If, as reported, the interruptions were coming from a well-wishing, retarded adult in the audience, I can certainly understand Obama being caught off-guard (momentarily) as to how to respond. Were I in the same situation, I wouldn't want to be hurtful to the well-wisher, either by ignoring him or by saying the wrong thing.
This was no "gaffe." Anyone who was there could tell you that he was contending with excited interruptions from the audience. It's not Obama's fault that his microphone didn't pick up those.
