smoking, I'll get that blonde.

  • Take Salem out of your country butt.

  • Now with EXTRA DELICIOUS lox- Well, we'll just leave that ingredient out of the commercial.

  • YOOOOOOOOU CAnnnnn....

Take negro's outta the ghetto BUT..

You can't get the ghetto out the negro.

Well at least that's the way WE sang it at school! :-)

(and I'm black so don't go there).

  • @tonybklyn yeah we did have our own way of twisting things around back then, sometimes you have to laugh at yourself. I was from the country and went to an all white school and the blacks in the city schools use to chant. Go back...go back...go back to the woods. Fun times, and it was fun living in the country. I wish I could go back in time.

  • i would just LOVE to see a ciggarette commercial today just to see the look on peoples faces! XD

  • Let's all light up people andd put on a pair of bellbottoms and platform shoes and go dance at the nearest disco in order to escape this horrible world we live in today! It's ironic that people got brainwashed back into the system we were fighting against back in the late 60s and 70s. WHAT HAPPENED??? Protect the right to smoke DAMN IT!!

  • @70sman4ever

    I LOVE THIS GUY!

    You are so right!

Todays society is exactly what we in the 60s & 70s were fighting against!

(Maybe we did not fight hard enough? Or we stopped it then.) But now the establishment. rules & government anti-freedom laws are back w/a vengeance?

Cruel & Greedy world we live in now?

I need a cigarette...ah..Here they are? flicking my bic now....puff....puff... long drag..ahhhh..That taste good! :)

  • @Godzie1 I just lit one up with my trustee Zippo lighter which belonged to my father (yes he is still alive I inherited it!). We gotta fight harder man, life is too short to let these government bastards try to run our lives...

  • @Godzie1 Actually I was born in 1975 December 11 to be exact. But I am possessed withthe spirit of the 70s. It is my religion!

  • Statistic: 100% of non-smokers die!

  • some people used to sing:

you can take the n***** out of the ghetto but

you can't take the ghetto out of the n*****

  • @webmail111 Thats not cool!

  • My sister used to mimic Salem's jingle with: "You can take Salem out of the country's butt---- You can't tke the country out of Salem's butt."

  • OMG All you doe doe birds really believe this tiny stick = death?

Not! Lies made all of you brainwashed!

Sorry all this was a plan for the government to make more money w/the scare tactics and they succeeded! People believe anything. Until it hits them in their ass...Then it's I didn't know? Duh! Ringo Starr has become 70 & feels 24 & been smoking those "Death sticks" for decades. So have I, Get over it because we all die someday!

  • @Godzie1 Yes but hopefully not like George Harrison [since you want to bring up Beatles]. The fact is there is a specific genome you are born with that makes one more prone to cancer than others. While Gramps can smoke a cigar a day 'til he's 97, not be sick a day in his life and die of natural causes nephew Jimmy could die of lung cancer at 52 because he smoked in his presence! If YOU want to play that game of Russian Roulette go right ahead.

I quit and I feel a lot better for it.

  • @Harvey3rdman Statistically? You have a higher chance on dying from a car crash & a plane crash then by smoking a cigarette! You are one of the smokers that fell in to the medias scare tactics that quit. The government is getting rich from it & I dont like being ripped off! It was a money plot to help w/the national debt! & us smoker's were their victims!

  • @Harvey3rdman You probably drink now to save your sanity during stress & that alone will destroy your liver? Every day when you go out there is a chance of Getting hit by a car? Even sitting in a restaurant eating you can choke on food & die. We don't stop doing things in life because it might or might not kill us? Should we ban cars because of accidents? No. But who the hell gave anyone the right to stop a relaxing habit to millions of people? This worlds gone NUTS?
