  • Thanks for this tutorial. It really helped cement my plans for the books I'm planning to bind. The only differences I making is the pages are already going to be printed on (I'm a writer ^_^), the covers are going embroidered fabric and leather, and I'm going to build a small pvc frame to help make the actual sewing part easier (an idea I got from another tutorial).

  • @kakashisbabe23 Good on you, sounds awesome. Your are welcome for the tutorial

  • Yay!!! Well done. Please share your finished book that would be great :)

  • Hello. I just wanted to tell you that I've made my first-ever hand-conded hard-cover phoyography book, and it came out fantastic, thanks to your tutorial. It is so clear and precise that even in the first time i succeed. Thank you so much!

Maybe i'll send a link to pictures later... it's now drying.

  • I have only tried making a book this way, I don't know about any changes. But give it a go and let us know if any cloth works

  • is it necessary to use the bandage cloth?? or any soft cloth is fine??

  • I just wanted to say thanks for the video. I just made my first cloth covered journal and it took me only about an hour to make the cover. Love the video.

  • i enjoyed this :)

  • i JUST LOVED THIS VIDEO. YOUR VOICE IS VERY SOOTHING AND REALLY ENJOYED ALL 4 PARTS. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO SHARE YOUR WONDERFUL SKILL WITH US ALL.

  • @jaemily1000 Thank you for the kind comment :)

  • thank you!

  • Amazing! As soon as I make one of these I'll try to post a picture or vid :) Thanks for sharing!

  • By the way, you have the most detailed and simplest way of making one! Thank-you sooooo much!!!!! :D

  • How long did the whole process take?

  • Why is everyone trying to make River Song notebooks?? You guys are awesome!! That's why I came here.. Otherwise $90 to buy one from overseas.. Flag. I'd rather be a creative poor student. :-)

  • I know in one of your videos you said somewhere what book you learned this from. I want to know the title and author of that book you learned from so I may buy it also.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Thank you so much for this whole tutorial. I used this to make a book for an assignment at university! I just finished it today. for a first try it reckon it has come out quite well :D

  • What kind of glue are you using?

  • Thanks for the great set of tutorials. I write a journal everyday, so get through a fair few, its going to me awesome to make my own.

Im hoping to do a River Song notebook/diary journal (from Dr Who TV series), so this has helped me a great deal.

  • @PurdyBear1 That is what I'm doing RIGHT NOW lol. River ftw!

  • Love it! (the camera person could have done a better job, lol.) I think I want to start making my own journals now! Where do you get your supplies from?

  • @bugaboo30 seriously, I just grabbed what I had. Probably not very archival at all.

  • Do you have the instructions written down anywhere? I would love to give these a go. You teach brilliantly btw, thank you so much for sharing your talent

  • Oh wow! My friend and I were just talking about how we wished one of my stories was in book form instead of like a word document! I am thinking about doing this for my story Run For Your Life and I can't wait to try!

  • Oh darn. I didn't know it was gonna be that hard!

  • Thank you so much, these videos were great, very informative. I can not wait to try this with my own Book of Shadows. Thank you again.

  • How many pages does the book end up to be with 4 papers?

  • I love what you've made..will make my own and let you know how I get on..thanks so much for sharing

  • I really enjoyed watching this. Very informative. Can't wait to try it. Thank you.

  • Also, (last post, I promise!) Do you glue down your mull and ribbons? Doing so before glueing endpapers to cover will create a really strongly-bound book (as both the endpaper and the mull are glued to the cover) and you won't have that little puffy bit alongside the spine when you open the book...

  • Tip for glueing endpapers to the cover...my first few books I used the mthod you used and had the same problem, so I started doing it differently, and found it works great! Instead of pushing the cover down onto the glued endpaper, try lowering the glued endpaper down onto the cover. Lay the cover flat infront of you and line-up where the spine is to sit, hold the block with one hand and use your other hand to guide the paper down gently, making sure it is well-aligned. Then press down.

  • I've been making hardcover books for a while now, and found some different techniques here which I'm gonna try out, thank you for sharing! If you haven't tried cloth covering yet, I highly recommend it, gives gorgeous results, and very hard-wearing.

  • No, I don't have an etsy shop

  • Do you have an etsy shop? These videos are really helpful! Thanks for putting them up!

  • dude! Your videos rock!!! Thank you for taking the time to teach me. I have become a freak about old Bibles and wanted to recover my own. I appreciate your video sooo much i have watched all of them 10 times so thank you thank you thank you! Jim in California USA

  • very interesting, makes me wanna make my own book...which im going to but i have no idea what im going to use it for...lol

  • Thanks for sharing this...really needed a tutorial for book binding.

  • I assume you can use a typed manuscript as the pages? and i assume you can very the size.::D I'll be starting from step one.

  • It's so professional! And no crazy devices or materials that I have to go out and buy. Normally these sort of tutorials seem easy at first and then I need the nose hairs of some and African bull. Thank you for putting this together for us!

  • Great video! It was very helpful. I am going to make a journal using paper I handmade.

A few questions: what kind of glue did you use? how long did it take for the glue to dry at each stage? what kind of paper did you use for the cover?

  • thankyou very much! the whole series was very helpful :D

  • Hi, I saw the uneven cutting of pages probably caused by the way you fold the papers or when you stiched the pages. I was wondering is there anyway we can make it even? I can't imagine how people cut it flat for a case of a very thick book. I mean the case as in minutes 4.42, when you said you are not happy. :-) Ken

  • Thanks for posting this videos, I have a good idea now on how to make this journals, and will improvise with the supplies, until I can make a decent one :)

  • can you make me one plz

  • I contacted about 5 places and not one person even got back to me! I'm so happy to have found your clear instructions and see how easy it is. The only thing I was unsure about was how big to cut the in-pages....I guess I sort of figured it out....Many thanks from Canada!!!!

  • @ponydalook From when I made my books, I found that making the end sheets just a little bit wider than the paper you used for the pages of the book itself, it worked a lot better, mostly because there's a few millimeters in the crease that you need to fill. I suggest cutting and fitting before gluing though, just to see how much bigger it needs to be

  • Hi , i was just wondering..what is that piece of white fabric on the side of the book?(on top of the black stripes of fabric?)

  • @00miaaa00 bandage fabric

  • I'm going to do what you did as soon as i finish a book!!!!!!!!!

i think im going to make it a reading book.

  • Thank you so much for these detailed videos, I've watched them several times now while making my own journal. Maybe I'll make a video of the result, but it might take a while, I'm still looking for some cool cover fabric. So thanks, and I love that Australian accent you have!

  • @CCfan1987 That was so not Australian! It was Kiwi! Haha sorry but people from other countries never seem to be able to tell the difference

  • Thank You for the time and effort you put into making this tutorial... it was very helpful! :) Keep up the great work... you've got such a nice personality :) xXx

  • Execelent! thanks =)

  • thank you soooo muchh i will do so

  • great idea, thanks for sharing

  • nice.

  • thank you so much but my question is where do you buy that hard cover part

  • Sorry, I'm from New Zealand and I just got given it.

  • @Lizkaaa11 any art store will sell artboard. or u can take apart aan old bible or something

  • @Lizkaaa11 you can get card stock from your nearest craft store, idk what kind of store you have near you, but if you use google or something you should be able to find a store pretty easily, just make sure you call in ahead of time to make sure they actually have some so that you don't wait a trip to the store just to find out that they don't have it :D

  • @Lizkaaa11

well i get it from when i used up my binders i just take the cardboard out of that it works grat but be carful when you cut it because its really difficult!

  • @Lizkaaa11 You could just use cardboard... right?

  • @Lizkaaa11 The hard cover part can just be matte board. You can find it in any framing shop or craft shop. Just make sure it isn't foam core.

  • can i replace the three black tapes with papers?

  • I really think it should be fabric, but that would just be my opinion :)

  • @Baronessnz can you use cardboard instead of a thick card

  • @TinkleBellxz

i did my book with out it it came out great i've done three books already i don't think youHAVE to put it

  • @TinkleBellxz it could be ribbon too.

  • You are awesome!! Please send me sme detials!

  • this is briliant where did you learn to do this.

  • I read several books from the library and put the best ideas together. A little bit of trial and error and away I went.

  • May you tell me where u get the book block?

  • thank you thank you thank you

  • Hiya! I love this tutorial, thanks so much for the post. It's super useful. I don't get the signatures part though; is it every third section or something? :S

  • what kind of glue should be used to encourage durability?

  • what kind of glue should be used to encourage durability?

  • Yip, just any stationers. I didn't use anything fancy.

  • I'd love to make one of these as a gift for someone! great tutorial. Where can you buy the book materials like paper for the cover and the heavy paper for the inside of the cover? at a hobby store, like Michaels or something? or at a specialty store?

  • Thank you for this video! :)

  • Once the book is made I don't think you can :(

  • Hi! Your tutorial is very encouraging you have made it simple. I just have one question: What is the material that you have covering the spine of your signatures after you have sewed it together. I think you have skipped telling us that part. Thanks, I really like watching your videos. Janice Mae

  • Hi, are you talking about the white fabric? It's just bandage material :)

  • Only one way to find out :)

  • can you use elmers school glue to glue back a couple of pages that have fallen or are in the process of falling off.

  • Oh wow, I've got to try this sometime. I'm writing books and they're ready to be bound, but everytime I've done it it looks bad and it doesn't last very long. But I think this'll help me out alot. Thanks a bunch!

  • Great beginner tutorial. One suggestion might be to label all the supplies used in the tutorial.

  • This guide was really inspirational for me, thank you, AMAZING how to video!! :)

  • Thank you for a great how-to video.

    Gerry :)

  • I think it came out great!

  • thanks so much, i cant wait to get home and try this!

  • what kind of paper did you use for the cover and what kind of paper did you use for the text block?

    thanks ;)

  • Normal photocopy paper :)

  • aswome i'm so going to try this! finally i can make a story book to look the way i want it!

  • what do you use for the cover? some sort of cardboard or just thick paper? also, i don't understand how you would substitute the cover for fabric. wouldn't the cover be all flimsy then?

  • she uses two boards of card stock and covered it with fabric. it was shown in the previous video (step 3).

  • she dont show inside(

  • um... can u make it 4 me plz i don't have the stuff and i'm only 10

  • Well it isn't hard and all you need is a sewing needle, paper, cheap fabric and something for the hardcover.

  • This looks fun, I'll have to try it sometime.

  • So freaking great, I'm making a book for my portfolio, and now I will have a professional look to the book!

  • uhuuuuuuu great!

    Loved it!

    Thanks For the video!

  • I'm no expert at all, this is just the way I know. Give it a go, and let us know how it works out :)

  • that was an AWSOME video thx!!!!!! i have a ? instead of hand sewing the pages cant you sew em with the sewing machine? HELP

  • Awesome video series! Most helpful.

  • Thank you very much ... very easy to follow. Well done!

  • as many pages and signatures as you like. THe measurements are based on your paper thickness, so it adjusts to thinner or thicker. :)

  • Very cool, I want to give this a try. Would this still work if I added more pages? I want to make a really thick journal.

Your books are very pretty you've done a great job. On both the books & making your videos. Thanks for sharing

  • omg very good video i hope i can keep up with all the steps!

  • You are very welcome :) let me know how you go

  • These are amazing videos! I'll finally be able to make my own art journal!Thank you for showing me the way!!!you are absolutely great!

  • great vid.

  • thanks for these videos! They have helped me a lot!

    Blessings!

  • can I use regular paper as well? so the same kind if have used to make my book ?? (the pages, not the cover)

  • This is exactly what I Was looking for!!

We have a lit project in school to make a book from the paper we r writing so I am gonna try this. What material did you use for the cover? and since I am going to use printed pages, how much space should I leave in the middle? I mean When I print the pages.

    thanks thanks thans!!!!!! :)

  • I'm sorry I am no expert on book making, so I wouldn't have a clue about the spacing that you're after, perhaps make a mock up so you can trial it. The card I use is very thick: 2mm. Good luck :D

  • don't know sorry.

  • thankyou so much for your easy tuition! i had been looking around on the internet for how to do this, but your video was by far the simplest and best explained. im going to make one for my girlfriend- she loves all sorts of quotes and love poems, this is a great gift for that.

    thanks again.

ps. what is a really nice type of thick paper that i could use for the leaves???

    thanks.

  • What a romantic gift. You'll have to post a pic when you have finished. A nice thick paper is watercolour paper, you can buy like a pad of paper. Very thick though. You can have some thick and some coloured, you can even hace some pages half size for interest. Good luck

  • watercolour paper eh?

see cos i was going to write in a fountain pen, all cursive looking and stuff. is it possible to get this paper in A3 size? and will the ink seep through to the other side?

    thanks very much

  • Good Video! I was looking for exactly this kind of video to refresh my memory since it's been years since I've made a book. Thank you! Have you added the part where you glue the linen to the page binding?

  • you love glue dont ou throught the whole video you out alot of glue and only used glue to stick stuff together!;D

  • Lol, me no expert, glue stick probably better, I'll have to try it next time. :D

  • had fun watching the video

  • Thank you very much for stopping by :)

  • This is a great video well done for making it it has helped me alot. im greatful

  • I'm so glad I could be of service, I'm certainly not an expert I just enjoy making books and wanted to share it with others. Thanx for feedback

  • Thanx for the feedback, I'll have a look at the part I've left out and fix it up for ya. :)

  • great videos, but you forgot to show you gluing the linen? strip to the outside of the papers, on top of the tapes. still, really well done, a lot easier to understand than most of the online written instructions.
