This is by far the best arrangement of this song I've ever heard, with an impeccable execution of such an emotional (and difficult) piece. It really gave me chills. Keep up with the great work!
I am in love with this arrangement. It gives me chills every time I hear it, and singing it with my high school choir was so moving. It really is a gem.
okay, i know this argument is kind of done at this point, no agreement is going to be met, im just kind of confused because the soprano note at the end is clearly a D, i dont understand where anybody got the idea that it is a G. is it just because the song is in the key of G?
I love the arrangement!!! Very nice work. I didn't see anyone mention this, but after listening to this a few times I swear I can hear pitch straightening. It is most noticible on the "brave" post near the end. It sounds very digitized to me.
To do this there would of had to been a second studio recording made with individual microphones. I have used Cubase 5 software and this sounds very similar to the effect that happens when I straighten pitches. It is still a great arrangement!!!
alot of people forget that this song was written at a time when americans were fighting for theyr freedom against tyranny....now, when i see the flag of america, i think of tyranny....our government and the people that support it, have destroyed america...this is no longer a land of the free, it is the land of oppressive government and dictatorship...a land where the government is the master, and the people are subjects of the master...the opposite of the america over 200 years ago
When you originally wrote this, did you want the high G to come out as an overtone (I'm not saying it is an overtone.. I'm just saying that because it's extremely high and personally when I wrote really high stuff, I use it to have an overtone quality) or did you want a really thick chord with the root to top it off?
I never really noticed before how important it is to control vibrato when you are singing in a choir - until this video. All of these people have straight, smooth voices and it makes the song sound so clean and clear without the individual vibrato clouding up the clear notes. SO beautiful.
OH MY GOSH!!!! I have been listening to this for about a month and have just now experienced the high G. It is utterly fabulous!!!!! It is so high that it literally borders my threshold for hearing!!!! You are so lucky to be able to hit that note!
erm - that dissonance is called a suspension (and is a wonderful trick) and fyi Tibbershet, a Gb is an F#!!! - just a different way of calling the same note!
That's probably the best arrangement of that song that I've heard. The disanence (sorry if I spelled that wrong) at "whose broad stripes and bright stars" was so perfect. You're sopranos are amazing, especially whoever hit that G!
So is it the girl on the end in the white shirt that hits that G? Because whoever it is, I commend them. And your bass is simply amazing at 1:29!! I can only hear the note with headphones on because it is so low!!
people are listening to two different things there is a soprano 1 singing a very high note BUT there is also a overtone sitting on top thanks to the ensemble being in tune!!
I don't know which G everyone keeps referring to. But if they're talking about the last high note by the one soprano, it is not a G, she's singing a D.
Oh wow. So I listened to it again and I didn't hear what you were talking about. So, then I listened again and harder, and then I HEARD IT! HAHA, I feel stupid now. I think my dinky computer speakers may of had something to do w/ me not hearing it before, but GEEZ, it's so high it doesn't even sound like a high note, it sounds more like an overtone. You have some amazing soprano's there. Sorry if I offended anyone, please accept my apology. Great arrangement btw.
I think that most people hear that really loud high D and either think that it is the G, or that there is no G (like me). You shouldn't feel stupid since it's hard to hear anyway haha
You have to listen very carefully for it. It's being covered up by the high D for the most part. I thought it was a D at first until a friend of mine (who's a vocal performance major) told me to listen to the cutoff at the end. You'll hear the G.
@Whatsmynameagain03 Are you that dense that you haven't figured out that we've already established that it's a G? Way to be witty commenting on a comment that's well over a year old.
you guys totally did awesome job gave me chills, but there is one thing that definitely bothers me ... unless your sight reading you guys shouldn't have needed the sheet music! It takes away from the preformance!
Ah, what an ending. I'm actually singing this very arrangement for my high school's choir, and somehow, there are sopranos that have a D at 8 in the morning. Incredible arrangement.
This is the best version of the song I have heard. Period. Simple as that. My family is a very military family and we are proud of our country. My mother and father both are Army veterans and my uncle, a staff sergeant, was killed in Iraq in 2005. My great uncle was a marine on Iwo Jima during WWII, and you really make my proud when I hear this over and over again!
As a Marine having served this country; I have heard the National Anthem numerous times. This is the best I have ever heard it. Just hearing this song makes me proud of the time and dedication that I have gave for this country. Outstanding job.
This is a great arrangement of this song. I would have like to have heard it live instead of a recording that has been tampered with. Just an opinion but you can easily tell throughout that it is has been tampered with.
Wow. Thats good stuff right there. And at the end with your sopranos High notes and wen the men com in just make it. The sound was so pure and rang in your concert hall.
They have to be overtones, because this group is too tight not to cut off together. I know overtones when I hear them. I'm talking the D above High C and the fourth above that, the G!
You just don't understand. The ringing that happens after they have cut off, stopped singing, not projection or making any noise, the sound that is being made between the time the group cuts off and the applause, THAT'S what I'm talking about! The notes that are being sung, the D and the G are resonating enough to create the Overtone OCTAVES of those notes! It's miraculous!
Just to end this before any fighting ensues...this is my video and my arrangement, and grandpianoalex is correct. The D above high C and the G above that are both being sung and the ringing of those exact notes that you hear after the cutoff is simply the lovely reverb in the concert hall. I hope this clears things up for everyone!
Okay, maybe I'm not making myself clear enough. The sound that is being produced that I strongly feel are overtones are the whistle tones! I do hear the girl on the far right sing the High G, but I hear the octave of that and the fourth below, the D above the G that the girl sings. When it rings in the concert hall, it rings with immense clearity above all that is being sung, that's what I've always known to be an overtone. It's the super high whistle tones! Unless you have a Maria Carrie!
I finally got my own copy of this arrangement! You can order it from Alfred Publishing...the item number is 00-31206 and the UPC is 038081339771. You'll know you have the right one because it is listed with the following: Words by Francis Scott Key, music by John Stafford Smith / arr. Jamey Ray.
ps I never thought I'd find an arrangement that would challenge the Take 6 version and this really does. Your vox are so damned clean - as are the harmonies. The suspensions are awesome - reminds me to a degree of Cruxifixus by Lotti (if you can, check out the Sixteen version conducted by Harry Christophers).
Holy shit! I'm a voice major at the univ. of Memphis and that was absolutely amazing! That last note was incredible. Chills ran all over me. In a way that soprano not is so high that you think you're not even hearing it and that it's just an overtone, but then when you listen close enough you hear it! What was that? A high G, did u say? Incredibly fantastic!
Sorry to burst your bubble buddy, but she was singing a G. Mr. Ray confirmed it in the previous comments if you actually care enough to look through all of them. I'll prove it to you when ALFRED FINALLY HAS COPIES OF THE SHEET MUSIC AVAILABLE ON ITS WEBSITE grrrrr...
I agree with every positive comment that has been posted. Your arrangement and the voices prove to be an awesome combination. To be honest, I have never been a fan of our anthem because it speaks of pride of war and not about pride of country. That's kind of sad to say but true. You've taken it to another level and now I can at least say that I truly enjoyed the performance. Outstanding!!!
In my opinion, it speaks more of persistence and determination under difficult circumstances such as war, which can be proved by the fact that it was written during (or after, correct me if I'm wrong) a shelling by the British. The fact that the flag was still there during the bombardment can be seen as pride of the country.
You all are going to heaven. There is no way you can sing like that and not go there. God loves you all so very much to be able to make such a perfect sound.
I have been searching youtube all day for arrangements of the SSB to find new parts to add to my group's version and this is without a doubt the most spectacular version I have ever heard in my life - it almost brought tears to my eyes and it definitely sent shivers across my skin. You are an amazing writer and I enjoyed every minute of this, congratulations to the group as well; my highest regards to all of you.
I've been watching this video for quite some time now. I found it in a random search of the Star Spangled Banner. This is my favorite arrangement out of any I've ever experienced. I hope that one day I will be able to write as beautifully as you do. :)

this is the easily the most beautiful thing i've heard in my life. maybe it's not that much of a compliment as i'm only 15..
for once, everyone stayed on key, and didn't use excessive vibrato
i really love that gorgeous high note at the end<33
haha, i'm a girl who can barely sing an octave above middle C. i can sing lower though....haha srry, completely besides the point.
love the arrangement!
