You can only shoot when you perceive the threat to your life is imminent. Because of what a gun does.
If you shoot to wound, then you as a cop could be charged yourself for unlawful use because it could be argued the threat wasn't imminent because you had time to aim to wound.
Imminent threat means they are a threat at that moment. Not at some point in the near future.

When you use lethal force you are trained to shoot to kill. I have been told by the police when discussing this issue with them that the bottom line is that a dead man won't sue you in civil court. Seriously though, deadly range with a knife is 20 feet and that guy was crossing that point as they shot him. They gave him plenty of breathing room and chance to drop the knife. Not to mention that's a really big fucking knife, I would have shot him too. He charged with clear intent to kill or try to kill and... well that's what happens when you bring a knife to a gun fight. Hate to see it but that's a classic example of suicide by cop.

When you use lethal force you are trained to shoot to kill. I have been told by the police when discussing this issue with them that the bottom line is that a dead man won't sue you in civil court. If someone breaks into your house, don't shoot them in the knee cap, shoot them multiple times, center mass. Right or wrong that is just the way it is.

if you wanted a happy ending, the suspect could've dropped his knife. He chose to hold onto it and run towards the officer in an attempt to cause bodily harm. The suspect chose his path, don't blame the officers for the suspects stupidity.

I agree with you to a certain extent. The guy was an idiot, yes IDIOT, but there was about 12 cops on the scene. surely one of them had a tazer. a single shot would have ended it all and the guy may have still lived. but definitely not when ALL the cops shot him.

how do you know if the officers even had a tazer? it is a fair assumption to say that if they did have a tazer they would have used it. also the man had a knife so a tazer isnt going to make him drop the knife. if anything it will make him hold onto it tighter so that doesnt really help the situation. then there is the little bit where the man charged the officers to kill them. they were only defending themselves. the man deserved to die.

i don´t know it, but i have seen a lot of tazer videos and allmost everyone did go down to the ground and didn´t stand up until the officers didn´t stop pulling the tazers-trigger.but my personal opinion - the wild west in america is still alive.
