Venom helped Thrash to be born (influence to Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth), but also gave name to Black Metal and still people are arguing between those 2 genres??
Heaviest riff of the early '80s, not doubt. But it has to be up there with Symptom of the Universe by Black Sabbath and Dissident Aggressor by Judas Priest in the 'Heaviest Riff of All Time' list though.
This is thrash metal in it's infancy, the sound quality may sound like a raw piece of meat, but the message is still there and rings through the ages unto this day. Perhaps it's better this way, as it inspires others to improve upon it's artistic expression in various organic forms.
Its too bad that the Welcome To Hell and Black Metal albums didn't have better production, like the production quality of Slayers' Reign In Blood for example. Then these albums would be known as some as the best in all of metal, which they still kinda are anyway, but the quality of the recordings does hinder it a little. Yet, the songs still overcome the sub-par production and they still kick ass. Goes to show that good song writing is what really stands above all else.
i like a lot of thrash metal so i know its kind of odd i've waited this long to listen to venom, but this is first time hearing them and this is fucking awesome!!!
they say Metallica is the first thrash metal band but venom was there before Metallica. i would say that Venom is the most influential heavy metal band in the whole world because not only did they start thrash metal but they also started black metal. They are the first band of two different subgenre's and that in my book makes them the most influential heavy metal band unless if there are other bands i dont know about that are the first of multiple subgenre's.
@SilentAssassin187 Metallica was the first....Venom was speed Metal at the time.....well there are various opinions so...Even Raven can be called the first
@hjejmnse1 venoms first album was considered a cross between speed metal and early thrash metal so i still think venom was the first thrash metal band.
I FUCKING AGREE WITH ALKLIVER!!!!! The name ''BATHORY'' say's it all!!!! DOES THE SONG ''countess BATHORY'' ring a bell????? FUCKING LIAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ''BURN THE POSER!''
Quorthon took a riff from this song. Listen to the riff from 1:04 onwards then listen to the song Bathory-Born for Burning. Quorthon said that he never heard of Venom when he started making music. But here's a couple of ways to tell that he lied:
1. On Bathory's first album, there are songs called 'Raise the Dead' and 'Sacrifice'. Take a look at this album and you'll know that he took song titles.
2. He took a riff from this song.
Quorthon made legendary music, but he did lie about Venom.
@peliparado94 of course, hellish connections are mandatory, and one could also include mental disease, serial killers and Nazis just for the hell of it
@peliparado94 thats the message i want to pass to many people...that true metal is about power, darkness or satan not teenage love...that fucking pisses me off...even though im still a teenager
@peliparado94 It's too easy to speak about Satan and darkness. Try talking about devils, witches and darkness while your under the influence of psychedelics :p
LOL my friends compare old black metal (venom) with shit like cradle of filth and shit and say ins the same kind of genre. HELL NO DUDE. NOT AT AL i tell them i dont like that black metal shit. and venom just does not fall in that same category. anyone get me?
Similar to Born for Burning by Bathory... I like the Bathory riff better, even though this is still very good. I think the Bathory riff just flows better....
Given everything, including the fact this was 1981-1982, nothing comes close to the ferocity of this song nor the album. Everyone should be forced to listen to this song. Label it whatever you want but, it's really just incredible rock & roll. If you don't agree, put a clear plastic bag over your head and run as fast as you can until you die just so we can look at your face and laugh with joy.
@TheLordFenris in my opinion james hetfield is still pretty bad ass. on one video from 2008 or 2009, i saw him wearing venom shirt. and he's awsome guitarist
As did they with a lot of other heavy metal acts that have thrash elements, Tank, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Black Sabbath, and maybe Sound Barrier(hahaha)
@JimmyBlackmoreBeck R U KIDDING ME!? They're black metal up the ass! There not even thrash. Real thrash bands are Gama Bomb, Bonded By Blood, Evile, Municipal Waste, and Warbringer. Venom is as black metal as they come.
@Marine184 Wow, you are so out of tune that i had to comment. Venom is speed/thrash metal....it is NOT, and never will be BLACK metal, it created the genre, and black metal at its start was not the stupid shit we hear about today, but simply a darker version of thrash/speed metal. Venom itself was never really black metal, it can be defined as heavy/speed/thrash...or by a few fans...as rock'n'roll:)
THose bands you listed are not REAL thrash, they are NWOTM, and they mostly suck.
@JimmyBlackmoreBeck lol i couldnt imagine that Dave Mustaine got inspiration from Venom because Dave Mustaine is a Satan hater. But Dave Mustaine did said it himself that he used to be associated with the dark side when he was younger.
@NytroMetal Oh he seriously only started being a christian a few years ago? When i saw an interview of Dave Mustaine talking about why he won't share a stage with satanic bands i thought he was a life long christian.
At 2005 Dave refused to be in a Greek concert if some black metal bands were on the bill and it was just because they're satanic. 2005 was not a few years ago.
@NytroMetal Actually Venom does promote satanism. They promote satanism not because they are real satanists, but because more kids and teens are converting to satanism because of them. The Norwegian Black Metal scene and the church burnings are a good example. I support the church burnings 100% because christianity is the biggest bullshit in the world and it angers me that it's the biggest religion in the whole world.
@SilentAssassin187 agreed man fucking christians at my school are always giving me dirty looks and shit just cuz i wear slayer shirts and venom patches. fuck those guys
@gabej14 Wow...really. They must be pretty pathetically judgmental then. Oh well, at least you're the one with a good music taste while they are missing out...they probably like lady gaga and jonas brothers and all that force-fed overexposed shit. xD
