The lyrics of this song are just as applicable today as when they were written, 20 years ago. It is a searing indictment of the average citizen's preoccupation with materialism, empty slogans and signs of patriotism, and our glorification of war. All you have to do is change the term "holy Desert Shield" to "holy War on Terror" and it was like that song was written for today. This song was a true masterpiece precisely because it told us to wake up! Apparently, we are still in a slumber.
@alphacause Never...please, never change "Holy Desert Shield" to anything but. The Liberation of Kuwait was a fight reminiscent of fighting Germany's invasion of Poland. Just know that what we believe in as soldiers is always spoiled by the desires of men in power. An entire nation hailed us for our efforts to free them. I will always consider how this whole shit-storm started back in '91 as Holy in it's origin. Sad that power, and oil/money have tainted our efforts/losses.
I had to look on the CD to see the name of this song. I forgot how good the album was. I was going to upload it but I see many have beat me to it. Years ago, I heard this song on my way home from work (around midnight). On a public channel, once I hit the door, I called the station to find out who this was. Ran out and bought it the next day. Been one of my all-time faves since. Thanks for the post. :o )
I forgot how good this album was. I bought Mental Jewelry used and it's one of the few cds I actually wore out to the point it wouldn't play anymore. For some incredibly stupid reason I never bought another copy. Thanks a heap!
I just broke down in tears...its been years and so many road trips away. Thank you god for allowing me to be raised in the 80's and 90's. Thank you.

I feel like my soul is naked when I listen to this song... Meaning our masks fall as we reflect about who we really are and what we are here for.
