This role was a leading role. She was the focal point of the movie and appeared from start to finish. The Weinstein company shifted it to supporting role cause they thought her performance in revolutionary road was too strong. By doing this they hope it would also win supporting.

How come her role in The Reader is nominated in the supporting category? That was clearly a leading role. She has more screen time than Ralph Fiennes and a much greater role. Anyway, I remember there was much talk back then about why she was included in the supporting category for The Reader. But I guess otherwise she couldn't have one two golden globes in one night. So, good for her!

@beebee7gd I believe it's because an actor can not be nominated twice in the same category. The GG wanted to recognize both her performances, and since Kate was only in The Reader for about half of it's running time, they were able to shift that performance into a supporting nomination. She's been my favorite actor since Heavenly Creatures. I believe she'll one day be put into the category of greatest actors of all-time like Olivier, Burton, Tracy, etc.

I think Kate should've been able to have been nominated for supporting actress for the Reader and then for actress in Revolutionary Road... not sure why she wasn't. It was obvious she deserved both.

I'm pretty sure the Oscars follows the 'no repeat' rule (at least in the acting categories), but I may be wrong. Funny that Johnny got a lead actor nomination for Alice...Seemed like he was in it maybe less than Kate was in The Reader. Surprised he was nominated for The Tourist at all...That movie looked pretty horrible (though I guess he gave a good enough performance). The Academy probably...

@makeyellowsnow ...didn't think Kate could win an Oscar for R.R., and they certainly didn't want her well overdue award to be in the supporting category...So they gave her the worthy performance in the category she deserves to win. In a perfect world, with as much talent as she has, they would have nominated supporting/The Reader and lead/R.R. and she would have won them both. She's that DAMN good! :)
