  • I know it's a huge exaggeration, but I always feel inclined to think the British would pronounce "Harry Potter" as "Arry Po'ah". LOL extreme cockney

  • xD we Americans must sound like we're whining all the time, with our nasal pronunciations xD

  • British English is the accurate English, tyvm. :-)

  • I LOVE THE AMERICAN ACCENT

  • It's so hard to have people to understand you if you have a accent that is not stereotyped!

  • I like how America is one of the top viewing countries of this video. They should make a follow up video "now that you've learned the American accent basics its time to move onto the more advanced 'Merican' accent"

  • @JS500Y Her (Back of the throat) Heal (Back part of tongue) Hear (Combination of both) its hard to explain.

  • emmm, question to Native American speakers... how do you pronounce "H" in words such as "Her'" "Heal" "Hear"

more from the throat or from the back part of the tongue?

  • @clawbytes Excellent point about the tt becoming dd. Thanks. Will keep that in mind too.

  • wow i didnt know i sounded so dumb DX

  • Yes, we Americans actually pronounce our letters. lol Teachuh? There's no 'uh' at the end. It's written with an 'e-rrrrr'...pronounce the 'r'! :P

  • excellent !

  • thank you, very useful.

  • lol this is helping me learn how to speak with a British accent more then American, well maybe cuz I'm already American.....xD

  • Bahaha. I never realized that I have an American accent x)

  • Our R is never silent because AMERica is about equality!!

  • founding fathers debated rather to speak German or English....there was much anger left from Revolution thru war of 1812....English won but our dictionary writer (Webster) helped the large German influx with spelling English like Germans....so we have Bank and Check vs English its Banque and Checque....plus others examples we pronouce Hard German K's too.... standardized spelling was a post revolution thing......

  • it's funny, when we have english lessons ( i'm finnish ) and everyone else pronounces the words, when we listen them through, the same way as our teacher; very badly, and they don't pronounce the " r " at all. and then i am the only one who says the " r " XD :D i wish i could speak fluently american english... but maybe, when i'm going to go to LA as an exchange student in two, maybe three years. :)

  • i never noticed i had a accent hmmm cool

  • Also remember to replace 'T' with 'D'.

    Harry Podder.

Can I have a glass of wadder.

  • This is hilarious! It's like watching non-Spanish speakers try to roll their R's! X'D

  • In BAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHSTON they don't pronounce AHHRS....

  • This is helping me talk like im British so I know what NOT to do

  • i prefer american way of pronouncing because most words are pronounced closely to their spelling.

  • I much prefer the British one sorry ^^

  • The German accent is the best, imo.

  • 1% of viewers clicked the video on accident. 20% actually want to learn the accent. 79% are Americans who have nothing better to do.

  • @wkunzelman1 Noooooooooooo...... :), Just A Bit :P

  • @wkunzelman1 So true! I'm one of those Americans!

  • i think im backwards engineering a british accent by watching this lol

  • @Pacmanghost lol so am i. this is actually pretty helpful.

  • very nice video.

  • i love this. i've been reading all the comments in an american accent and then when i go back to english it sounds really english! lol

  • Harry Pote (Harry Potter) LMFAO!

  • bahston: cahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • man, being irish sucks.

  • im from britain but would love to live in usa :'(

  • @ravzter11: Yet, you all have Doctor Who! Which makes me want to leave Texas, and go live in Wales! :D

  • @ravzter11 sure come on in!

  • @ravzter11 And many Americans want to live in Britain. Hmm. We should do a switching places experiment. Britain would get a bit crowded though and America would have so much elbow room, it would be crazy.

  • @wkunzelman1 we do? lmao never heard that one.

  • hi im from washington state but grew up in boston......my mom is british....please imagine the end result....screwby huh? :)

  • HAHAHA the white girls sounds ASIAN

  • im american and I wish i had a british accent:( so if any1 is british ur soooo lucky i luv ur accent!!!!!!

  • It seems like British speakers pronounce their final 'r's when the next word begins with a vowel ( i.e. 'her appetite'). It seems like some speakers also do it with the word 'idea' (since it rhymes with 'hear' 'fear' etc). Americans never pronounce an 'r' at the end of 'idea'. To Americans it sounds really funny when a British person is talking with an American accent and says "...that ideaR is..."

  • I can do a pretty good American accent - but now that i have a script to follow it just turns into a stereotypical one :S

this video is rrrrrrealy helpful, thanks :)

  • the more i hear ppl explaining american accents, the more i want a british accent :DD

  • for me sound like a small r. Good teacher¡

  • @lesgrisout

Why don't you bitch some more. People love hearing that.

  • @lesgrisout fu. then dont watch this video.

  • @lesgrisout: I have to disagree, the greatest accent is the Australian Accent! :D

  • Although I speak english well,I mean american accent,I have only one problem ,pronouncing - NORTH ,it's so gooey.

  • IM FRRRRRRRROM RRRRRRRRRRRRRUSIA!! AHAAHAHAHAHHA NO COMMENT ! :D LOL

  • @Dy3sk3j I read your comment the moment that she mentioned it in the video. It seems like I see comments at the exact moment the person typing the comment was referring to. =D Convenient.

  • cuz the r actually sounds like an r in America ...... (LAME) go America

  • lol "Keep the R" "RRRRRRRRR!" xD

  • As an American, this video is freaking hilarious! xD

  • Keep the brit accent...it's hot.

  • @tk075 Not when you can't understand what the fuck they're saying, then it's just disgusting and annoying.

  • Im Serbian and I know ALL of the ACCENTS xDDDD im 12 year old!!

  • Hear in the east we saw Aww. Eastern Us pronounces words dif. Like a popular example is We say "New Jawsey" rather than Jersey. Northerners and west pacifics have the clearest accent.

  • @ELEIGHNA Who pronounces words like "New Joisey?"

  • how do i do the Spanish trill?

  • I live in Boston and i would like to point out no one from Boston skips out on their "r's" it's everyone from Somerville and Dorchester.

  • the only thing that stands between me and fluent English is my accent, it is a bit mixed up... some parts of it are made by me.. o.0.. so i chose american accent, easier to learn.. i have a British friend, but damn him when he talks fast.. o.0

  • How do you pronouce the R?? I can't my toung is twisted now :( me bad english as well!!! give up with trying lol hard!

  • im an american and i dont kno y im watching this

  • this is very helpful . thanks <3 !!

  • What about us bostonians?? I NEVER say r lol

  • ha ha ha four doors

  • Note to British people: Americans like your accent. Don't make an attempt to have an American accent because we automatically assume you are smarter if you have a British accent.

  • @thekkl Note to you: there is no way in hell we would ever forsake what we have for an American accent lol. I'm learning this just so I can poke more fun at my US friends over here :-)

  • I luv my country sweet america

  • lol nice

  • yeah, this isn't working... i wish i wasn't british..

  • @IdiotWithTheBlueEyes Your crazy, british accents are cool ! :)

  • im from mexico and i wish i could hear the difference between long island, boston, new york and so many other accents that exists in america BUT i just cant!!! is so frustrating!! i only can difference the cowboy accent...meanwhile this is very helpful thanks!!! :D

  • I wonder why I'm watching this, as an American. My priorities in learning accents are as follows: Londonian, Cockney, Australian, generic eastern European...and Canadian. In that order. Ah, if only I could! XD

  • LOL!

Most canadians have the American accent (except the "ou" sound).

But where I live, there are a lot of silent "r"s

  • since im american...ive never thought about it this much...

  • Amercian accent are seXy

  • i want a british accent so i can use it in prank calls to walmart -.-

  • it's fun to watch this when i'm american.

  • :O Why do people try to get rid of their accents?!? Accents are hot xD

  • @MsEmonster So they can be spies :P

  • I'm a American from Long Island -- certainly no foreigner! Sometimes my 'r' is silent. The Midwest dialect (what you hear on this video) is standard for the national TV and radio news. However, it annoys me that language tutors consider the Northeast accent "improper pronunciation". I don't sound like the TV, and that's all right.

Learn this accent if you want to get a nice job in the States. Just know that you might not always hear this accent even among educated people.

  • This and the other lessons from her were a good help for me.

I'm german and watch American TV shows about 1-2 hours a day, but I cannot get rid of my f**** german accent...

It might sound easy and funny for you as native speakers, but I would like to watch you trying to speak German ^^

You would be glad to have such a help!

  • @Floschi92

Why would you ever want to get rid of your German accent? They sound awesome! :)

  • I'm from New Zealand and Americas accent sucks.

  • @Ninjakid200

well your accent sucks from our view

  • @Ninjakid200 umm...wow. kay thanks.

  • @Ninjakid200 I prefer the Aussie accent over a Kiwi anyday.

    Figure that'd get you going.

  • omg i love America and i love and the accent xD

  • i have a bostonish accent and i dont really use r's so i was just watching this as a joke but it helped me learn how to roll my r's for spanish!!!! im so happy

  • irish

  • The British accent is much easier on the ears but seriously, there's NOTHING sexier than a chick with a Texan accent. I'm Indian, BTW; so I'm neutral.

  • come to ireland :D

  • I love it when american people attemt a brittish accent... but then again i have no idea how to do an american accent

  • haha im going to stop saying my Rs so i can sound British ha..

  • I fucking love R. Coolest letter, in my opinion. You guys should use it more.

  • I'm from Australia and this is a very helpful video. It's funny too

  • lol tbh i didn't think we had accents.. Sorry =/

  • @killwolfie

You didn't think you had accents?

    What...

  • hm i live in america and we never pronounce our Rs! thats prbaly cuz im from new york

  • aaaarrrggghhhhh!!!

  • Lol I'm an American and this is hilarious.

  • we are NOT pirates!!!

  • this is awesome video ..........its help me alot thanx for uploading!

  • im autralian, and it sounds funny when i try and do this video...

  • I think I need to show this to my little cousin. We're full blooded Americans but she talks like an immigrant. Well yea, she's only 3, but when I was her age, I spoke clear.

  • This helped me more with british accents then most british accent videos haah

  • I love how if any Brit tries to do an American accent, they either sound like a redneck or a valley girl. Who doesn't pronounce their r's.

  • @fcs360 yes they do >.>

  • @fcs360 They probably don't realize that theres many regional accents in America and they all differentiate a lot. I'm wondering if in England theres different regional accents. I havent really heard of any other accents when I hear them on tv or in movies.

  • @fcs360

Im from Georgia, all you hear is "R'S" i.e. "put the tirrrre on the carrrr and brrring in back rrround herrrr"

  • @fcs360 Too many movies

  • ARRR!!!

  • this is so great. im cuban and i just learned what was the most difficult thing for me to say in english. i cant even pronounce my strong spanish R consecutively. but the the English R with the american accent is no problem at all.

  • so... americans speak english better than english people.

  • This video got so much better when she mentioned Harry Potter. It's funny to think that people actually try to pronounce our R's

  • @sunandacarmela Becasue secretly you want to be an American movie actress, but you know it's not going to happen :)

  • As someone who speaks English English, it's funny to see how Americans have bastardised our language so much! One little example ... in English, we say 'herbs'. The yanks say 'erbs'. Very funny.

  • @Gandalf606 Basterdize? We made it better.

  • @Gandalf606 When combined with how we pronounce R, "Erbs" sounds better. In an American accent, "Herbs" just sounds stupid. Vice versa for English accents. "Erbs" would sound like "Ubbs".

Anyways, at least we say Aluminum the way it was intended to be pronounced. What's the score now, 30 to 1 England, now? Lol

  • Americans and Canadians pronounce the r's. American and Canadians have extremely similar accents as well.

  • But what about the Boston accent?

  • I'm quite confident with my english in general but there is one thing that buggs me, my Rs.

I live in Sweden and we use a kind of rolling R which is very simular to the rolling Rs. Whenever I pronunce an american R I feel that it's very exhausting for my tounge.

I speak english with my dad all the time when we're home and I never get used or comfortable with the Rs. I've followed your instructions in this vid and its still the same.

Do I do something wrong or do americans have super tounges?

  • But I'm from Boston.

  • lol boston. get in the caa

  • wow... i love it..

  • I live in the uk and every one wants me to say Harry potter.... Note to Americans never move to England !

  • People up north, like in Boston dont really pronounce the R's.

  • @Sarahsarahsaruh huh that's funny, i'm pronouncing the r's hardly and i made a test to check my accent.

    result: northern :D

  • ew. why would you want to have an american accent?

  • @sunandacarmela its beautiful :)

  • @sunandacarmela

    Because I don't have one!

  • @sunandacarmela deal with it. american accent ftw

  • @sunandacarmela deal with it. stop your ass from being racist.

    american accent ftw

  • @sunandacarmela CAuse it's sexy. ;D

  • I lol'd when she brought up Harry Potter.

IDK why i'm watching this shit though. I'm American.

  • @SecretNinjaKK me neither xD

  • @SecretNinjaKK Same here. I have no idea why I'm watching it.

  • @SecretNinjaKK because as an american you find it interesting that other countries have to work to speak all of the letters in a word. we find it simple because we're from here.

  • @SecretNinjaKK Same. I guess I'm curious how other countries learn how to talk with our 'accents.' XD

  • @SecretNinjaKK Ikr me 2

  • @SecretNinjaKK

Dont you like ! But i like , because i am NON - NATIVE . Ha ha ha ha

  • @SecretNinjaKK Hahah idk why i'm watchin this shit either ... I'm american too but these vids are pretty fun to watch :D

  • @SecretNinjaKK Because like people of every nation you love to hear someone talk about your nation(ality). :D

  • I think british's dialect easier than american, isn't it? I'm confuse what I could chose :(

actually I tend to american dialect

  • so many anti americans here =/ sad

  • Thanks so much. Really impressive.

  • Why am I doing the practice exercises? I'm American. >.>

  • I love mixing rhotic and non-rhotic speech:-)

  • she has got a point, but in boston its caa, not car

  • hahaha she would include harry potter

  • See, this is true for "standard" American English. But let's say you go to da hood:

"This poor man was shot by a gangster! Somebody better call for an ambulance!"

    Becomes.......

"This po'h man done shot by a gangsta! Somebody bettah call fo' uh am-buh-lance!"

  • why would you want to sound American our English sucks lol jk but in all honest i like European accents better then ours

  • @akaboo69 It's for people who are moving to the United States or visiting.

  • great

  • Only, in Boston, someone would say car like caa, xD

  • Thank's miss Lisa.

    You Rock :)

  • I LEARN A LOT

  • Those 'r's are so weird. Trying do an american accent is a slow process for me but I can slip into English and New Zealand ones quite easily.
