@StanBennet Right! It baffles me how this wasn't a hit...EXCEPT that it was a B side and not an A Side so the DJ's didn't really play it. Unless the record got flipped over at some parties, no one really heard it. I've always thought this song was one of the standouts on that album...and ESPECIALLY on side A of that album where IMO Side B was the stronger side.
Anybody who thought the 5th D didn't have enough soul never listened to this number or "Too Poor To Die." When the song was right for one of Billy's leads he was no less a soul singer than Motown lights Marvin, or Ruffin, Kendricks, Smokey or Levi. This fivesome made some of the finest music of the late 60s and early 70s, never failing as a tonic to the spirit.
This is one of my all, all, all-time favorite songs - I paid a pretty penny to get this CD and it was worth every bit. Just a really distinct, beautiful, somewhat dark classy 60's song by one of my favorite artists. The 5th Dimension were the standard by which all other vocal groups were measured - even my favorite artists ever, The Carpenters.
Soul City Records didn't have their own studios. Bones used Sound Recorders Studios for the 5th's recordings until late 1969 when he switched to Wally Heider's 16 track facility prior to recording the "Portrait" album.
It's hard to believe Billy Davis Jr has never gotten the recognition he deserves as a singer. His voice was and is amazing!!! This arrangement gives me chills.
@acoleman7475 I agree...And he STILL sounds AWESOME! Saw him a couple of weeks ago...he and Marilyn still sound and look FAB. CLEAR, STRONG, POWERFUL voices.
@acoleman7475 I think it might be because the only hits he had lead on were Aquarius and You don't have to be a star. But then, many people have gotten tons of more recognition for less. Bottom line - I guess - I don't know either.
That is a GORGEOUS picture of Billy Davis, Jr. also. YUM-MY!!!

For that time, I'm wondering why this wasn't a hit.

I don't know if it's the best song, but it shows off Billy's powerful voice and his mastery of a song.

@StanBennet And the thing is...there were SO MANY Billy led tunes that should've been released as A side singles and weren't. smh.

@acoleman7475 Also, they were a very humble and blue collar group.
