It started with the tradition of having an eagle fly over the stadium before every home game and is now the rally cry of the school. It's like Michigan's "GO BLUE". If you'd ever been to an Auburn football game you'd know the War Eagle tradition. It's not about the mascot or the team name. It started with the tradition of having an eagle fly over the stadium before every home game and is now the rally cry of the school. It's like Michigan's "GO BLUE". If you've never experienced it you wouldn't understand it. WAR EAGLE

It's actually different stories from all around. The one that most people stick to is that a Civil War veteran had a golden eagle he saved after the war as his pet. He brought it to the game [UGA vs. AU in the 1890s] and it got loose, flying raound the stadium. I don't think Thomas Jefferson started it though...AU wasn't around then.
I'm not spouting off stuff, I agree that the other kid was being ignorant. I attend AU right now and that's the story they tell us -shrugs-
