Rod Temperton, the organ player, did indeed write many hits under the Quincy Jones umbrella. However, he also did other things outside of Quincy Jones too. For instance, he wrote many songs for the only solo Karen Carpenter album that was never released until many years after her death.
The "organ player" went on to compose and produce under the Quincy Jones umbrella many of Michael Jackson's early solo hits like "Rock With You" "Off The Wall" and "Thriller". If you go listen to those songs, you can hear the Heatwave sound and influence.
