This dance is Chamorro hula, mostly done for tourism purposes. Yes we all love hula, and yes Guamanians also do our own Chamorro dances. Hula has a modern/auana version and so does every other culture. Show aloha/chamorro spirit by appreciating the effort and love for the art of dance... It's a great show & he has many fans. Otherwise you wouldn't be watching lol.
Everyone should be slapped! Jimmy Dee is basically Chamorro Country...but he just has Hawaiian theme on the shows. Why dont we blast the Hawaiians for using Reggae into their culture...since that came from the carriebean areas...its the same thing about blasting ourselves. there are a lot of Latin beats in his music...hence "spanish" rhythms
No one one can dispute what is a Chamorro dance and what isn't. The Native Dances that you see now being performed is the Artists "Interpretation" of what the Chamorro dance might have looked like, the Dances are combination of Polynesian style dance, As said by Guam Dance Master Frank Rabon .
No entertainer on Guam has ever claimed their Dance routine is Original Chammoro.
Dude's still wearing the same old rug on his head when he offered me a DJ gig at his old Chamorrita Club back in '83. Never took the offer- He couldn't pay me enough!
I think the point being made is that this is being mistaken as Chamorro culture and CHamorro dance. Jimmy Dee's show started as way to capitalize on Guam's new status as a tourism destination in the 1970's. He modeled it after shows that had been produced in Hawaii for many years already. Suddenly, Guam was a major player in Pacific island tourism and borrowed the hawaiian style islander identity to promote. Sad that to this day, we seldom see our traditional Chamorro dances being performed.
Chamorros were never fully educated on their own history. What we have been taught about our was told to us by the USA. Its only recently has so many new things been discovered about Chamorro culture due to the efforts of historians at the University of Guam. And more things are being discovered in the Spanish documents of Guam. Most of which were never researched until recently. Remember that the USA went to war with Spain and were enemies. So the history we have been taught is very biased.
to the Jimmy D comment. Jimmy D is Chamorro pop culture, so dont go blasting about Chamorro culture. every ethnicity has a pop culture side. A lot of Chamorros were farmers back in the days, hence country western reflects on that. Jimmy Dee is a chamorro country singer! a lot of chamorros lived on Ranches and did a lot of agriculture. I myself love chamorro country music. who cares? its all based on pop culture. we are in the 2000s...get with the program., Chamorro pop is what chamorros like
i think that our traditional dances can be contemporized to make them 'pop'. similar to the way the Irish took there traditional dances and made "Riverdance". there is a better way to make our dances 'pop' and still maintain cultural integrity. even the hula has been modernized, yet remains uniquely hawaiian. these dances are not based on any Chamorro styles what so ever. Chamorros are easily seduced by American pop culture and dont value what truly makes them a unique people.
most people watching this dance will automatically think.."HAWAIIAN". if more of our Bailan Españot was performed, there would be no mistaking us for hawaiian. Our hispanic dances spark more curiosity about our culture. this style misleads most into thinking that Guam is a Polynesian island culture. WE ARE NOT. Those islands have a beautiful culture, but it is NOT OURS!
Actually, there are alot of groups performing the art of dance, chant and music - if you are really interested, competition is coming up the last weekend of June (all the groups have been invited to compete) at the Mercy Heights Auditorium...call PAHA for ticket information and price. =)
Jimmy Dee's shows were endorsed by the tourism industry & what he presented to tourists misled them into thinking that Chamorro culture and dance is same as Hawaiian. Local bands dont call their reggae styles Chamorro music. But Jimmy Dee's performance were used to promote Chamorro culture. It would be like hawaiians using salsa dancing and calling it hawaiian cultural dance. Latinos would laugh. It's no wonder that Hawaiians laugh at these dances. They would not laugh at our hispanic dances.
proud? i think jimmy dees productions are a joke. they are a cheap rip off of hawaiian style entertainment. jimmy dee productions like these contribute to the identity problem that Chamorros have. Chamorro dances are not like hawaiian dances! There is no Hispanic heritage displayed in these dances. It is our Hispanic heritage that sets us apart from the rest of the islanders. It makes us unique in the pacific. Other islanders laugh when they see this kind of performance. I laugh too.
He just fucked it up by singing it off course!

Something to ponder :
If Jimmy Dee's show is a cheap rip off of hawaiian style entertainment.
Does the same apply for the Local bands that perform Reggae Music ? Are they a cheap rip off of Jamaican stlye -Bob Marley- entertainment, too ?
My opnion : Regardless, If it's Made in Hawaii or Jamaica... Bottom line is it's a PRODUCT of Guam.
