they come with short couplers that you can put on if you so choose.

As these cars aren't going to be shunted, they should have been sold with close couplings except on the end cars.

@richardols Don't disagree with you, but you can replace the automatic couplers that come with the set with short arm (non-operating) couples to get the more prototypical distances between the cars. MTH put these on one end of each car of the R-1 set and they look great.
