I've noticed that in addition to being a really great actor himself, Walken is also awesome at bringing out the best in other actors. For instance, his scene with True Romance with Dennis Hopper, the scene in Basquait with Jeffrey Wright or the Russian roulette scene in Deer Hunter with Robert Deniro. All of those scene's could be considered the best acting those actors have ever done. When you're opposite Walken you have to step your game up.

This is what Walken does these days - one scene that becomes a memorable part of a movie, something I think Tarentino understands implicitely. A less confident young actor (like Steve McQueen in the Magnificent 7) would have been trying to distract the viewer and steal the scene which McQueen did constantly to Yul Brynor . Johnny Depp has the sense to shut up and let Walken do his thing... he really had no choice anyway as the man is a legend but I think it was the right call.
