  • voice recognition my ass, lmao all you are doing is pressing the button on the controller to switch your music, this set up is ghetto to say the least but creative, i hope you have upgraded to a TS and a mini itx system by now

  • HAHAA

Nice, a very cheap car-pc xD

  • Very cheap looking and horrible sound quality and did I mention is look horrible. Touch screen is the way to go. Not a bad idea on voice control but need to do a better job hiding everything and using quality parts like a real cd player and real speakers and so on.... Oh and u sound just like McLovin from super bad hahahhahahahahaha.

  • i have a mac mini hiding under my back seats

  • NEAT!

  • i find that even with a good mike and good software that voice recognition is still not very reliable, as just a little background noise or a slightly obscured command can make controlling your system difficult

for a car pc, just stick to the tried and true touch screen

  • not bad

  • What operating system does the laptop run on? is it Windows XP?

  • It's running XP, but to strip it down a bit I disabled a ton of unnecessary services and also changed the shell to be the program itself. In this way, explorer isn't launched and if the program does crash, the system will automatically restart it.

  • @technophilicnet what the name of softare ware u used to voice control?

  • @technophilicnet what the name of softare ware u used to voice control?

  • what are you talking about talk to the controller ... its not wireless .. you hold the button which enables voice commands then a media player plays that song

  • you asshole....don't you know human can do anything

  • this is a great project, iv bult mine with same idea as yours using an old laptop under the passengers seat and using a psx controler, im also using a 7inch touch screen, but i wish i thought of using voice control as well, but your are one smart f***er lol,

  • Im not a hater but just to clarify it wouldnt be that hard to install a mic and game controller.. It is a very cool setup but 6,000 songs man come on stealing of limewire is theft ya know .. judging by your car you didnt pay for them... Other than that great video dude very good idea.

  • ahahaahhahahahahaha stupid project :D the gamepad of the Psx and the notebook

In Italian : questo è un progetto cosi tanto brutto e senza senso, hai infangato l'idea del carputer in auto :D

  • Stupid project?, who is stupid here is you!, you are not even able to write in English you dumb fool. At least this guy is able to make his own carputer and write code, something you are not able to!

Prossima volta scrivi in Inglese stronzetto che non sei altro, ritorna a scuola.

  • hi there have a look at mine and see what you think! cheers vanders1200

  • oh i forgot to say , have u ever thought about one of those micro pc's i think one brand is called the tic tac pc its basicly a tiny pc that can run usb and some basic stuff and winamp type applications "although u could run your own. i think they are priced around $90 , worth looking at

  • chili willy woooo

  • sei uno zozzone!

  • could you use the cigarette power with a PC tower system or do you need a laptop

  • cool setup. a bit ghetto. nice work haha.

  • hey i couldnt find your site online and i had a few questions. i just installed my own car pc running off windows xp home. i was wondering what program u used for the voice recognition. also once i get the voice commands worked out how do u set up the computer to mute the music when u push the button on your controller?

  • GREAT WORK!!!!

  • How does the recognition system respond in a noisy car environment?

    Thanks

  • It's...alright. A directional microphone would be much better then the PC mic I am using. It's actually been nearly a year since I've worked on this system as I've been so busy with school and work. Hopefully I'll have an updated version with a custom dash control sometime soon!

  • wow this is sweet. it does look a bit cheap though but if you spend 1 weekend on it and buy a nicer deck it would be an a+

  • failed when you decided to leave a cassette player in the car

  • How about this rrohan2288, you by me a CD player with auxiliary inputs and we'll call it a deal. Oh, I could use some new speakers for the back too...those are blown out :)

  • just saying you got a really cool system but what kills it it the cassette player. plus afaik playing from cassette is pretty poor quality too

  • @rrrohan2288 lmao!!! agreed!

  • amazing, really good idea, could you please PM me the details of different software used, inc voice software etc, i'd love to get this in my car.

    Cheers mate

  • How do you turn the PC on? Does it turn on automatically when it gets power? Do you hibernate it? Does your cig lighter provide power when the engine is off?

  • Right now I have to turn it on manually with a switch under the seat. It doesn't power off properly; power is killed to it when the car is turned off. I made some optimizations to ensure the hard drive isn't written to a lot and so far it's been alright with the unsafe power-offs. Now that I'm out of school for the summer I may wire up a relay to the car so it will turn on automatically. I also want to put a good battery in it so it will power down safely when the car turns off after 5 minutes.

  • i have the cd player that comes with that car, if u want it [out of my 1995]

very cool to see alty's still on teh road, and a stick shift no less [what a great easy to drive car those are wit hthe stick]

  • and at $800, a steal!

  • really? how ??

    :_<

  • Well it has over 200k miles, I think the person I bought it from was asking 1100 originally

  • Genius idea. You need to work on releasing a commerical adaption of the software, would be EXTREMLY useful

  • Cool! Haha. I heard you say the song. And I reacently got a whole lot of music off my friend and she's really into incubus so I figured she'd have it and sure enough when I did a search for it in itunes it was there. It was trippy with them both playing at the same time. Just thought I'd tell you. Lol

  • Also, have you ever thought of rigging up some buttons into your steering wheel? Like, solering a button to the controller's PCB? That would be pretty neat.

  • Yeah, definitely. I eventually want to deconstruct the controller and make a panel with buttons to control everything underneath the existing radio. Rewiring some buttons to the steering wheel would be nice as long as I could do it cleanly. It would involve taking apart the steering wheel a bit in order to hide the wires, I'll have to do some research to see how easy that is. I'm sure some car pc enthusiasts have already done it.

  • not good

  • Indeed, VERY cool idea - but "cosmetic" wise is horrible job.

  • Yeah more to come on that, especially the controller sitting in the cup holders. Right now I'm focusing my energy on improving the software before I put any effort into presentation.

  • Oh cool ;) Maybe would be easier to use OCR VOIE type, then SDK. Well I guess you are good programmer.

  • SD-Omega has 20 models of car pc, which can support vista. I think SD-Omega can help you to upgrade your project.

  • Thanks,

I checked it out. They have some nice stuff. I'm assuming you are from SD-Omega, what's the pricing like? I don't see any on the site...

  • It looks like a great program. Can give a link to download and call it a beta or put a trial period on it so we can test this program?

  • I don't rely have things prepared for an easy to install exe right now, if you can wait till the spring when I have more time (I'm a poor full-time student) then I can probably hook you up.

  • thanks i'll wait 2 spring

  • How do you power the laptop? inverter?

  • It's not technically an inverter (inverters produce AC power from a DC source) but it is a car adapter I bought on ebay. It was less than $15 with shipping, if I recall correctly. It's really small and takes up nearly no additional room. Right now when the car is shut off power is just killed to the laptop since the battery is bad. Once I get a good battery, I'm going to set it to power down safely moments after the car shuts off.

  • what a waste of a laptop.

  • It was a 400mhz laptop with 64 mbs of ram and a couple of broken keys, have a better use?

  • I personally think its a genius idea. We all know the laptop would have been thrown away or put on storage and forgot about anyway...

Hell, I might do a similar thing with my broken laptop, and its much newer (amd turion64 2ghz, 1gb ram). I ruined its screen by spilling some liquid on the screen, and now you can see the liquid under the screen. Also, the keyboard doesn't work right.

With my CarPC I plan on installing a touchscreen and the Roadrunner software or something.

  • Awesome. I've looked into the roadrunner software when I was researching ideas, it looks very nice.

  • Wow, that's really nice.

    Good job. :)

  • i would love to get that software on my carpc, shoot me a PM and we can work something out :-)

  • awesome work , very clean instalation.

    congratulations

  • Freaking awesome... I have a more full-blown system, but for the money, simply awesome

  • Thanks surfgurujeff. Yeah, low cost was definitely the goal, voice seems to be significantly cheaper than a touch screen for example. I have found usb GPS receivers for around $30 so I may look into navigation next. Although admittedly, I would likely need a touch screen for navigation to be feasible. So I guess now I'm looking for cheap touchscreen solutions.

  • dude this is so sick.

  • Haha, thanks pugs. Can I put you down for 4?

  • yes lol
